Pulled out an old jar (like 18 years old) of Ranger super fine gold embossing powder and it left a horrible mess on my cardstock. This prompted me to test all my powders since most are just as old as this one. None of the others seemed to be a problem. Can embossing powder go bad or settle in the jar over time? What are your most used colors and what brands do you prefer?

I don't think embossing powder goes bad. Are you using a powder tool or bag? I have about 8-10 random colors I bought at a SB Yard Sale and they work fine. I have no idea how old they are.
I have all different brands.
For GOLD my favorite is Stampin' Up! Old Glory. It's an OLD product but it's the best gold ever! When I use the last I will be sad. For WHITE I use Hero Arts. For CLEAR I use Simon. For BLACK I think I'm using HA. But it could be SU! For SILVER, I'm using All Night Media (I have no idea where I got this), but I have a Ranger brand waiting ready to be opened.

Judikins iridescent sparkle is my absolute favorite.

I used the bag generously before stamping but the gold powder clung to the paper like perfect pearls would and I could not remove it..it looks like a big halo around the embossed image..

I have had embossing powder go bad - especially the metallics. And it was good brands like Judikins and Ranger. I bought a new jar of Ranger gold this fall and it melts so smooth. Definitely spring for a new jar.
Detail clear and detail white embossing powder from Papertrey Ink are the two I use the most. I think it's the Stuart brand.

I just bought a couple from a company called Emerald Creek Craft Supplies. They are beautiful blends. I got one called northern lights that is a mix of blues and greens. The other is camo chic.

I have several colours in Filigree Detail Embossing powder I've been very happy with. Also Zing white. I do have some others but can't remember the manufacturers (I'm at work at the moment).
