My 4.5 year old is starting to show interest in chapter books. Have read most of Charlotte's Web. We are currently reading a Hank the Cowdog book.
Any other suggestions? I want to add some books to his wish list for Christmas (for family members). I think I will order The Mouse and the Motorcycle to read next.
Thanks!

I would just take him to the library and let him browse the chapter book section. is he too sophisticated for "Frog and Toad"? that was one of our daughters fav's.

The other E.B. White books are great too - The Trumpet of the Swan & Stuart Little. DS also really enjoyed the Little House series.
Farley Mowat wrote a couple children's books that we enjoyed as well (especially Owls in the Family).

I am going to be watching this thread. My 5yo (grandson, but I'm raising him at the moment) is starting to read, but not very interested in books. He'll put up with me reading to him so I hope to find some more interesting (to him) books. He starts kindergarten this coming week!

My DD loved Bunnicula. Now 19 and in college, she told me she was going to buy a copy for her boyfriend so he would get her jokes about vegetarian vampires. LOl
My son loved the Roald Dahl books. DH read the whole Charlie series to him, then read them to him and DD when she was little, at DS's request.
Our local libraries had the coolest things to help kids love reading. They had these kits called "story time a-go-gos" that included a book, a tape or cd of the book, plus things to make the book come alive. These things might include hand puppets, stamps, dolls or action figures, crafts, etc. Some of the kits for older kids would include the DK books that related to the topic of the book, like a book about bats to go along with Stellaluna.
There also a great many book kits that included a book and a cd or tape of the book, so the child could listen to the book while following along with the story. My mom gave me such grief when I bought my 3 yo DD a portable CD player of her very own, but she apologized after she saw how much Dd enjoyed it and learned from it. You could also get kits that included 2 copies of a book so you could read aloud and your child could follow along. I liked both of these ideas because they helped kids associate the words with the correct pronunciation of the words.

The Marvin Redpost series is another that is popular with little boys. He's kind of the male equivalent of Junie B.

I started reading the Harry Potter books to my son at around that age (my older son was six or so.) The younger one would sit on the floor and listen while playing with his Legos or his cars and I would read a chapter a night. We read pretty much anything or everything.

I read most of the Ramona books aloud when I taught 1st grade. There's another cute series, about a girl named Clementine, but I'm not sure if she is more interesting to girls.

Forgive me, but I loathe Junie B. Jones. So yappy and with such a sour little attitude. That's the one series that has gotten a big thumbs down from me. I don't really like Ivy + Bean either. But Junie is such a little shit that I can hardly stand to read her character. I keep wanting to say "And that's not a particularly smart thing to say to your teacher either, you know." I liked Ramona Quimby way better.
So far our favorites have been Magic Tree House, Never Girls, Misty of Chincoteague and the rest of that series, Little House and the rest of that series, Narnia series, Wrinkle in Time and the rest of that series, Roald Dahl, and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Junie B Jones are really funny! Especially the audio. Maybe because I had my own kid with no impulse control. I wanted him to do better, but I also wanted to let him know that he wasn't alone.
We read a lot of our favorites from when we were growing up. I'd forgotten about Bunnicula. That's a great series. Charlotte's Web was the first chapter book we read to the kids, too.
Farmer Boy Narnia series Beverly Cleary was a good author. Frindle Pippi Longstocking Mrs Piggle Wiggle series The Boxcar Children! Caddie Woodlawn Mr Popper's Penguins The Borowers
Good Reads has a couple of great lists.

That's about the age that both I and my children started on Enid Blyton books, in particular The Enchanted Woods, The Folk of the Faraway Tree and The Magic Faraway Tree, then the 2 Wishing Chair books after that.
I have read those darn books so many times to both of my kids, just like my daddy read them to me, I think I could almost recite them word for word! They are the best.

I have a 10 year old that has loved to read chapter books since he started reading at age 6. He has gone through so many books, we are constantly looking for new series. These are some of the ones he enjoyed when he was younger
Bad Kitty books - those are laugh out loud funny. My DH loved reading these with him How to train your Dragon books - there is way more to these than in the movies - though we really liked the movies too. Lots of illustrations and funny moments. Captain Awesome Frankie Pickle Big Nate Greetings from Somewhere - these are like Magic Treehouse but a little easier to read Heroes in Training - young Olympians. Kind of like Percy Jackson type of books but for younger kids. These are funny. Bailey School Kids Cam Jansen Mysteries

Captain Underpants were also great one to get kids reading. My son loved them! The Warrior series by Erin Hunter and the Galahad series by Dom Testa. He's one of the hosts of a popular morning radio show here and does a ton of work locally encouraging reading and writing with kids in CO.

One of the first chapter books I've read to each of my kids is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. I adore that book.
