I have been using Clinique eyeliner for years and really liked it. I noticed that the eyeliners I bought most recently (almost 2 yrs. ago!) haven't been giving me the look I want. They seem to give a sharp line and I don't think that looks too good on me. I use the smudger tip at the one end, but it does nothing to smudge. As I get older, I have a lot more trouble applying make up, so I hardly ever put on make up anymore. And I look so much better with make up!
I have tried doing eyeliner with eye shadow, but it looks awful (because I can't do it well!).
If anyone else has similar problems, have you found an eyeliner that you would recommend?

I quit using liner and just tightline now. The mascara I use tightlines at the same time as putting on lashes, so it's a lot easier than doing it separately.
I use the L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Effect, but the wand takes a bit getting used to. IT Cosmetics makes one that's a lot easier to use.

I've always struggled with eye make-up due to sensitivity & coloring (I'm pale with cool undertones, so most products read too dark/stark/bright). I like the softer look of dark brown or charcoal eyeshadow as liner, but it doesn't last long especially during allergy season. On the recommendation of a stranger in the Target aisle last year, after sampling & tossing many different brands at various price points, I use & highly recommend e.l.f. Cream Eyeliner in Coffee ($3); surprisingly, it applies smoothly & is the only liner I've ever used that lasts all day even during allergy season. In accordance with the veteran MAC makeup artist's advice, I only line from the center to outer corner of the lid & create a subtle cat eye; she discourages lining below the eye. HTH

I use either Urban Decay 24/7 in Demolition or Clinique's Quickliner in the Intense Midnight. Clinique must have changed their formula of the regular quickliner because mine kept breaking. I don't have that problem with the intense.

Another Urban Decay 24/7 Demolition user -- it goes on easily, easy to smudge, and is not too stark.

I like this one by Givenchy. It smudges well if you do it right after application - but then it sets and doesn't budge, which I like. To soften the line, I use a brush like this (I think mine is MAC, though).

I got the impression from the artist that it's not a hard & fast rule, but depends on several factors (eg eye shape, eyelids, lash volume, undereye puffiness/discoloration, preference). With thick lashes & wearing mascara, lining the lower lashes looks heavy on me (plus, it highlights that my eyes are not symmetrical). I can understand the reverse would also happen - lining below the eye with light or sparse lower lashes would provide definition.

It's just a technique to fill in the spaces at the roots of your lashes. You can do it with a tightliner product and a special brush (I have Laura Mercier), but it takes a lot of practice. I find doing with mascara is a lot easier.

I can totally relate. I got away from using any specific eyeliner for that purpose. Instead I use a super dark (brownish black) powder eyeshadow and use a liner brush. I can control how dark or light I want it and then I go back and lightly smudge to take the harsh line away if it is too "precise" I like a more smudged blended look. I have a small, angled liner brush that I use and it works great. Right now I'm using this eyeshadow kit and the darkest color is my eyeliner color. IT Cosmetics eyeshadow paletteThis isnt the specific brush I have - but very similar Angled liner brush

Love the NYX fat marker liner. Looks likes a felt pen and comes in a skinny version too. Stays on well and have been using it since November and still strong. Plus it's cruelty free!

I use and swear by Stila Smudgesticks on the top lid, softened by a bit of eyeshadow brushed on if necessary, and eyeshadow only on the lower lid. Use a small brush and practice and you'll get the hang of it. I have a double-ended brush that's angled on one end for the top, and rounded for under the eye. The older I get, the less shadow I use on the bottom. I can't tightline, it bothers my contacts too much. I just get as close on the uppers as I can.

I don't have that problem with the intense. I have Intense Midnight too! Mine must be a few years old, maybe that's why I am having problems. I will try the Urban Decay, a few of you like it. I also had the problem with some of them breaking.

I see people in ads that don't have eyeliner on the bottom and they look so good. I sure don't. I also don't have nice lashes either, that's probably why I have to have liner on the bottom.

I'm another that uses a good angled brush and a brown eyeshadow as liner ... my current favs are from Urban Decay and Bobbi Brown but really choose whatever shade or brand works for you ... I think getting a quality brush is the most important thing

Urban Decay 24/7. They are a softer pencil that is easier to soften with a smudger. And they have tons of colours so you are sure to find a colour that works for you.

I used to love Bobbi Brown's gel eyeliner. It still works well, but the formula changed a couple of years ago and the pots dry out really quickly. I've been using MAC's gel eyeliner for the past year and I like it as well as I liked the Bobbi Brown.

kimpossible that's exactly what I do, same palette and an IT angled brush. And when I wet the brush I can draw a thin line with the shadow, if needed.
