I have a Pottery Barn Stratton king sized storage bed, leather headboard, and a Westin heavenly bed mattress that I need to put on Craigslist. They are about 8 years old, and has been moved a couple of times so it has a few very small dents and scratches on it. They have been touched up with a furniture marker so they look better, but they still exist.
The image below shows what these items would be new ($4600), however they no longer offer the headboard in leather. It was another $300.
I live in a large metro area, so there should be a decent amount of interest. That said, I live alone and really don't want a lot of people traipsing in and out of my place. So, it should be priced to sell.
What would you consider to be a fair price range? Both as a buyer and as a seller. I haven't bought or sold anything on Craigslist in years. Thanks a bunch!

I would not buy a used mattress, but maybe start at $300.

I would not buy a used mattress, but maybe start at $300. So you would separate the mattress from the bed?

I would not expect to get more than $500-800.

And I would sell the mattress separate - you will widen your range of people looking.

I would leave the mattress on the sidewalk.

Ok, I was afraid of that with the mattress. I live in a condo, so I'd need to have someone haul it away. I'll try offering it for free, and just sell the bed itself. Thanks! So far, the range is $300-$800 for the bed and headboard. Sound about right to you all? Originally it was about 2k not including the mattress.

We sold my son's bed and mattress together, so you never know. With it being a heavenly bed (those mattresses are awesome!), you might be able to sell it. I'd offer one price for just the bed and one for the two together. You can always start higher and then lower it if you don't get any offers, or give people a chance to make their best offer.

Offer the mattress for free. Someone will take it.

I would list it with the mattress, but include a price with and without the mattress. I've never sold or bought a mattress from Craigslist, but in my area there is a lot of them listed for sale and sold, so at least around here people do.
I would also search bedroom sets and mattresses just to see what the prices going in your area are. When we sold a living room set, I looked at the price of comparable pieces, price mine just a little bit less, and it's sold in a day. You might be able to get more for it you have a better market, it just depends on what things are going for in your area. Good luck!

I tried doing some pricing research on Craigslist, but it's a little more difficult since this is a storage bed, and a name brand. I think I will offer the bed with the mattress for an additional $50-$100. If it doesn't go with it, I'll then see if anyone wants it for free.

I sold a mattress on a local swap group in hours. I made $125 if I remember correctly. Sell the mattress - heavenly bed will probably get interest. It might be gross to the germaphobe peas but the truth is, there's a lot of people out there that would kill for a good mattress.

I personally had better luck selling things on my local neighborhood facebook group. You could try both.

I would absolutely list the mattress too. And I am a bit of a germaphobe myself. If I was in need of a mattress and saw a good one for sale that had no obvious stains or ick-inducing, noticeable things wrong with it, I would buy it. All you have to do is encase the entire mattress piece in a zippered mattress bag. Once it is in the bag and a nice, full mattress pad is on it, its as good as new in my opinion.
I have a friend who wouldn't dream of having a mattress in her home unless it was in encased a special mattress bag. And that includes a brand new one. She said it helps with allergies and bugs, and also protects the mattress from spills.
I have seen a number of mattresses in my area advertised as "only used as a guest bed" and that seems to really generate a lot of interest because for most people, a guest bed is only used 3 or 4 times a year.
I would list them on the same ad, $x for the bed itself, $x for the mattress, but $x if sold together, and make the combined price lower than they are separately. The person buying your bed is going to be aware of the quality and most likely be happy to get the mattress for a few bucks more.

List the mattress too - the pottery barn label will get you more money - I would list it at at least $1200

If the headboard and storage unit are in good condition, I'd ask $600-$800. If there isn't any interest, then I'd lower the price after a few days. Regarding the mattress, if it was a rarely used mattress, protected with mattress cover, etc., be sure to include that information in the ad. But, if it's one you used daily, 8 years is pretty old in my book and I'd offer it as a bonus with purchase.

i would try the bed for about half of original cost. you can always lower it or take less.
i would also list the mattress unless it is really in the way. you could offer to include a new in package mattress cover to overcome the icky used mattress thing. might be worth it if you can sell it for more. people who buy used mattresses usually NEED to buy a used mattress.
if you are in a local (neighborhood) FB sell group, i think people in those groups might be less grossed out by the used mattress. it is coming from one of our nice neighbors, not some icky person from icky neighborhood. also, that cuts down some on the level of weirdos you might attract from craigslist.
do you have a garage? put the bed and mattress in the garage when you are ready to sell it (no weirdos allowed in the house).

I have seen a number of mattresses in my area advertised as "only used as a guest bed" and that seems to really generate a lot of interest because for most people, a guest bed is only used 3 or 4 times a year. Is that just a marketing ploy? Why would you change out the mattress in your guest room that is barely used? I would start off listing the bed at $1200. Curious why you're selling it? Seems like you spent a lot of money on it, I would want it to last longer. Be sure to have a friend at your apt when the buyer comes to take it. I watch too many dateline episodes and once a lady was selling her house and let a "buyer" in to see it, but he was just trolling the neighborhood looking for his next rape victim and murdered her. I can't remember how they found him because there was no link between them. This happened to another realtor too and the buyer had used a fake email account to communicate with her.

This isn't to replace the guest bed, this is when people are downsizing and no longer going to have a guest room, or maybe want to have a craft room and decide to get rid of the guest room furniture all together. Having a guest room seems to be a luxury that less and less people have. Maybe they don't want overnight company or maybe their family all lives near them, but I can't think of anyone other than my older sister that maintains a guest room as only a guest room, strictly for company. Buying a home and allowing a bedroom for each family member and a planned spare bedroom really does inflate the cost of a home, and if it is only going to be used once in a while, I think it is less and less desirable to people anymore. Perhaps try posting to your Facebook friends first. If you do have a stranger come and look at it then consider have someone at your home with you when you show it.

Off track a bit but " Some people aren't skeeved out by that sort of thing."
I find it odd that some people do get skewed out by this. When you sleep in a hotel, a different person is using the same mattress each night. What is the difference?

Thanks so much for all the input. annabella, My ex and I purchased it, and for one 5' 3" tall person it's huge, and high off the floor. I took very little when we split, the bedroom furniture was part of it. Four years later, it's time for a change. Within the next few months I'll change out all the bedroom furniture, as I find what I like.

I would ask like $6-700. Don't include the mattress. People are going to offer less. Sometimes they even wait until they come to pick it up but 80% of craigslist people do that. I have done a lot of craigslist. Furniture goes pretty quickly if it's nice. Make sure to include Pottery Barn in your title. There are people that would buy the mattress. We had a young couple take one - granted we gave it to them- but it was coffee stained. yuck. Good luck

When you sleep in a hotel, a different person is using the same mattress each night. What is the difference? You are completely right, but I still wouldn't buy a mattress off CL. I'm so grossed out by the thought. I wouldn't buy anything upholstered that wasn't new, not a couch, chair, nothing. I think of germs and bed bugs. Yet I have no problem staying in a motel! I admit I don't really like sitting on the couch in a motel, and I don't want to sit directly on the bed spread unless it's pure white and I can see it's not stained. Forget walking on the floor in bare feet. And I have to inspect the edges of the mattress for any signs of bed bugs. In general I'm not a germaphobe, though.

Are you active on Facebook? If so, I would post pics & share on my personal page first. I've sold everything from patio furniture, to clothes, toys & our home (sold it in a week)plus sold a friend's home to another friend just by sharing pics & info.

I wouldn't personally buy a used mattress from anybody, but that's because I have back problems and I'm really picky about what I sleep on.
We bought a queen sized bedroom furniture set (no mattress, we got a new Sleep Number mattress for it) for our guest room from someone on Craigslist. The solid wood queen sized bed frame and headboard with wrought iron accents, tall dresser and two large nightstands was about $1100.
Later on we bought a king sized solid wood bed frame and headboard for our lake cabin from someone else on there for $900. All of it was like new and being sold by people who had recently gotten divorced and were moving.

The rule of thumb for Craigslist seems to be 10-25% of the original cost for things in good shape. With your bed being a name brand but you want to sell quickly I'd start in the 15%-20% range.
Definitely put a price on the mattress. Those do sell well in the secondary market. Remember the Peas skew to the higher end incomes. Lower income people aren't as picky about second hand things. They buy second hand mattresses because sometimes that's the only way to get a decent brand. Or even a "new" mattress at all. (Speaking as someone who spent many years at the lower ends with a lot of friends in the same boat financially.)
