If so, how long ago did you test and do you have any study materials that you recommend? Going to be working on mine in the next few months...

Are you doing the SPHR or he SHRM-CP?
I have a preference over the SHRM test, I believe the competencies they are testing on is more applicable to the role of HR.
From start to finish with studying and doing online research, practice tests I think it was close to 3 months. I passed on the first try, but I know a lot of HR folks that did not. It is not an easy test.
Good luck with your test!

kimpossible ,.. I haven't found out the difference yet. As I have just started looking. Are you recommending the SHRM CP one? I have about 19 years HR experience with seven of that being in comp and benefits ... I guess I need to go find out the differences I did get the CEBS certification back in 2005 Most of the job postings I'm seeing are requesting the SPHR

I would recommend the SHRM certification. The requirements for re-certification and the test itself lend to a more experienced HR's skill level.
I think a "non-hr" person would be highly challenged to pass it based on a percentage of the questions relating to more "on the job" experience with real life scenarios.
Of course, its just my opinion, but I think matched with your CEBS, you will be all set.

problem is I was originally grandfathered for life under CEBS for years not needing continuing education and then they reversed that decision and I didn't keep up with it unfortunately, so I can put I have it, but it isn't current.

I still think the SPHR carries more recognition and weight that the CP, but most employers are fine with either. I attended a prep class and it really helped focus on the test bias, which every test will have. If you tend to rely on your experience and knowledge, that can be a testing flaw in not being able to identify "SHRM-preferred" responses. The single biggest tool that I used was the online test bank. I went through that bank until I could answer every question without being stumped, and when I could not only correctly respond to the question, I could also identify all the other multiple choice responses and define them. Now, the bank may have been a part of the prep class, so not sure if that is available without paying a fee. By the time I sat for the test, I was done in half the time (including review and feeling absolutely comfortable with my responses) and passed easily. And it is a difficult test. My other advantage-I am a good test taker.

The PHR pass rate for the SHRM certification is significantly higher than the HRCI pass rate, and the SPHR pass rate is about the same for both credentialing places. That says that the SHRM PHR may in the long run have less credibility if those rates continue.

Are you seeing the SHRM-CP turning up in job postings yet? Everything I've seen still says PHR/SPHR. I'm curious to know when it will get some traction with employers around here. I've been PHR since 2003 and have been debating testing for SPHR or SHRM-SCP.

I haven't and I also advertise with the PHR/SPHR cert as I have no inclination to elaborate further and it represents what I need. I'm not going to discount the CP but don't feel like I need that much specificity in an ad.
