We are renting a vehicle for a weekend out of state trip.
Should we purchase the car rental insurance ($9 per day) even though I verified through our auto insurance agent that We are fully covered?
He stated that we were fully covered, but yet said they recommend purchasing the rental insurance!

They say that so if something happens, they aren't out the money. I never buy the insurance.
Have a fun and save trip!

Yes. If you get in an accident, unless there is some other reason to go back for a ticket or something, you report as usual, call the company, get a replacement car, and continue your trip. And not go back. Best peace of mind was the extra I spent on rental insurance for a car we drove through South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
Our insurance covered us, but I figured if we were hit by someone who had no insurance, like a bison, our trip continued seamlessly. We would have lost money on some strict reservations if we had to stick around someplace. No accidents, and it was nice to drop off a car in good shape, but the peace of mind was worth it.
And no claim on my insurance if something did happen. My agent actually suggested it. That's what she did.

I do. My insurance covers it, but there is a $500 deductible. One time when I rented a car I had reserved an economy, but got an SUV for the same price because they were out of economy cars. Not used to driving a car that big, I damaged the front quarter panel on one of those cement posts at the gas station. Best $45 I ever spent.

Make sure you know exactly what your insurance (or credit card, since some provide rental car insurance) will cover.
While it's true some will cover damages to a rental car, few, if any, cover everything the rental company will charge you.
For example, the rental company will charge you for the number of days the damaged car is out of circulation while it's undergoing repairs (not able to be rented, therefore not making the company money). Few outside policies cover that particular expense.

I got charged $175 for the rental company to process the claim. Which was not covered by my insurance.
The care had minor damage.
if you do get into an accident.. make sure the police are notified.
I was hit in a car park the other person left a note.. but I didn't call the police, but I should have.

Nope.
We are covered both by our regular car insurance and our credit card.

I always used to get the insurance because I didn't own a car (so didn't have any other auto insurance). My college a cappella group used to rent cars for out-of-town shows. We used the insurance twice in three years! (FWIW, no alcohol or other substances were involved in either accident, and I wasn't driving)

Yes. I swear if you buy it, they don't even look at the car when you return. If you don't, they go over it with an eagle eye. The one time my husband didn't buy the insurance Enterprise said he chipped the windshield. How do you prove you didn't? We had to pay $250 for replacement. He buys it every time now.

We always get the insurance for the peace of mind. We know that we can walk away no matter what might have happened to the car. We did this in Scotland, England, Ireland, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Nothing did happen, although we almost hit a moose 2 hours after renting a brand new SUV with 13 miles on the odometer. That was scary!

I absolutely hate renting cars. Before renting I always call my insurance agent and ask if I am fully covered with my policy. He says do not buy the insurance. But check with your own insurance agent for your policy limits.
Also, before leaving the rental car lot, take photos or video of the car at every angle (inside and out) and zoom in on any damage you see that is already on the car. The date and time stamp on our photos was the only thing that saved us from claim.

No I don't because my agent says it will void or trump the coverage I have through them. So I don't spend the extra money.

We don't buy it. Our auto coverage & credit card coverage has it covered. We would be responsible for the deductible if in an at fault accident - just like if I was driving my regular car. I prefer to save the money as we travel a bit & it adds up.

We got it, and it came in handy. Our car broke down on the way from LA to Vegas in the middle of nowhere in the desert. They came out, changed the tire while we waited in the car, and then we just swapped it out really quickly at MacCarran Airport. It was easy peasy and hubs didnt have to change a tire in the desert heat. He usually would, but the car didn't have a spare anyway. They insisted he didn't because it was a liability if something were to happen.

No. Our regular car insurance and credit card both cover rental cars.
I also frequently rent them for work and we are explicitly told not to get the insurance (it's against our T&E policy).

Yes. Because if anything happens with your rental, you can use the rental insurance to avoid having to file a claim with your own insurance company.

We also get it. It is cheaper than if we would have to pay our deductible. Plus we were told you may be responsible for paying a fee while the car is out of service . I need to double check on this the next time we rent .

Nope. We are covered both by our regular car insurance and our credit card. This is the case for us as well. Our AmEx covers us and our auto insurance also does. If that weren't the case, though, I would spend the extra money on insurance. I always buy the insurance for flights.

Why didn't your insurance company cover the glass? We have had two windshields get chipped on rentals and our insurance paid out both times. We didn't pay anything.

We never get it (unless it's mandatory like in Italy). We have a credit card that provides rental car coverage.
