We're discussing a bathroom remodel for our hall bath, the one the kids and any guests use. The tub/shower is harvest gold - oh, yes. Original to the house built in the 70's.
We're not sure if we're up to removing the gold tub and installing something new. Would it be easier and more cost effective to use Bath Fitters? Anyone have an experience to share?

My neighbor used them. I thought it was expensive for what she had done. If the tub is in good shape , I would keep it and change everything else. If not I would rip everything out.

Just as alternative-when I was redoing an old bathroom I had my tub reglazed. It was about $300 and looked like a brand new tub when it was done. Best darn $300 I have ever spent.

We had our mocha colored tub reglazed white. It really looks good. We also removed the solid surface panels on the walls of the shower and did white subway tiles with a row of gray & opaque white smaller tiles. The bath fitter option is plastic so we decided against it.

We looked into it. They sell it like it's top end quality and price it so. But I was not impressed. I'd avoid it.

I have heard of mold building up between the original tub and fitter. It's just not something I would risk. As others have suggested, look into re-glazing.

I have not heard favorable things about it, though I haven't used them myself.

The tub is fiberglass, so reglazing might not work.
However, I did find a product by Rustoleum that allows you to paint over fiberglass or tile or ceramic with an epoxy paint. It would be a fraction of the cost of Bath Fitters. Has anyone tried this?
Thank you for your comments, ladies. They were very helpful!

Question about re-glazing - I have an old green tub that is in perfect condition, I would love to have it re-glazed in white, my problem is the toilet is also the same matching green, can a toilet be re-glazed also?

fidget, we briefly looked into this about 15 years ago and was told it was cheaper to just replace the toilet. However, it was not in our case. The pipes come into our bathrooms in an unusual way and the toilets that we would need cost $500! Granted that was 15 years ago and we have not looked into it since. I have a turquoise toilet, a bright yellow toilet and a beigey-pink toilet. Each bathroom has floor and wall tile to match. One has a tub to match. Fortunately, they tiled the shower in the turquoise bathroom with white tiles.

This bathroom has been partly dismantled for the last 10 years, when dh began the renovation process. He started with this bathroom, our masterbath, because it was the smallest. Someday, I will hire someone to rip it out and start again. It's partly retiled with tumbled marble. The yellow sink and yellow 40's vanity is long gone with nothing replacing it. It's a hot mess. We use the hall bath. As we are empty nesters most of the time, it's not a big deal.
