The American Girl company just announced it was releasing its first boy doll, Logan Everett. "The Rev. Keith Ogden of Hill Street Baptist Church sent a message to more than 100 of his supporters and parishioners Wednesday titled, “KILLING THE MINDS OF MALE BABIES.”… “This is nothing more than a trick of the enemy to emasculate little boys and confuse their role to become men,” the minister said in the e-mailed statement he sent at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday after watching a segment about American Girl on “Good Morning America.”… “There are those in this world who want to alter God’s creation of the male and female,” he wrote. “The devil wants to kill, steal and destroy the minds of our children and grandchildren by perverting, distorting and twisting (the) truth of who God created them to be.”" www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2017/02/15/american-girl-introduces-boy-doll-local-minister-enraged/97945048/?from=global&sessionKey=&autologin=

I was looking forward to a nice, positive thread about AG's new boy doll, and now it's going to be about some wacky minister's outrage over little boys playing with dolls. (Sigh). I'd prefer the former.

I think it's great that AG is making a boy doll.
And who says it has to be specifically only for boys to play with? I know little girls like to play with baby boy dolls too.
My dd used to walk around with a Calliou doll that was about the size of a Cabbage Patch doll when she was little.
And let's face it - it is a brilliant business move. Now AG will have double the number of clothes to sell. A whole new line of boy clothes. I'm sure they'll have some kind of "boy" accessories. It's money-making genius.

Logan Everett is my son's name. Too old for dolls but we thought it was cool.

Does the reverend think this is the first boy doll?! Hello, Ken from Barbie and I think cabbage patch did as well - he needs to get a grip - other actual problems out there in the world and this is not one of them !
I think it's great and I agree girls like to have boy dolls too - it's not like children come in only one sex and playing mommy I'm sure they'd like to have daughters and son dollies! But yes also for boys to play as well.

My boys not only had their own baby dolls, but strollers and slings for them as well. I guess I know a church we won't be attending.

I think it's a step in the right direction for American Girl - although I would have liked to see more inclusion of boys in their announcements (the doll seems to be aimed as a companion to the girl dolls for girls not a step towards acknowledging that boys like to play with dolls too). They've sold a boy doll for years though in their Bitty Twins line.
The Reverend is off his rocker, bless his heart!
As for boys - I have three kids, 2 girls and a boy, and the one who showed the most interest in baby dolls and strollers and toy kitchens was my son. He's grown up to be an excellent cook and super with kids - he volunteered in my younger daughter's kindergarten and ran a Daisy troop (K-1st GS) for a couple of years.
AND I had an anatomically correct boy doll when I was a child - got him fro my 2nd birthday and still have him - my kids played with him too.

My DGD wanted a boy doll for some time. Walmart came out with a boy version before Christmas. We bought both versions of the doll (Caucasian and African American)for her. They sit on her trunk with her other AG dolls. I don't know why AG waited so long to do a male version of their dolls.

I'm so glad that the Marine Corps never found out that my cousin used to play with my dolls when he came over to our house when we were kids. Whew.

I think it's great and I agree girls like to have boy dolls too - it's not like children come in only one sex and playing mommy I'm sure they'd like to have daughters and son dollies! But yes also for boys to play as well. My Cabbage Patch was named Cory Fred. He sported a lovely pink corduroy outfit. My boy cousin helped me take care of him when he came over to play. The same boy cousin who now has a wife, two beautiful children, and a home where he cooks amazing meals and decorates all the kid's birthday cakes in amazing style. I am sure we can blame all of that on Cory Fred. My cousin's wife probably wishes she could go back in time and make sure he never played with my doll when we were little. I mean who would want a husband who cooks and takes equal part in raising the kids and changing diapers? The horror. My cousin is clearly a devil spawn. Damn you Cory Fred and your beguiling smile and corduroy outfit! You ruined my cousin, you acursed beast! (Obviously, that's is sarcasm. I love you Cory Fred! Thanks for all the good times!) Also, I remember a Joey Spivoc doll that was anatomically correct from the 70's. It isn't like boy dolls are new, but maybe the fact that AG is making one they will become mainstream?

That Reverend's statement is just crazy - The Ken Doll has been around since the 1960s - does he think that is the devil's work too??

Too late for my boys and dd who would have loved him! The boy/girl bitty twins we had were loved and played with by all 3 kids for years. I hope the boy sells well so AG will keep/expand the line. They seem to be struggling though so who knows. It's beyond sad to me that people exist who think like that "minister."

I had the boy Bitty Twins for my oldest son. The rest of the boys haven't been interested in dolls (they do love stuffies), so my guess is that we won't be adding this to our embarrassingly large AG collection.

I assumed AG would have a boy line already it's 2017. I've never been in a store, we don't have them here. Like mentione previous Barbie has Ken, Cabbage Patch Kids had boys. Marketing wise it makes sense a whole other line of accessories to sell. Like when Build a Bear came out with 4 legged animals vs the original 2 legged style, all new accessories you need now.

I think it's well past time that AG made a boy doll. Just because they are called American GIRL doesn't mean that they can't produce boy dolls. I agree that both boys and girls like to have boy dolls to play with. The world isn't made up of only girls, so a child's doll collection needn't be only comprised of girls either. All of that aside, my brother had a boy doll when he was little and my son had both a girl and boy doll. He loved them. ETA: My brother is pushing 40 and my DS (#1, referenced above) is a teenager. This is a very interesting discussion & I wish all of you would include your age when you post so I can compare my experiences. I'm nearly 60. I didn't grow up with a brother. So when my son was born, 33 years ago, and he had a boy cabbage patch doll & a boy firefighter doll. He never touched them however he had stuffed dogs & a duck that he lived when he was really young. He showed no interest in girl toys after his sister was born when he was 4.
All that said.... my son is the most amazing compassionate & attentive husband & father. He began swaddling his son the moment they let him. My son has a wonderful wife, but he does the lion's share of cooking because he loves it.
So, yay for AG bringing in a boy doll.. but I don't think it matters when raising a son who will be a good husband & father.
My 2 yo DGS has no interest in stuffed animals at all. But he has a new baby cousin & I keep them both a couple days a week. Maybe I need to get a "baby" of some kind for him to nurture when I feed the little on. Hadn't even thought of that.

my son attended speech classes at around 2ish years old. it was a group setting and the speech pathologist worked with the parents who in turn, applied strategies to encourage their children to speak. the class was all boys, 1 girl.
the speech pathologist was going over which were better toys to encourage speech - cars, trucks and tractors she felt weren't as effective as there was only so much they do. she encouraged simple board games, building toys and doll play (not specifically baby dolls) as it can be more interactive and you can ask more open-ended questions to encourage more than nodding or yes/no answers.
one of the fathers leapt to his feet and said "I don't care if my son ever says another word - he will NOT be playing with dolls" and stormed out. we were all flabbergasted and the poor mom was so embarrassed. AND their son started to cry. I have thought about that little guy, over the years.... they never came back to the group.

My daughter had the boy bitty twin. But my son was perfectly happy to play with a girl doll when he was little. I think he gave it up when he was 6 or 7 yrs old.

I saw this thread earlier and thought. should I link to the cray cray pastor in my town who thinks the dolls are the devil. Naw I thought we'll keep that indoors.
But NOOOO @zingermack had to share our mountain crazy!
(Don't read the comments in that article. I may have gone after a local former city councilmen who called the article "fake news" because he doesn't think it should have been reported)
UGH!
It's a damn doll! My favorite thing abut AG is the historical accuracy of the dolls and their stories.. can't really be accurate without some boys.

My German mother gave my sister and I "Sasha dolls" when we were little girls. They are dolls made by a Swiss artist and doll maker Sasha Morgenthaler and sold in the beginning of the late 1960's. You can still buy them on Ebay. Anyway, I got the boy doll named Gregor and my sister got the girl doll. He is the only play thing I have left from my child hood since we moved so many times while I was growing up. There are many boys and girl dolls in the collection. I've bought a few from Ebay since I think they are so unique and beautiful.

The preference for pretend play toys or games makes sense to me....typically I hear kids make car & truck noises when playing with them, as opposed to having conversations. Save

My boys are 18 and 21. I got divorced when the boys were really young. For a long time, it was just me and the boys in the house and I tend to be one of those free-rangey kind of moms who didn't really care what the boys played with as long as it didn't involve a screen. Because it was just me, there was no one else (while in our home) to even inadvertently pass on their prejudices about what was appropriate boy behavior. The end result is the dolls/stuffed lovies and play kitchen and painted toenails and all kinds of 'girl' toys were in our house. They lived right next to the nerf guns, the power rangers, the matchbox cars and a shit load of pokemon crap. I am reasonably sure the manly men who do manly things (lovingly and with great compassion) weren't in any way harmed by the pink paint on their little piggies or the makeup sessions ... nor was I when the little stuffed lovies were turned in grenades in war games.
