"A Virginia winery owned by President Trump’s son Eric has requested permission to bring in nearly two dozen foreign workers, according to a new report. The Trump Winery in Virginia is seeking 23 workers from overseas to plant and harvest grapes there this spring, BuzzFeed reported Thursday. The Department of Labor published a request from the winery, which is also known as Trump Vineyard Estates LLC, earlier that day. Thursday’s posting says potential workers will earn $11.27 hourly working at the 1,300-acre estate from April 3 to as late as Oct. 27. The workers are being sought using the federal H-2A visa program, which permits U.S. employers to hire foreign agricultural laborers for temporary work as long as no qualified Americans want the jobs instead." thehill.com/homenews/news/320043-trump-winery-seeks-more-foreign-help-reportDo as he says, not as he (or his daughter, or his son, etc.) does.

I support the H-2A visa program. I do think this particular visa request is interesting given Trump campaigned on bringing jobs back and many of his supporters complain about immigrants taking jobs from Americans (although seem to ignore the fact that Americans won't do these jobs).

I saw awhile ago and thought his winery is in rural VA, surely he can find local people willing to work for that salary.

$11.27/hr is good money in a rural area. I'm also surprised they can't get workers especially since rural Virginia is one of those areas that's supposed to be lacking in jobs.
usually farm work goes to immigrants because it's paid by piece/weight/row and it takes skilled laborers with experience to make good money doing it. It's been the migrant workers who have that experience. the migrant workers in our area make better than minimum wage but they only work for a couple of months at each location before they have to move on to the next place.

This plus: There are orchard owners who don't want to hire Americans, because Americans are savy to OSHA /labor regulations. Americans want protection from harassment, pesticides and environmental hazards. Americans know they can't be sent back to their home country because the boss doesn't like you. Americans don't involve (make) their whole family including school age children to help meet the quota. There were some nasty not in the news fights over apple pickers wearing a flimsy dust masks while working. The orchard owners won't let them wear masks because it sets the owner up for being sued over pesticide poisoning. Ell, some owners have to be forced into putting portapottys in. F'ing portapottys!

While it's cheaper than bigger areas, it's definitely not cheap and I wouldn't consider it rural. It's a college town. I'd guess that it's an issue of both - wages and type of work. I also support the H-2A program, but I think they are of course hypocritical assholes in this scenario. SaveSave

Regulations will be obliterated soon and then there will be one less excuse.
