My DS decided to to an extra year of high school this year ( here it's called a Victory Lap-it allows kids to get extra credits if needed and gives an extra year to decide your path) and he finally decided that he wanted to pursue music in University (a lofty goal as his only experience with music was in music programs at school- no outside lessons)
Last fall he attended a "saxophone day" at our local university (UWO) which is a day program run by the university, he met 2 of the main professors, and he mentioned he was applying in January. The one prof. said it would be advantageous for him to get a few private lessons to prepare for his auditions and she gave him her contact info. After his first private session with her, she encouraged him to keep coming back (meaning he had talent and it was worth pursuing)
Official dates for music auditions are in March, and his first one was booked at Ottawa University (6 hours away) and the one for here was 2 weeks after that. Last week, his university mentor asked him to come in early (this past Monday) to have a private audition, He was so excited and nervous, he had the audition , and yesterday he got official acceptance into The Don Wright Faculty of Music at UWO.....with 2 scholarships!
He he is so over the moon excited, and we are so very proud of the hard work and dedication he has given. I'm also thankful that our high school has such a dedicated music program and really brings out the best in their kids!
Sorry for the long story, but I needed to share all he details.

Congratulations to your DS, brilliant news for him. It's lovely when they achieve the path they are really after, especially when they work hard to get there.

Congratulations!!
Back in high school I had dreams of attending Laurier for music. I even tried to get my Grade 6 piano (while 15 and in grade 10). But I discovered that while I love to play (flute), I really hate to practice. And the idea of having to practice 2-3 hours a day was just not my idea of how I wanted to spend University life! LOL
Amazing for him!!!

Wow – – congratulations to your son! What a great achievement. My son, who is in grade 12, may also end up at UWO next year. And originally he had talked about studying music as well but now he's changed his mind and plans on studying economics. But, he still hopes to be involved in music at the University in some capacity--not sure how that will work out. He's been accepted to Western but isn't sure if he'll go there or not.

I love hearing these kinds of stories.
I've never heard of a victory lap. My son will likely need that. Here I've only heard of a gap year, in which we will have to help him figure out how to maximize that time, or the parents that held their kid back early on.
My son gets good grades, but socially were not seeing yet that we can send him off in 2 years. Yes, I know a lot can change, and we're hopeful.

First and foremost -- congratulations!! I know several music majors, and they seem to love their college experience.
I've never heard of doing this extra year of high school. How does it work in terms of class rank? Is this available in many schools?
