Sigh! This is just a woe is me post. I haven't scrapped in over a year. My scrapping supplies, that which I haven't purged, are stored away in one half of my closet. I used to subscribe to a lot of kit clubs and I MISS getting that box of goodies every month. But, like I said, I haven't scrapped in over a year. I can't justify a subscription. I need to stop looking at all the things everyone mentions on this board. Does anyone else have this problem? I thought of getting a planner subscription, but I don't plan the way those kits are made for. I will continue to ooh and aah over what you all get.

I was in the same boat as you for a while. Also, my budget didn't afford me to get a subscription, so I made my own kits from things I had. A good purge is a great place to start. I found things I forgot about and it got me scrapping again. When I was finally able to afford kits, I started a subscription but quickly cancelled. One reason why I had too much accumulating and I lost interest in scrapping again. The other reason why I quit is because I didn't like spending money on things I really didn't like. So now every other month or so I shop for myself. Then I make my own page kits with things I love. It may not work for you, but this is what gets my mojo going. The only hard part for me now is waiting for my order to come in

I don't currently subscribe to any kits and sometimes it's really hard to not jump back on the bandwagon. For me I don't scrapbook super often and I already have plenty of supplies not to mention over a years worth of Cocoa Daisy kits I haven't touched. I just keep telling myself that I don't need anything. I'm pretty proud of the money I am saving so far this year by curbing impulse shopping.

I feel exactly the same way, and really want to sub, but can't quite rationalize the purchase for myself, either.
I'm running into slightly different problems. 1) I need a Scrapclub for Men. All the lines and kits tend to be too girly overall. And yes...I can push myself to cross-over scrap, but pfft...if I'm buying a kit, I really don't want to push myself. I want to open the box go "oooooh!!!" and dash off all inspired. 2) I'm a cardstock scrapper, and I love the paper, but I have to be honest that I'll never use a whole kit of paper. 3) When you watch YouTube videos of DT people, they always have more than one kit, which makes me feel like I have to buy the kit and 3 add-ons so I get all the stuff they have to make their awesome pages.
Some of the kit clubs don't have minimum time requirements. So you could always sign up with one of those, and make an effort to use the box. Make a deal with yourself that if you go a month and don't touch it, cancel your sub. That gives you a little motivation without a big commitment. Freckled Fawn used to be exclusive kits, but they've opened up their kits to single purchases. Since I really just want embellishments, I've thought about giving myself a $20 budget there every month to make my own kit. I still get the happy mail and great supplies, but I don't get the girly crap I don't want. I haven't committed to that because the kits all have discounts, and you always feel a little better about your purchase when you get a "deal", you know? Even if that deal costs you more money in stuff you don't use! ><

One other thing that makes me hesitate getting a subscription is the stamp set that most kits include now. I don't really want the stamp set and I don't want to hassle with trying to sell it off.
I am going to check out Freckled Fawn. And maybe I'll give myself a quarterly budget and just buy stuff I really like and want from an on-line store. Thanks for the ideas ladies!!

Hey, katlady Hope you can get back into scrapping, soon. What about ordering a couple of kits from somewhere like Scrapbook Generation? I haven't purchased any, nor subscribed to this kit, but I did look on line today, and it looks like you can choose your theme, and that the kits are not so big as to be overwhelming (enough for 4 pages?). And each kit is fairly inexpensive, so not so much of a financial drain. Also they come with page plans, so maybe those would help with giving you ideas for how to use the supplies you already have in your stash. PrettyInPeank has done quite a bit of research on them.

I would totally do this. I'd love the excitement of getting a kit in the mail every month, but I know I would probably only use 1/2 of it, making it not worth the cost. I would much rather spend the same amount, picking out exactly what I want, and will use. A much better use of the same amount of money.

I actually purged a huge amount of stuff as i found myself totally overwhelmed by product when i restarted. I got back to basics--just cardstock and a 3 inch pile of PP and some alphas and brads. That was it. Then I subbed to a couple of kits (SG and Scrap Room) and USED THE KITS each month, pausing my subscription when i got behind. I just decided I didn't want to have a TON of stuff anymore--it overwhelmed me rather than inspired me, and so purging and 'starting fresh' just felt right to me. of course, talk to me in 6 months and we'll see if I am still doing 'minimalist scrapbooking' lolol.

Yes! I want to get down to "minimalist scrapbooking"! I want just one kit on my desk and maybe a few misc. stuff, and just work from that without being overwhelmed by stuff and choices. But that is a dream for me. LOL! Good luck on your journey!

I second the stash kit idea. I think it would be a good way to get your feet wet again and honestly...if you shop(ped) even a fraction of what I do/did, you have a lot of things that will feel new again when you find them in your stash anyway. If you want new things, then I think it might be a good idea to make yourself a deal. Make a stash kit, kill it to the best of your ability (or what is normal for you, anyway) and then when you make the next kit, build it with the idea of buying a few bits and pieces from new lines that you can incorporate. Then repeat the next month.

I second the stash kit idea. This is what I've started doing. I love the idea of kit clubs but I really prefer to choose my own supplies. I've been working with a kit that I created in Jan. I've added extra papers and embellishments to it since I started working with it but more than anything it has eliminated the overwhelming search for the perfect thing in my stash because when I don't have what I want in my kit I have a very clear idea of what I'm looking for when I turn to the rest of my supplies.

I am always threatening to get a kit club. Then I look at the kit clubs and I won't use the wood veneer, I won't use the chipboard. I am not into the style. I don't like the stamps. I want vintage. I am nitpicky, lol. I made my own kit. I wrote down everything I usually use in my books. I am doing more journaling than scrapbooking. I could really tailor my kit for those things. Instead of spending $30-$60 on kits I spend money on my kit. Currently, I use a lot of washi, rubber stamps, stickers & magazine images on my pages. That is what I buy every month. I even buy a nice luxury magazine to put in my kit too. I am much happier. I order all this in the mail so I get happy mail through the week or month.

I had been in a similar situation, but since I am paying for private university tuition, the budget made it impossible to sub to anything. At all. I organized the stash I had on hand and used the counterfeit kit challenge to assemble some copycat kits from the stuff I already owned. Saved a fortune, made 60 layouts (that I love) and cleaned up the scrap closet in the process.
I was really surprised by the counterfeit kit challenge: I really thought I couldn't make my old stuff seem new but it really truly works. Turns out, there's not a whole lot "truly new" in the scrapbooking world and re-purposing what I already had on hand worked wonders. My homemade kits resembled the sub kits pretty closely: it was a real eye-opener.
Now, I am more mindful of my random scrap spending habit and haven't (as yet) returned to the freespending weekly tours of my LSS. I haven't really missed out on much, although before I tried it I was certain I would be completely deprived of anything fun or interesting or inspiring. It was a good lesson to learn: I really did have everything I needed. Already on hand. Just waiting to be uncovered and re-discovered.
Good luck!

I really like the making a kit from your own stash idea. Especially, if you haven't scrapped in a while. Im sure you will find some great stuff.
I subscribed to Ali's Story and Stamp kit for over a year and cancelled recently. I really liked it, but it was getting to be too much stuff for me. Some kits were piling up and not getting used. I also hesitate to sub to most kits because I mostly scrap travel and boy stuff and the kits just don't work for me. Ordering supplies of my own choosing every few months makes me happy because I know I'm getting things I like and will use. I try to challenge myself by ordering something that is a little diferent from my normal scrapping style every now and then. It satisfies the urge for something new to me without ending up with a whole kit full of stuff I won't use.
Good luck with whatever you decide on and have fun.

PrettyInPeank you'll find the site at counterfeitkitchallenge.blogspot.com/ They present a new kit to counterfeit each month. There's a gallery so you can see what everyone has created from the challenge with what they have on hand. I hope you'll find lots of inspiration there. HTH!
