knowing he would be recorded? I haven't been here much for a couple of days so I apologize if this has been covered already, but why? I just don't understand it. It doesn't make sense. I've heard pundits say it was stupidity but I don't think stupidity takes someone as high up into government as he has been. I mean, I know he's known for being a bit of a conspiracy theory whack job, but that's not really an explanation either.
I'm trying to refrain from spinning my own whack job conspiracy theories but was this part of a larger plan? Anybody got any ideas or whack job conspiracy theories of your own.

the cynic in me tends to think along the lines of Scooter Libby (sp?). The whole premise being that you won't get caught and if you do get caught, we will make sure that you don't get in trouble and if you do get in trouble we will pardon you after you have served your country.

People need to disabuse themselves of the notion that just because a person obtained a high level government position that it means they aren't stupid or ignorant. Having worked in government, I can testify that this is often not the case and high-level government officials can be just as donkey-dumb as any average asshole in America.

My thought is The Donald told Flynn it would be fine. That as the the president Trump would make it all go away by simply telling the intelligence community to bury it. All of Trump's nonsense about the intelligence department not being trustworthy was his way of setting it all up. I think Flynn is just the tip of the iceberg. Trump sacrificed Flynn in order to hopefully stop a deeper look into the entire Russia connection. Trump is up to his ass in this and is trying to baffle everyone with bullshit to deflect the heat from himself.

I also don't believe for a minute that Trump doesn't have ties in Russia. Russia wouldn't interfere unless it's for good reason. Trump is just digging a bigger shit pile and hopefully, the people covering will get sick of taking the blame and eventually speak up.

Arrogance not ignorance is my guess.
And Trump threw Flynn under the bus in the hopes of tying the whole Russia issue off with him, and appease Pence who is either outraged at being in the dark or has to feign outrage now that the press exposed him being kept in the dark. Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy bumpy ride. Next move after the distracting presser and pr rally (and some golf)? A flurry of new executive orders and some wag the dog military action somewhere that no one can question because it's unpatriotic to the heroes.

I've said this before, but hubris. Everybody in this administration thinks they are above the law and honestly, if the leak hadn't happened, we would be none the wiser and it would be business as usual - so it kind of shows they are right.

Have to say I have mad respect for Adm Harward refusing to work in this "shit sandwhich" of a chaotic administration. I can only imagine how furious Trump is about being rejected. Of course I wonder how long Sec Mattis is going to stay on the job since he does not seem to be staying in line regards to Russia.

There has to be way more to the story but those who know something can't say anything until they have a means to irrefutably prove it so once he goes down he stays down.

I think they were caught through chance and maybe it wasn't Flynn's phone calls that were being monitored but the Russian's.
There's a possibility that monitoring the Russians inadvertently caught Flynn too. There's also no guarantee that it was the US intelligence that came across those phone calls either. Allied countries share their intelligence so the monitoring of the Russian's could have been done by any of the shared intelligence community for all we know, then passed on to which ever country it involved.
Intelligence units of allied countries don't work in isolation. They rely on each other to share information that they collect.

They should never forget that other countries' intelligence services are always monitoring as well. Trump may think he controls the whole world, but he doesn't.

Flynn SHOULD have known that all calls to certain people in other governments are recorded.
Perhaps he thought, since he was not yet in office, that his would not be recorded.
He SHOULD have known that any American calling xyz in the upper Russian government would be recorded. I am 100% sure that if I tried to call any high ranking person in Russia, Syria, Israel, etc. that call would be recorded, and I would immediately get checked out by our intelligence people.
If he did not know that, he should not have any high ranking job in our government.
According to Wikipedia, he was/is known for doing things his way--well, that didn't work out.

Pressuring him to resign because they have dirt on him is not blackmail. They are pressuring him to resign because he is vulnerable to blackmail. They are in national security. It is their job to do this.
