Yesterday, his high school chorus/musical theatre/drama teacher sent me a screen shot of an email he received from the college my DS will be attending.
Dear Teacher'sname,
Just wanted to drop a line to say hello. Plus, I wanted to brag on Jenny's DS and his audition 2 weeks ago. He came in and sang beautifully, but also sight-read very well. His musicianship is strong and that is directly related to you and your program. So I wanted to send a note of thanks for what you've taught him and to let you know that Jenny's DS represented you and your program at High School very well.
Would love to come and visit sometime.
Thanks,
Name Director of Choral Activities Associate Professor of Music Name of College
Now to be honest, high school chorus teacher was wonderful and taught DS much, but in all honesty, it was his middle school/freshman year in band, in addition to the natural gift of music. (he took the AP Music Theory Exam and got a 5...without even taking the course)
So the college was impressed...they've already awarded him $18,000 a year (plus he'll get some Zell Miller scholarship money) for academics. They told him at the audition that they had "more money" for him...but we've not yet heard how much.
I'm so happy for him and so proud of him.

I only wish scholarships were as generous in Canada!

When the chorus director sent this to me, I thanked him for encouraging my DS, ESPECIALLY in his Freshman year when he was still in band. DS wanted to do band, chorus AND drama and the chorus director allowed him into the Chamber choir, which did NOT meet during a class period (DS had no room in his schedule) in the second semester after all of the after school stuff for marching band was done. I told him that it was that FLEXIBILITY (that the band director did not have...and when band director did not support DS and pretty much forced him to make a decision) that made a huge difference to where DS is today.

She wants to do band, choir, theatre and dance.. oh and photography and yearbook.. I don't think she realizes she will have to take real classes too!! My nephew is studying composing, he is a sophomore, he is also studying physics! I think he will end up teaching at a college level... I will be interested to see what holds his interest. I love musical kids.. they are so interesting.
