Just wanted to come back and update that I finished Whole 30 last week! What an eye-opening experience. I ended up traveling for 15 of the 30 days BUT stayed complaint! I packed my Yeti and checked it as a suitcase so that I had no excuses. It was challenging but I did it!
A few of my favorite NSVs: - I lowered my resting heart rate by 10+ points! (Especially important with heart disease in my family) - Not only did I break up with Splenda and diet soda...I went ahead and broke up with caffeine too! Not that I never have it, but I don't 'need' it. No pre-workout, no iced tea every morning, no diet Mountain Dew at lunch. - my energy levels are even throughout the day - no more 3pm slump - I just feel better - eating food no longer makes my stomach hurt all.the.time. - clear mind - I didn't know I had a foggy brain ...until it was gone. - my clothes fit better - I even bought things in a size smaller (which is the size I was in a year ago, but they were really too tight in most cases now - Atlanta is pollen city right now - and it hasn't bothered me a bit - I always get a spring cold. - less back pain - this is HUGE. I was at the chiro 2-3/week b/c of degenerative disc disease, and had a lot of inflammation. I'm no longer in much pain, and haven't been to the doc since Whole 30. - brighter / whiter eyes - I also lost 9+ inches (incl 2.5 in my waist!) and 8.5 pounds!
I've relaxed a little since Wednesday - stayed about 90% compliant. (I've had a few French fries, popcorn and my big 'cheat' was a chocolate cookie dough Luna bar, lol) Otherwise, I didn't want to go off track too far. I'm going to do one more round starting tomorrow.

I did about 3 weeks not to lose weight, but as an elimination diet because of joint pain and stomach pain. I lost weight and didn't want to, and was so freaking hungry all the time. I started getting dizzy and shaky because my body was in ketosis and I really needed carbs.

*KAS* that's fantastic! Did you do the reintroduction? I am on day 32. I have to travel by car to SC on Tuesday and will be away 4 days for my kids' academic competitions. I'm afraid to start reintroducing foods until I get back in case I have a weird reaction. I think I lost approx 10 lbs. I have had no candy, chips, gum, soda or anything like those things. I have. I have no desire to pick them back up again. I really miss my hot chocolate and would like to have it every so often. I made the mistake of detoxing food, lexapro and caffeine (Pepsi) all at the same time. So I didn't have a great amount of energy. I think I found a caffeinated tea I can tolerate. I started out hating it, barely tolerating it with lemon or orange juice, and now I'm ok drinking it plain. I wasn't super duper strict, there were a couple of times I was out and had a salad with salad dressing. But I kept to the spirit of the whole30 and have learned overall to make better choices.

Yeah, maybe one day I will reconsider adding more carbohydrates, but I've read inflamatory conditions thrive on the starches, so I'm not sure what's better?

I love to hear about everyone's results and thoughts. I'm on day 24 of my 2nd Whole30 round. The last round was almost a year ago and it was time to do another to rein myself back in from the slipping back to bad habits. The first time I noticed more changes but this round has been good too and I'm learning more about what my stomach doesn't do well with. I can't wait to have a french fry and a piece of dark chocolate. And maybe some Mexican food!

Since posting on this thread quite some time ago, my husband and I completed Whole30. It made us both converts.
We feel so much better and have more energy. He also has less inflammation and joint pain. We both lost weight and especially notice flatter tummies with less of that bloated feel.
We finished March 30, but have basically stayed true to the gist of it as it's made such a difference. I'm pretty sure we will continue.

I did a Whole45 to start the year. I lost 10lbs. I'm close to my goal weight so it comes off slower.
I loved the diet. I still want to lose 6 pounds and it's so fricken' hard at this point. I did a big grocery shop today and off we go again.
I realized how bad the carbs are for me. Last week, I ate some pasta and the next day, my joints were achy. Grrr..

I looooooove whole30. It's so good for me. It's way more than weight loss, i needed to lose some but it really was amazing for my health more than anything else I've ever done. I kept eating that way when my 30 was up. I can do about 85% on plan and have room for a few treats. I am OK eating some treats, a little cake at a party is OK, rice doesn't affect me at all, but I will be sober all my life now that I know how alcohol affects me.
The best part is my sleep, it's so solid and restful, no afternoon slump and I also have no caffeine any longer either. I feel so healthy on this plan.

How successful do you think someone would be if she tried Whole30 and her spouse was not at all interested? I know it would make it much harder, but is it do-able if your spouse wasn't interested? We already eat fairly healthy so it wouldn't be trying to drag him away from fast food and snacks all day. We usually eat lean meats and veggies for dinner with occasional bad stuff like wings, fries, or pizza. I'm tempted but I don't want to set myself up to fail. I think I need to read more about it. All I've read are testimonies from friends and the ones in this thread.

I've never felt better than eating whole30. Almost no digestive issues at all, more energy than ever. Helped me end my out of control consumption of coffee.
Sorry to say plantain chips and all other packaged chips are not allowed anymore.(This changed a week or so ago). Melissa feels they are a slippery slope and too easy to end up overeating or eating out of fun, not hunger.

Thanks! I didn't do a full reintro, because I'm starting a new round today. I did have some non-gluten grains last week ( an order of plain, hand cut French fries and some plain organic popcorn with olive oil) and both of those were fine. I did try literally a 1" square of banana bread (gluten) and was running to the bathroom in minutes. So that was the end of that experiment for now. I lost 1/2 pound between rounds (Wednesday-this morning), so I'm happy because I didn't go 'off the rails.' If I were you, I likely would stick to it as much as possible while you're traveling. That is the last thing you want to be doing just in case you have stomach troubles!! Great job to you, too!

I would up your potatoes (I have them about 1/day on average), up your portion sizes and add more healthy fats if you're hungry. As someone who has been on weight watchers for years, probably my biggest challenge was getting out of the smaller portions and low fat mentality! As far as potatoes causing inflammation, I would try it as written for 30 days and see if that helps your health issues. If it doesn't, then it could be something else that you need to try and pinpoint. I know some people eliminate 'nightshades' which seems to help them. That includes tomatoes, eggplant, and white potatoes (and some other things). But it doesn't include sweet potatoes so I would up your sweet potato intake. Good luck!

Yep, and judging by people's reaction to the 'no plantain chips' rule...it was a smart one to add! People clearly were eating those 'without brakes.' I figure if I was that upset that I couldn't have a snack with no nutritional value...I probably don't need to be eating them! I thought they were a gray area, so I had a few, but just didn't feel right about it. I got a small container and didn't finish it in 30 days (it's in the trash now!) My coworker who did it with me lived on them. But she also had an RX or Luna bar for breakfast every today, so we approached our Whole 30 very differently.

But for those people for whom weight loss is a primary matter of improving their health, it is both a tool for weight loss and a re-orientation of the weight-loss mindset. So it kind of is both/and. I have mostly vanity weight to lose but for people who need to lose a very substantial amount because it is adversely affected their health, it is a very useful program as well.

I made many compliant Whole30 dinners that unless I told you they were Whole30, you would never have known. That's the beauty of it. It's real food. You can make it compliant for you and he can add condiments, sauces, etc that are not compliant to his if he chooses. That's one thing I really appreciate about Whole30. It broke my habit of automatically "adding" to certain foods -- ex, butter & sour cream on a potato. You re-learn what many foods actually taste like and how good they are on their own.

I look at it like weight loss is a side effect of using the program to change their relationship with food by using only whole foods. But I just kept repeating "it's only 30 days, it's only 30 days". Then I got to a point where I didn't want to mess up because I made it x days and didn't want to start over.
This is what we do, I didn't want to drag anyone along kickin and screaming. Which is what my family would do. I make a protein, vegs, salad, starch. Sometimes everything is compliant and we all eat all the same foods, sometimes I make their mac and cheese and they eat it and I don't. I made carnitas yesterday and they ate it in tortillas and I ate it on vegetables. I just keep it easy and if they want something else they are on their own. Nice for us that my whole30 improved our restaurant choices because we would go where I could get a steak and vegs or burger no bun and salad or good grilled chicken salad or fish or something.

How heavily does Whole30 rely on nuts? Can someone with a tree nut allergy be successful? Nuts are ok, but not the best fat source (too easy to over do it). Certainly not required for success. I found one bag of mixed nuts at Aldi that I love that I ration to myself. Otherwise, I didn't have any. And i could easily cut them out - I just like them!

Checking in! I'm not done reintroducing yet. I've lost 10-15 lbs. my niece I haven't seen in awhile noticed a difference. I've done fine with dairy and sugar. NonGluten grains are questionable. I got a rash. I'm not sure if it's from the corn or the oats. I'm going to have to try them one at a time.
On Easter we went to the boardwalk. I had 2 pieces of pizza.sad to say, it appears that gluten is not my friend. The next day I had some aches and pains in my knees come back. Worse than that, TMI I had the worst constipation I've had in a long time.
