I swear this is worse than bra shopping with pissed off toddlers who need a nap. I need comfortable, flat, black shoes. I know I am old and comfort is FAR more appealing than fashion, but is too much to ask for shoes that don't make my feet hurt just looking at them but are kind of cute too? I don't do pointy toes, my little toes hate being squished into points. I don't want little ballet flats because they are a bit more casual for the pants I want to wear them with. Comfortable would be lovely. But apparently comfortable and somewhat fashionable are not allowed to be mentioned in the same sentence. I have several pairs of ankle pants that flat shoes would be preferable, but somewhat professional would be good too. Oh, and comfortable. Any suggestions?

I know and some flats are not supportive at all! I like the brands White Mountain, Clark's, and Dr. Scholl's for flat comfortable shoes. Usually get my shoes from Macy's online store or from DSW.

Yes, I have the same problem, too! I have a number of "sitting pretty" dressy shoes that look great and feel ok for a few hours but that's the limit. A friend recommended Munro or Paul Green. Looked at these online but haven't found those same ones in the store yet. Also a bit pricey!

I like Clarks for comfortable flats that are "other than" ballet flats (they do have those too if you want them) check in their dress, casual and comfortable catagories. www.clarksusa.com/us/c/womensI also like to shop Marylandsquare.com for shoes.

I think that all shoes need at least a little rise in the back to be comfortable. I have never found completely flat shoes comfortable. I don't like pointy shoes either. Don't you wish you could design a shoe for yourself?

Yep. My problem is I'm going on a girl's trip soon and we're going to be walking a lot. None of us know what to do for shoes. We want to look cute (we aren't tennis shoe type girls).
But all the brands that are associated with being "comfortable" like Clarks and Dr Scholls and that clog brand scream old lady to me.
Why can't there be something cute with cushioning in it?

I have a similar problem. I wore the "fancy" shoes back in the late 80's and early 90's. Now, 25+ years later I'm all about comfort.
I wear dress slacks to work and usually wear loafer-y type shoes with no more than a 1" heel. Right now I'm wearing Naturalizer and Life Stride brands. My sister who is older and wears skirts and pumps to work calls them my old lady shoes. But it doesn't bother me because my feet don't hurt when I get home.
I'm actually looking for an everyday shoe that I can wear with my jeans that is not a tennis shoe and doesn't look like my husband's shoes.

How do you feel about brogues? I find them much more comfortable than ballet flats, they're stylish (to me anyway) and look good with ankle length trousers. Do they have to be black?

I agree. The last time j looked for black flats, everything had weird bows, gems, old lady look or were so flat there was barely a sole and my feet would have hurt in an hour. I used to love shoe shopping, but the weird fashion styles have taken over.

Lifestride is my go to brand for comfortable yet stylish shoes. I have a stand up desk at my office and spend at least 80% of my day on my feet and never have any issues when I wear my Lifestride boots and booties. They make flats, I haven't bought any. They are true to size and have a great padded insole that makes standing and walking for long periods of time much more comfortable.

For cute-ish walking shoes, I use Skechers Go Walks. I walked over 6 miles in them yesterday with zero issues. I'll walk as much Thursday-Sunday next week and will rotate a few different pair. They aren't super cute shoes I would wear to the office, but they are great when I'm walking all over NASCAR tracks.

For cute-ish walking shoes, I use Skechers Go Walks. I love these shoes so much! They are so comfy, I even wear them around the house; I prefer them to bare feet. I have been trying to find shoes like them that are in the cute-er range and no such luck! I MUST have shoes that do not fall off easily. I have to chase my kid who likes to run away. I'll check out some of these links.

Add narrow feet to the equation and shoe shopping is even more fun. NOT!
In my next life, I want medium width feet and B cup breasts. Is that too much to ask for?

I love flats-I am starting to think I have a problem I have so many :-p. I love Cole Haan flats. They are not all the Cole Haan are the same and you will know as soon as you try them on which was are great if you are walking around. Sam Edelman flats are very comfortable too. I have just ventured to the very expensive brand Tieks. They have every color of the rainbow and I think they are super comfy.

I had just seen an ad for some very cute flats. Earthies bindi in black. So cute. Never heard of Earthies so no idea how they feel but website has great looking shoes that are supposedly comfortable.

I feel your pain (literally). My feet are paying the price for wearing fashionable heels for 40 odd years. My grandfather made custom shoes and he used to admonish me for my footwear choices. I should have listened.
I have had good luck with Talbot's flats. Their driving moccasins are comfortable for business casual. I have also found some nice dressy flats too. I usually wait for their sales,

LOVE these
I bought these from DSW and LOVE them, in fact I'm going to go get another pair this week. I like that they come in wide width as well. I wear them quite a bit even for tradeshows when I have to be on my feet for hours on end. Just to add I'm convinced that there are no shoes that are 100% comfortable when I pass the 6+ hour mark of being on my feet they are just tired at the end of the day.

I really like Clarks shoes as well. I bought a pair of dress flat and brought it to my podiatrist who ripped out the insole and made a thin custom insole for me. I keep those shoes at work and wear them almost everyday.

Dansko makes some cute heels that you cab run in (I've run across a parking lot in them to a meeting ) however they fall apart like old sneakers as they age due to the materials, had I known I'd have worn them out as I saved them for dressier occasions. If I ever get another pair I'll wear them all the time so it won't be as expensive per wearing :-)

Check out Spring Steps. I love my pair and they are really comfortable. I also have a pair by Cobb Hill (Rockport). That are very comfortable.

Good luck on that! I have cracked metatarsal bones in both feet on top of having really narrow feet, so finding flats that were comfortable was a top priority for me back when I had to "dress" for work. I really hate ballet flats so those were immediately out of the running. I always seemed to find classic and comfortable flats from Nine West or Naturalizer. If I would find some I liked I would purchased them in a variety of colors. I tended to go for shoes like these Naturalizer Veronicas. Now I wear Merrell slip on type shoes or Dansko clogs and I am so happy I don't have to worry about shoes anymore. Sorry you do though.

If I were in the market for some comfortable, dressyish flats but didn't want a ballet flat, I think I'd go with a brogue or a driving moccasin style. Or a loafer! Brogues
Driving moccasin

I'd love to know why flats are so hideously ugly and/or masculine looking?
Because of my chemo neuropathy I've had to give up my beautiful shoes. I now have to wear athletic type shoes or flats (ugh and double ugh).
I have 2 pair of flats that aren't fugly. I look often but just can't bring myself to buy such awfuly ugly shoes. Blech.
I'll be watching this thread, hoping to find some options.
