We planted a packet of seeds this year as an experiment- didn't really put much effort into it, just water and sun. No we have 13 stalks, all with ears of corn and I have no idea when to pick it! Right now they are about 8-10 inches long. Help!

Pick the corn when the tassels get dark brown and sticky, then it will be ripe.

Peel back the husk an inch or two and look at the kernels. If they are fully developed and look ripe you can pick it.

It should twist off somewhat easily (it's not going to fall off). Peeling it back a bit to check is good. Don't let it get too ripe - but don't let the coons get it either. No way can we grow sweet corn around here without an all out maximum security defense system around it! LOL
Two low hot wires, woven wire fence and one more hot wire up at the top for the deer. They still try. I also bait a live trap next to the garden.

Please let us know how your corn tastes when you eat it. I always thought it would be cool to grow corn.

No way can we grow sweet corn around here without an all out maximum security defense system around it! LOL Ain't that the truth! A farmer plants acres of field corn on our property. Just to be nice, he plants the outer few rows closest to us with sweet corn. I'll be damned if all the critters out there don't prefer it. More than once in past years, just before we planned on picking it, the coons, deer, turkeys and goodness knows what else, must have had an all night party. Every stalk of sweet corn- gone. Zip. Zilch. yet acres and acres of field corn remained. Little bugger! So far this year (knock on wood) we've had corn and more to come if history doesn't repeat itself. Fingers crossed. Want to freeze some if I get it before four-footed friends.
