I'm thinking of asking for a manual die cutter for Christmas this year. I mainly want it to cut simple shapes efficiently. My question is really what die cutter would you recommend for that purpose and how do you know what dies work with what die cutters? Or are they all pretty much the same? Anything else I need to know? TIA!

I have the Big Shot and it works with many types dies. It comes with a platform with layers and instructions on the layers for the receipt to use with each type die.

I have a big kick, same as a big shot. I really like it. It will cut all types of dies. It is not big enough for the pro dies. But works great with all the ones I own.

Big Shot! Cuts anything but Bigz Pro, commercial and all but the very largest of the Grand Caliber nested dies (but cuts all of the others in the set).

I agree with the big shot/big kick recommendation. I started using this for basic shapes, but now love using stamp/die combos. Have the gifter use a coupon, and then also get the sizzix magnetic platform.

I agree with the Big Shot or Big Kick. I started out with the Cuttlebug and upgraded a couple of years ago.

I've got my eye on the WRMK Revolution... They did a preview (?) sale on HSN, but it starts being stocked in shops in September/October according to the woman at WRMK I spoke to... I don't know how it compares, but I posted a thread asking people if they liked it and everyone said they did... It's the one that you'll be able to buy an attachable motor for so you don't have to crank it by hand... Not why I want it, but if that's of interest to you...

I have never used a cuttlebug before, so I don't know how it is in comparison to the bigshot / big kick. I love my big kick. I had a QK products before and since I got my magnetic plate for my big shot...wow. That was the one thing I missed from my revolution was the magnetic.

I have the Big Shot and the magnetic platform referenced above. I really like it and it's what I recommend to everyone.
I've had a Squeeze, Revolution, Epic, and a BS. I've used the Grand Caliber and Cuttlebug. I find the BS to be very sturdy, the multi-purpose platform to be easy to use, and it works with a variety of dies, including wafer thin dies (like Spellbinders dies) and the thick Sizzix steel rule dies, embossing folders and embossing plates.
You on YouTube and search for the various machines. They all have videos showing how to use them. If you don't have a lot of space or want the machine really portable, you may want a Cuttlebug. If you do a lot of multi media wok and want to cut chipboard and other thick materials, you may want to go with the BS.

I use & highly recommend the Sizzix Big Kick & magnetic platform accessory (for wafer thin dies) - both available at big box stores with a coupon. HTH

I have the Cuttlebug and the Big Shot Pro..love my cuttlebug. DF has the Big Shot and its nice too but I personally didn't care for figuring out the sandwich for cutting the dies..I think with the Cuttlebug it seemed pretty straight forward..but like I said..that's just me.

Side lined my old die cutter for the Evolution Advanced, and the ease of use with the magnetic platform, has renewed my enthusiasm for die cutting. I love that you don't have to have all different platforms, you just dial in the adjustment. Less stuff to clutter up your work surface, less mistakes and wasted paper. I'm very impressed

It doesn't seem to have a large footprint, but the handle juts out and I have a difficult time finding a place for it. If space is an issue, you might want to take measurements. I also have to use washi to keep many of the dies in place. A magnetic mat may help, but it's one more thing to buy.

I have the Big Kick (basically the same machine, different name/color) and it will cut just about any other manufacturers' dies. I love it!

I have the Big Shot and use it all the time, I like to use embossing folders with it, too. I can get an almost letterpress look by adding a little ink or paint to the design.

If you only plan to do wafer thin dies and not the bulkier sizzix brand. Then a spellbinder grand would be my choice. Fits an 8.5" of paper for their larger.

I love my Big Shot so much that I sought out the discontinued electric one. It's just like the Vagabond but not as ugly.

I have owned QK revolution, epic 6, big shot, vagabond and grand calibur (and tried cuttlebug), and my favorite is my big shot. It's versatile and sturdy and worth every penny!

Thank you for all the input. I'm not quite ready to make the leap yet but this has been a big help in knowing what I'm looking at.

I have the Epic 6 which is being replaced by the WRMK Evolution, I think. I also have the Genius magnetic platform with it so my dies don't move when I put them on it. I can letterpress with the Epic 6 model because I have the add-on kit they make for it. Here is a great deal on everything - die cutting, embossing and letterpressing: EvolutionIf you look at this link and view picture [HASH]2, you can also see a list of other dies this machine will cut. Most of the machines listed above will also cut other brands of dies, so this isn't special to the Evolution. Hope this helps! If you buy an Epic, be very careful and make sure that the retailer has a good return policy. Approximately 10% of Epics are defective. The openings aren't a consistent thickness and dies won't fully cut. They tried to solve this by gluing a shim to the cutting platform and making the cutting plate thinner, but then the cutting plates warpd horribly. So then they went to a flexible mat, which is basically a self healing mat. Those warp as well, but you can bake them in the oven to flatten them again. The Letterpress kit will fit in the Big Shot, Big Kick, the new WRMK cup utter and any other machine that is 6" wide and thick enough to accommodate the Letterpress.

I use my Big Shot all the time. I just ordered the magnetic plate so I can use the new wafer thin dies. It seems like that's the way the industry is moving now, to the thin dies. That was all they had a CKC Lancaster.

Another Big Shot fan here. I've had mine for several years and I love it. I have the rubber mat to cut my Spellbinder embossing dies and the magnetic plate, which holds the metal dies in place when I want them to cut on a specific part of the paper. I actually use it more than I do my Cricut .

Another vote for the Big Shot. I started out with a Cuttlebug but found that it wasn't sturdy enough for me. I don't have space issues so I sold the Cuttlebug and got a Big Shot. Never looked back. I also recently bought the Vagabond which is basically the electronic version of the Big Shot. The only reason I bought it was because it was on clearance at Ms and the price was too good to pass up. I did consider returning it, but I couldn't part with it and so now it too sits on a table in my craft room. I don't get much time to scrap in the summer so I haven't actually used it and can't comment on it, but from what I've read, people love it.
