I stopped at Michaels over the weekend and was surprised to find that their prices were double what I was seeing elsewhere (for Tim Holtz products anyway). Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes...I am seeing that they are way off on many of their products.

You can use coupons for his stuff. Wonder if Tim has a new agreement with Michaels and his product. Wonder if HL and JoAnn's will also go up in price.

I wouldn't say double (at least in my area), but they are higher. I usually only buy from them if the item is on sale or I can use a coupon or I need something immediately. Hmmm, maybe that's the reason, too many coupon users, so they raise the regular price which makes the overall price higher if you use a coupon.

Their regular prices are typically higher than MSRP on pretty much everything and have been for a long time. Years ago I think I figured out that their regular prices on stuff was on average at least 20% higher on name brand things that could be compared apples to apples. Having said that, there were also items that were from the same brands but were NOT the same product; i.e. Patterned papers that were single sided vs. double sided, thinner paper weight vs. cardstock weight, same product but smaller/lower quantity, etc. which would make it not easy to compare apples to apples.

I have noticed the higher prices too on a number of items at Michael's from their home decor to paper crafting. I don't live close to it so the last few times I have been to Michael's I walked out empty handed. I felt like those were wasted trips, lol.
One of my favorite You Tuber's she is a Michael's junkie. She doesn't really do other crafts. To be fair she doesn't know what the price points of things are like most of us do. She gets so excited about all the great deals she finds. I want to let her know it's not that good of deal but I hate to burst all her happiness and her newfound love of paper crafting. Michael's is really tailoring their prices to hobbyist or newbie crafter's.
Ten dollars for a book of stickers and $4.00 for their version of Jolee's stickers. Three-Six dollars for post it notes. Michael's has lost their minds, lol. I will always love Michael's. I am so careful shopping there now. Don't even get me started on their confusing coupon policies they have implemented & that everyday value line.

Prices in Canada have been almost double forever. I'm not sure I've ever bought anything without a coupon or sale! It really grinds my gears, so I give my business to the local art store, LSS, or even online site, before I give it to Ms. (I did get the Jane Davenport mermaid markers at M's recently. But I had a 60% coupon in my hand )

This is a rumor. On another s/b forum, someone spoke to a JoAnn's employee. Apparently, they are eliminating TH's line at J's. They will replace with Hero Arts products.

I think that's why I have only been to a Michael's 4x in the past 5 years. I can find much better prices elsewhere.

I heard someone say on IG (she is a shopping addict...has only been crafting for a little over a year and has probably 2-3000 washis...I wish I were joking, she buys doubles, triples and quadruples of many of them and doubles of things like paper pads from M's even though there are 2 of each paper, she won't use one if she doesn't have a second one in perfect condition) that M's is increasing their prices systematically in the scrapbooking department.
A few months ago, they had these bling bag things (Disney TSUM TUMS) for what you could find them at other stores. $2.99. Less than 2 weeks later, they were $4.99 and always on sale for 40% off or BOGO half off or something, making them retail everywhere else or more, depending on the sale. It doesn't shock me that they are increasing prices elsewhere...because many people will pay full price at a local store but won't at a chain. The difference for me is this: I know retail pricing and I won't pay that even if it has a sale sticker on it making it appear to be a good deal.
All I can say is it's a good thing that I have a decent stash because I won't pay the asking prices if I can surmise they've been drastically jacked up just to bluff a sale. I'm not stupid...but they are betting there are enough people out there who are. I think it's foolish when people pay full price for ANYTHING at M's (I will coupon a 49 cent lollipop if everything I have is on sale and my kid wants one) but now those people are going to feel downright giddy because the items will look like they are on sale when they really aren't. You know why the market for paper crafting was suffering? It was already ridiculously expensive to get involved in...now it's going to price even more people out from pure sticker shock. I just can't with these money hungry corporations who want to do nothing but pay minimum wage while doing all that they can to automate as much as they can so they can get away with hiring fewer and fewer people. Don't they realize that they are contributing to the downfall of this country? The fewer people you (and businesses like you) hire, the fewer people there are going to be with any money at all to even spend with you. We aren't too far off from being a world of having to choose between food OR shelter. Perhaps I've spent too much time on NSBR this morning...

I will not pay the regular price at Michael's in Canada as the prices are so inflated. Tim Holtz stencils were half again as much at Michael's than what I can pay to a small retailer on line. It has been that way for years, nothing new here, although we are probably going to see the prices even higher.
I hate that we don't have other options locally.

I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to notice this because over the past couple of years I find myself going into Michael's less and less. After they wanted almost $80 for a Halloween wreath caused me to walk out, it was nothing but fake flowers, a small styrofom skull, and some other random things superglued to the wreath. I made my own for $20... I also realized that they've become very restrictive with their coupons now. I was able to get the Instax printer for $50 after combining coupons and the fact they didn't exclude it from their T&C. I've even had sales reps refuse to honor promotions and coupons (mostly because you can stack them) because they were told not to honor them. I was challenging them but now if they refuse, I just walk out.

Yup their prices have always been way more. In Canada they advertise the Instax printer for $399 which is crazy because I can walk next door to Best buy and purchase the same printer for $149. I always use coupons and have no problem walking out empty handed.

Wow, I don't know where I've been because this is the first I noticed it...but then, I don't shop locally as much as I used to. I thought that maybe they inflated prices on the brand-name stuff in order to coerce people to buy the Recollections brand. At any rate, my excursions to Ms will be fewer still.

What I have noticed is that if Aaron Brothers has the same product, it is usually cheaper than Michaels, even though they are both owned by the same company. I still have an Aaron Brothers near me, so I often go there to buy art supplies.

Honestly for the last few months I can't even find anything I want to buy at Michaels. I have good coupons, but I have so much adhesive stockpiled it isn't even worth the stop there for that to use the coupons. I have gone in many times and didn't buy anything over the last few months.

Why was I ever using the blonde highlights? LOL!

Thanks for pointing this out. I guess I won't be shopping at Michaels in the future... I hate this kind of crap and won't play their game. I don't do coupons if I can avoid it (I don't get the local paper, I toss junk mail without looking at it, and I generally refuse to give out personal info/sign up for mailing lists) and I don't always know what other stores are charging because I try to avoid shopping triggers. I guess it's a good thing that the Joann's down the street from my local Michaels is finally stocking good products, although I'm not much of a fan of their company either...

Haven't really shopped much at M's lately. But I noticed th same thing at Joann's rgarding home dec items. MThey have them priced so high you wouldn't ever buy them without a coupn or a big sale.

A package of Holtz Distress Crayons was $17.99 at Michaels. The same package was $12.99 at Hobby a Lobby and I could use a 40% off coupon. I was offended by the $5.00 difference. They were willing to price match, but I probably won't be going back anytime soon.

The crazy part is that I would spend more if they had normal prices. But like others have said, I don't buy if it's not on sale or if I don't have a coupon.

I often shop in the Michael's near where I work in Manhattan (NYC), and they don't even honor most of the 40% off coupons. You'll notice that most of them say, "Excludes Manhattan Stores." So I usually use my JoAnn's 40% and 50% off coupons.

Their pricing seems to have really shifted. The sales seem to make items regular retail elsewhere. I also don't like the coupon policy inconsistency. I never know if I'm going to get someone who's willing to stack coupons or not.

I find at M's that I go to use a coupon and the item comes up that it is on sale so coupon doesnt apply even tho there is no sign n the shelf. J's does the same thing. And when questioned, the response is always that somone took the sign.

I live out in the middle of nowhere as I call it. I do have a local Stamping store with some scrapbooking but they are small. I've noticed the 2 Walmarts closest to me have shrunk the scrapbooking sections. I always use a coupon at Ms and search the clearance section.

I stopped at JoAnne's today to take advantage of their 40% off paper crafting supplies. J's had the TH clock that I was looking for at Michaels. I always thought that J's was more expensive than Michaels...but J's had the clock for $9.99 with 40% off. The clock at M's was $19.99 - no kidding - and no sale price. Now that's a HUGE difference.
