I was in JoAnn's the other day and bought a few craft things. On the way out I remembered my DD had a bday and wanted to get her friend an Apple gift card, so I added it to my basket. When I got to the checkout the woman starting ringing up my items and totaled them w/o the gift card. I pointed it out to her. She said, "no, you have to go wait in that line because cashiers are not allowed to ring gift cards w/other items - it has to be a separate transaction w/a different cashier". I was like, "WTF?" So I stood to wait for the other cashier and then I remembered that I'm not an idiot and I just put it back. I can buy gift cards anywhere, why would I wait twice and have to have 2 transactions to buy a gift card? Is that an idiotic policy or am I missing something??!?!

That sounds pretty idiotic to me. Whenever I have gotten gift cards to purchase, its always been paid for along with the other stuff I am buying

Any stores that make it difficult to buy things are idiots. Otherwise what's the point of running a business?

sounds like Joanns has had a issue with employees being less than truthful when ringing up giftcards....

Well not to defend Joann, but there is a scam involving the purchase of gift cards.
I've only heard about it for TRU or Best Buy (mostly with electronics). The bad guy literally has a cart filled to overflowing with stuff and at the beginning of the transaction says "oh and before I forget I need a gift card with $100 (or whatever amount). Then bad guy then sly-ly passes the activated gift card to a buddy who then immediately uses it to purchase something in the next line. The original guy "forgot" his wallet and the transaction has to be voided. But the gift card has already been used.

Definitely sounds like an internal control issue. I get my gift cards at the grocery store (Safeway) and they always ring them and authorize them last, just before I pay.

I don't mind if they need to do it last for controls reasons. I don't much care what order they ring in. I do very much care about having it have to be a separate transaction at a separate register. They better figure out another control mechanism if they want people to buy gift cards there.

It may be unique to your store. Wondering if it's a company-wide policy.

That's ridiculous. I can't imagine very many people are willing to wait in two separate lines to purchase a gift card you can get anywhere.

If it truly is an issue, then I would be fine to ring it up separately, but right away. I'm not waiting in line again. I go to JoAnn's frequently at 3 on a weekday and routinely wait ten minutes in line. I'm not doing that twice.

I wonder if that cashier didn't know how to ring up a gift card purchase and just made that up as an excuse?

Many also require cash.
When I worked at M's, people were using fraudulent visa gift cards to buy huge demonination store specific gift cards that were valid. I was robbed of over $1,000 in gift cards as a result. Soooo, keep in mind that there could be a very valid reason. Not everyone is honest and businesses need to find a way to protect themselves against those people.

Wow, that is insane. If they have such a problem with fraud, they really shouldn't sell them. This policy makes honest customers very frustrated!

I do get finishing the transaction and doing a separate one for the gift card. Waiting on another line...not so much.

I no longer give gift cards. I write a check, actually The Queen writes the check. If I were to give a card it would be a Visa, they are far more flexible. But why pay money to give money?

I saw a commercial around Christmas two years ago, calling a gift card 'the next best thing' to cash. Ever since then, I only give cash.

I wasn't defending JoAnn's policy, just throwing a possible reason why they have it. and FTR, I would not stand in line again for a gift card, especially one I can get anywhere.

I think it ridiculous. If someone voids a transaction, the card should be voided. Problem fixed. Geesh, why even bother selling gift cards in the store then.
