So DH and I were away last week, and we missed out on Shrove Tuesday. My kids rose to the challenge and make potato pancakes, regular pancakes and chocolate chip pancakes.
Growing up, my Italian grandmother would make potato pancakes, and we always had syrup with them (as in maple syrup).
My kids are horrified, and insist they should have ketchup with them.
There were leftovers, which I just heated up. DD put cheese in them (ew but ok) so I opted for the ketchup. I'm just not feeling it.
I went back to syrup, and NOW it feels like potato pancakes!
What do you do?

Are you talking grated type potato or mashed up to look like a real pancake? Latka? Applesauce, sour cream, syrup.
Catsup! If I spend over a hour making food and you put catsup on it I probably will go apeshit on you.

When I make potato pancakes, they have onion in them, and we call them latkes.
Latkes are traditionally eaten with sour cream and/or applesauce (I do both), but I've heard some people eat them with jam (not me).

Always apple sauce and sour cream.
If you put ketchup on them, they're hash browns. (IMO)

hash browns = salt only.
Potato pancakes (with onion) = applesauce + sour cream

sour cream, mustard, horseradish, ketchup (sister not me) Never heard of putting sweet syrup on them but mom always put onion in them so they were savory instead of a sweet item. We always had them as a side at supper like a substitute for potatoes prepared other ways.

Recently had potato pancakes at a restaurant. They had crumbled goat cheese and green onions on top. Served with an apple cider reduction. Fabulous!

My mom used the fine grater and did not put onions in them. We always put clear Karo syrup on them. (don't judge lol) I haven't had them in YEARS. Mmmmm, I can practically taste them now.

The only way I have potato pancakes is when I make latkes. Potato, onion, egg, and a bit of matzoh meal or flour. I offer applesauce, sour cream, or cinammon sugar. I prefer applesauce on them.

We eat them with sour cream and applesauce - although I've subbed out cranberry jelly (whole berry kind) for apple sauce before. NEVER syrup - yuck - or ketchup.

My mom always served it with ketchup or salt but we're Chinese so it's not a traditional food for us. We also made our tacos from an Ortega kit, I'm sure that would offend a few purists too :-)

Whenever I take out the bottle of Karo for a recipe, DH likes to reminisce about having it on pancakes in his childhood. But for latkes/potato pancakes, even if they have onion in them (and they should) it's applesauce all the way!

When I was a kid my mama made potato pancakes...but she made them with smooshed up left over mashed potatoes. She would fry them up in the iron skillet and the edges would be crispy perfect and the insides soft and fluffy like little angel beds.We would eat them with ketchup. I suspect that this was because we poor and used up every single bit of food we had.

Just a little butter for me. I've heard of people putting syrup on them but that seems weird to me.

Whatever we have to be honest. I could enjoy ketchup or sour cream or nothing. I eat potato pancakes any way I can get them.

Sour cream. I know it's traditional but I don't see the appeal of applesauce with potato pancakes.

I've had them with sour cream topped with apple BUTTER, which is much different than apple sauce and oh, so delicious.

We use sour cream at my house. A lot of people around here use ketchup. Some use applesauce. We call them bleenies. They are very popular at the church festivals and fire company block parties around here. There is always a long line.

Whether it is traditional latkes from the deli in Brooklyn (I grew up in Brooklyn Heights, NYC) or the kind my mom made with leftover mashed potatoes with spinach or turnips mixed in, I like butter, salt, and pepper.

My Dad made latkes and I always had them with a little butter but my siblings ate them with sour cream. We may have had apple sauce but I don't remember.
