Tuesday (8/19) I'm getting friends and family telling me I ought to press about the costs since the van is a 2007 model year, and there was only 88455 miles on the engine. WAAAAAAAY too low they are telling me for having a rod thrown. What would you do and where would you go to first to complain?? Seeking advice and stories about what you, or someone you know has done. I'll go dig up some more money from "somewhere" to pay for the repairs in the mean time. Monday (8/18) 3:30 pm got the repair estimate about $6000!!! Digging into investments to come up with the cash. Friday: My Dodge 2007 Caravan had a thrown rod. It is NOT under warranty (ran out earlier this year). Had only 88455 in mileage and all servicing was at the dealership. The service rep is trying to get "something" from Dodge on the costs to remove and replace the engine. Any prayers and positive thoughts would be nice. No warning, no knocking, just an "plunk" "shudder" loss of engine compression, and power. It limped to the side of the road at an exit. Less than 8 days prior I was driving back from Ohio. I'm just glad I was near home when it happened.

That stinks. I'm glad there was no accident. Hopefully the fact that you had all of the servicing done at the dealership works to your advantage. I hope the bill that they present you with isn't too outrageous. Sending positive vibes that something gets worked out.

You have my whole hearted sympathy. I understand what a shock that is to your system and pocketbook when a vehicle just goes out with no warning.
Our 2001 Honda Odyssey lost its transmission on 7/3 as my DD was driving herself and her BF home from college. Just stopped responding in the fast lane with no warning; she managed to coast it to the start of the nearest exit ramp, and that was it. We were told it would be about $4k to replace the transmission and it just wasn't worth it, especially since it had almost 250k miles on it. We bought a used 2012 Accord that weekend since I had to have a vehicle for DD to drive back to school on Sunday. Her Saturn was one of the vehicles in solved in ALL of the recent recalls and we didn't feel she was safe driving in it. GM rented a car for us, since we used the phrase "don't feel safe," but Enterprise won't let a 19 yo drive their rentals.
I really, really miss my van. I keep thinking of things that I need to pick up from Home Depot, then I remember that they won't fit in the Accord. If it had been $2k, i'd have done it, but I just couldn't justify $4k for a vehicle of that age and mileage. The kicker? I had just found out that DH's Accord was going to be paid off in November, ore than 6 months ahead of schedule because of the extra we paid each month. Now, I have double car payments until November, then singles for a couple more years. Sigh

Is the quote for a new or a rebuilt engine? Did the dealership give a reason the engine threw a rod? This answer would determine if the dealership/manufacturer should pay for the engine. I would also look up dealer recalls for your make and model. That might give you some leverage.
As far as blowing a rod with such low mileage, it is not unheard of. No oil is the most common reason and is most often the owners fault, but not always.

honestly the average resale on that car is $6100 (dealer resale - private sale is $4800). I would not be fixing it.

Is that $6k quote from the dealer? I would get an estimate from other mechanics if the manufacturer doesn't help out.

The van can't be worth more than $6,000. I would not fix the current van and I would look for a new vehicle.

Have you already agreed to having the work done? $6000 is too much! My husband is a mechanic and he has done plenty of engines for usually around $3000?!? Dealerships can be great but they are also a rip-off, much higher parts mark-ups and hourly turn rate.

As far as blowing a rod with such low mileage, it is not unheard of. No oil is the most common reason and is most often the owners fault, but not always. I just had it in the dealership's service department a couple months ago (mid-May). All fluid levels were good, oil was still good, oil change was due in another 2000 miles. They had also accomplished a mileage inspection at the time too. There was also no prior unusual engine noise for this as well. I'm getting relatives telling me to call Dodge direct, because of the low engine mileage. Especially those that have worked in the automotive industry. The service manager had called Dodge about it. Interesting, I've been on the phone with Dodge and somehow got added to a phone patch between Dodge (a different person) and the Dealership's Service manager, and he's still trying to get a larger discount from Dodge on the replacement engine, I could hear them they did not hear me. (weird) Then the Dodge rep is back with me and just repeats what the other person said.
