My son is getting married in May. The ceremony is at 2pm and the reception is at 6pm. The event is black tie optional and both dads are wearing tuxedos. I have been shopping for dresses and not having a lot of luck. I sent a photo of another choice to my daughter and she replied, "You're going to need Spanx with that." Point taken. Now I found one that looks pretty good. I'm concerned about a couple of things and could use some fashion advice. TIA 1. Is a beaded dress OK for a daytime wedding? 2. Is navy acceptable for daytime and/or a spring/summer wedding? 3. Is sleeveless ok for a woman of a certain age? My arms aren't all that wonderful and I'm going to have a little wrap made to match.

I think that dress is perfectly appropriate for the mother of the groom, no matter the hour of the wedding. It's lovely!

It's not about age, but if you're arms aren't great, I'd find a dress with sleeves.

Thanks for the input. I'm still mulling over the sleeveless part. Maybe I'm harder on myself than I should be. Or not.

It's pretty and I think a little wrap will be fine.

That doesn't say daytime in the spring/summer to me.

A lot of the definitions of black tie that I have seen say long and darker colors. So I say it works. It is very pretty. But the real question is do you feel good in it? Because if you do, get that pretty wrap and rock it.

My son got married last May, in the South. The ceremony was outside at 6pm and it was hot as hades already. I'm so glad I went sleeveless, otherwise I would have been sweaty and miserable. My arms are a little pudgy but I figured they looked better than me with sweat-stained underarms! My dress was navy with a bling-beaded waistline. I got lots of compliments on it but unfortunately the heat and humidity killed my hair. Oh well, everyone was looking at the bride anyway ... right??

First of all I think the dress is very lovely and would be totally fine.
Technically black tie weddings are only supposed to be in the evening -- and since your wedding is daytime and in spring I might go with something still sparkly but maybe in a champagne or blush or even like a sea foam color.

This is exactly the conundrum I was having. The ceremony is at 2:00pm but the reception isn't until 6:00pm. I looked at champagne and I looked awful. Didn't see any blush color dresses that I like so far. I've looked at all the department stores and David's Bridal and the selection isn't great unless you're going to a prom. I have 180 days to return it if it still has the tags.

Also maybe look at past photos of yourself and see if there are colors you like better than others. What about the dress you have with a slightly lighter wrap? That would be pretty

I think it's a lovely dress and if it looks good on and makes you feel pretty, wear it!

Yes, yes and probably not. If you are self-conscious about your arms and are depending on a wrap, you'll be fussing with that thing the entire time. I know mother of the bride/groom dresses are a pain to shop for but it sounds like you have some time. You want to feel and look good so you can enjoy the event.

What about a shrug instead of a wrap? Have one made in a sparkly material? That way you wouldn't be worried about it slipping or falling. Maybe something like this one?

Maybe something like this one? That's totally going to fight with the dress, sparkles over sparkles is just too much. I think the dress is very pretty but maybe a little dark for daytime. How about a lighter blue or silvery blue?

I would not buy a dress that you have to add something to it or fuss with it. If you don't like it sleeveless than get something else. Shrugs and all that stuff rarely look formal enough unless they are made to go with the dress.

Thank you all for your input. I'll keep the dress I have and hope I come up with the perfect dress. I can still return it.

Sue, that dress is beautiful! smasonnc I like your dress as well. I would never wear it though because I hate my upper arms and would not feel comfortable in it. I would keep looking. You will find something that is just right.

That dress is nice. Thanks for that website. I am not finding what I want locally so I may try them. Did you notice that each dress is custom-made to their customers measurements? I thought that was really interesting. I read the reviews for this dress and it sounds like they have satisfied customers for quality, fit, and fast delivery. Not an endorsement since I've never ordered from them... just what I read on their site.

I couldn't figure out how to link this dress from Rent the Runway, but how about this? Sleeves, summery color, formal. smasonncAttachments:
