This happened where my parents are buried. I have not had a chance to check to see if theirs is still there. I am sure they were stolen for the metal to sell for cash. Doesn't the cemetery hold some responsibility?

Its been my experience that no, the cemetery is not responsible. Someone stole our daughters vases and we either had to replace them ourselves or do without.

I don't think the cemetery is responsible unless it's one of those where all the headstones have to be the exact same way and there are approved vases. Even then, I'm not sure the vases would be covered.

I'd be shocked if there wasn't verbiage in the sales contract absolving them of responsibility. No, IMO the cemetery should not be responsible. I can't imagine how the cemetery could prevent this from happening without very restrictive and *expensive* security measures put in place.

I wouldn't think the cemetary has responsibility. I presume it is open to anyone being able to get in? From my experience, any damage or stolen items are the responsibility of the family. For this reason, having any valuable that isn't fixed isn't advisable. This is usually in the paperwork that you get before interment.
I'm sorry this has happened, people are real low lifes to steal from a cemetary.

Usually cemeteries are not held responsible for any theft or damage. They maintain the cemetery itself, but the headstone and any other property are typically up to the family to deal with. I'm sorry someone has stolen the vase. I don't understand why people do these things.

Unless the cemetery is gated and sells itself as a secure facility with a guarantee, the cemetery itself should have no responsibility.
I'd like to think karma will bite the thieves in the ass many times over.

there are sick people out there. I am sorry about your daughter's vase mom Thanks. Someone took both of our daughters flower vases and then cleared out the entire section of the cemetery where she is buried. I bet they took atleast 25 vases. FWIW, we filed a police report and then the cemetery told us to take the report to the place were we had gotten our headstone. The headstone people took off quite a bit of the cost to replace them because of theft. We got something like 40% off...apparently this is a service that many do to help those famlies who have already purchased the vases once and then have to purchase them again do to crime.

This should be covered in the contract with the cemetery.
You'd have to read the contract for an answer.

I'm sorry this has happened, people are real low lifes to steal from a cemetary. I, too, am sorry this happened. I can't imagine what goes through a person's head to do that. I think the cemetery probably words their contracts so that they aren't responsible for theft.

I doubt if it's covered, but if you purchased them from the cemetery, it might be part of the endowment care for the memorial. That's nice that the monument company gave you a discount to replace them, mom. Bronze is a high-theft item these days, even from cemeteries. Sad but true. People suck.

This. Every time I go to the cemetery to put flowers on my grandmother's grave, I hold my breath. So many cemeteries are the victim's of theft for the bronze vases in our area.

How about putting pinwheels at her grave? They don't cost much and would move in the wind. Would be very pretty to see.

My mom used to live across the street from a cemetery and she would see people pull up in cars and steal not only the vases and such, but also the flowers from fresh funeral services. She basically had the cemetery office on speed dial and she would call as soon as she saw anything suspicious. The cemetery people were very grateful and told her they have a huge problem with groups that research funerals in the newspaper and then come steal the flowers to use for weddings and events. How sick is that?!?

That pretty much killed my desire to ever receive red roses on Valentine's day or really ever.

The person who stole them is responsible. Unfortunately, cemetery thieves are rarely caught, leaving families financially responsible for replacement of damaged or stolen vases/flowers/statues/etc.

I'm wondering if it's people that steal them to sell them because who is so cheap that they swing by the cemetery on the way to their Valentine's date.

At the cemetery where my dad is buried, the cemetery will not replace the stolen vases and it is up to the family.
A year or so ago, mom called upset after a visit to the cemetery because Dad's vase was gone. I called the cemetery and they quoted me what it would cost to replace the vase and I believe it was between $400 - $500, which was staggering to us considering that it could be gone again in a month, so we opted not to replace it at that time.
Last month my DH visited the cemetery with us and we were talking about the missing vase and he went up to Dad's grave and reached for the chain that the vase was attached to and lifted and the vase was actually still attached, but it had been turned upside down. Apparently it had been there all along, Mom just didn't realize it. She was SO relieved.

That stinks that they stole the vases. In reference to the flower stealing, how do you know it wasn't family that came back to take the flowers. After my MIL passed away my SIL and I went back and got some of the flowers to take home. We didn't want to take them during the service as that just seemed wrong. I'm pretty sure that my MIL would have been just fine with that.

thanks for the answers. I guess I knew this, but it doesnt seem fair. Unless you have paid for security, how is it "fair" that the cemetery be responsible? Yes, it is a crappy thing to happen, and I am sorry, it would be fair for the thrives to be held responsible, but that is unlikely to happen
