I was at a painting class last night, where we used stencils cut by the provider from fairly heavy vinyl. I saw their commercial cutter from a distance and got to thinking: could I cut scrapbooking stencils using my Cricut?
Then I thought about silhouette vinyl. I have never even looked closely at it. Is it sturdy enough to use as a stencil? If I can cut it with my Cricut, would I need a special blade?

You don't say which Cricut you have, but even the original baby bug should be able to cut vinyl.
I have tried a variety of vinyl products. I can't remember if I have used Silhouette vinyl, but all the vinyl I have tried can be used as a stencil. I have even cut stencil plastic with my Cameo, no problem. I am pretty sure my Cricut Expression could cut most thin stencil plastic, too. I know the Cricut Explore could.
I do recommend using a new blade, though, one that has NOT been used for cardstock. You should not need a heavy duty or deep cut blade for just vinyl.

Yes,Silhouette vinyl is basically or exactly the same thing as Cricut vinyl and Oracal 631. Oracal 651 is the same, just has permanent adhesive. I much prefer Oracal 631/Silhouette vinyl as a stencil for glass etching rather than Contact paper which many people use.
