We just came back from a road trip for a family reunion in Nova Scotia. We decided this time to travel through New England. Mostly we stayed in B&Bs, but when we stayed in hotels/motels in New England, there was always an envelope so you could leave a tip for the housekeeper.
Do you tip housekeepers/room maids at hotels, or do you feel they are just doing their job?

Yes - it's customary to tip a few dollars per day, more for twice a day service or service beyond expected. I'm horrible about remembering to do it daily, I know it's preferred as then the actual person who cleans receives the tip, but often I tip for the entire stay on the day we leave.

We usually put up the Do Not Disturb sign during our stay. On our last day we clean up the hotel room - our towels are nicely put on a pile on the floor, we kinda make the bed, all the trash is in the same spot, etc. If DBF is on a business trip and just spends the night, I don't think he tips. For some reason, I only do it in Vegas. IDK why.

I usually tip everyday. Sometimes I forget which is why I say "usually". But, I don't always find an envelope to leave a tip in. When I don't have an envelope, I try to find an obvious, out in the open, this is for you, kind of place to put it.

I tip a couple dollars for each day I'm there, more if the service is outstanding. I have always left it at the end, but realized recently that each day may have a different maid and it would probably be better to tip EACH day instead.

I either do a couple of bucks each day or if I don't have change, I just do it all at once at the end of the visit. Especially if we got good towel animals

I always tip $2-3 daily and then a bit more at the very end of my stay. I also try to keep things clean while I am there. Keep the towels hung up, wipe the counter down and keep my crap off of flat surfaces that need to be wiped down.

I/we tip generally per day, but all at the end. We always put up the do not disturb sign, so they really only clean once, but will stop the service in the hallway for extra towels or what ever is needed as we go along.

No, I don't tip at hotels. I paid plenty for my stay as it is. I always put up the do not disturb sign so my room is not serviced until I leave. To be perfectly honest, I loath the concept of tipping!

I have never tipped at a hotel and have never seen an envelope or any mention of tipping in any of the rooms that I have stayed in. I don't recall ever seeing anyone that I travelled with leave a tip either. Honestly, I never realized that people did that. Well, other than on cruises.

Absolutely! Always leave a note and as generous a tip as I can. My mom was a hotel housekeeper. She cherished the personal notes people left her and the tips really helped.

I don't. Are hotel workers paid wait staff wages? If a hotel is charging me over a hundred a day to stay there I expect them to pay their staff accordingly.

Always. Usually about $3 per day. If we stay for a prolong visit, I will also tip the the person who works the breakfast area.

I tip the maid a couple of dollars per person per day. I also tip the bellman for bringing the bags to our suite. If we have room service, that person receives a tip as well.
Regardless of what the room costs these service people in the hospitality industry are at the lower end of the pay scale and depend on this income to feed their families. We also keep our room tidy and really not tipping wouldn't serve to improve my life but makes a difference in someone else's. I'd rather give a hand up to someone who works hard than someone looking for a handout.

We usually tip a bit at the end. We also put up the "do not disturb" sign and then ask for extra towels when we see housekeeping. I also try to put trash in one spot and any dishes in the sink (if it has a kitchen).

I do not tip. Because housekeeping uses the same rag to clean everything, I wipe down the room and bathroom with Lysol wipes as soon as I drop my luggage and I put up the Do Not Disturb sign so housekeeping does not get things dirty again. I bring my own garbage bag and everything gets put into there. Judging by the amount of grime I get on my Lysol wipes, I do not feel the need to tip.

We usually stay in hotels while at a resort in Mexico or Cuba. So knowing that these ladies are making next to nothing, we tip every day. At least $2 US, usually 3, and for excellent service $5. We've been places where after the first day's tip we get fantastic floral arrangements, extra turn-down with a chocolate in the evening or my kid's stuffed animals organized and arranged. I would tip in these places regardless, but it's nice to feel that we both get something out of it. I figure on my 8 day stay I'm only paying $25 to $40 more on a multi-thousand dollar trip and the person who needs it the most gets it.
As to where to leave a tip? You have to be thoughtful, as maids will not touch something that is not obviously for them. I have lefts notes, but usually left on the end of the bed works just great. I once did that in Mexico and the maid made the bed and put the money back on top! Bless.

My first job, besides babysitting, was cleaning motel rooms on the weekends and in the summer. It was a horribly disgusting job some of the time. I think I may have received a tip once and possibly picked up some change that was accidentally left once or twice.
I always tip in hotels! I know you pay well to stay there, and no, the maids are not paid waitstaff wages, but are usually paid minimum wage. I just think it's a pretty thankless job much of the time and I appreciate a clean room, extra towels, or whatever. I will always leave a tip...as someone else said, what's a few dollars when you've spend thousands on a trip?

The main reason I would like to have an envelope is because I don't want the cleaning person to not know if the money left is for her/him or not. I recently returned from a trip and there were not an envelope. The room had a coffee table that was by a couch. I would leave the money in the middle of the empty coffee table with only a hotel related thing sitting on the corners of the money. I would have preferred an envelope.

We always tip. DS [HASH]1 sometimes leaves drawings, too. Sometimes housekeeping leaves a drawing back. One year we found out the the woman taking care of our room was there for the summer and that her mother was a server at a local restaurant. The woman caring for our room always set up all of DS's stuffed animals and books so cute each day. We had breakfast at that restaurant one day and we had her mom as our server and we told her that we "knew" her daughter, and how nice she was to DS, and her mother was so pleased. It was fun. People like to make little connections like that sometimes.

Sometimes if we love the service we've been getting we do both. It's a thankless job, and I think it probably makes their day when anyone is willing to give just a bit extra for them.
And let's face it, of all the money the hotels are generating, the people cleaning the rooms are receiving the very least of it on an individual basis.

What we do is grab a piece of hotel stationary, write a little note ("Thanks for taking care of our room!" or "Can we please have 2 extra towels each day?" etc.) and we leave the money right on top of the paper, and we stick it someplace really obvious where they would have to see it/move it....like right in the middle of the bed, or on the bathroom counter.

For those of you that hang the do not disturb signs, I would assume the maid thinks you're sleeping in late and then has to make multiple trips back to your floor to check if you've woken up and removed the sign.
