Chicago is a great place for food! A hot dog is a red hot - do not even consider ketchup on it or you will be laughed out of town. Be sure and get some popcorn too.

We really don't do deep dish. We're famous for it, but mostly we prefer thin. LOL
I don't eat meat, so I have no real input as I'm sure you want to eat meat.

But as I was growing up in Chicagoland, I did and I have to admit, I do miss a good Italian Beef on a chewy Italian roll. We live in Portland now, and a pizza place opened up down the street that serves Chicago-style thin crust (as well as those Italian Beefs!). Best pizza in Portland, in my opinion!

Head to Siena Tavern on Kinzie and Dearborn. It's Fabio Viviani's restaurant (from Top Chef) and it's one of the best meals I've had in a long time! We even got lucky enough to meet him and get a picture. HUB51 had great food and even better margarita's. I've also heard rave reviews about Fig and Olive.

Definitely Italian beef or a combo. Man what I wouldn't give for portillos. You might get your wish. Rumor has it that Dick Portillo is selling the chain for one billion dollars. With a "B". Which means expansion. link
If not, they have a thriving mail order business. (They don't make the best Italian beef in Chicago, but they made the best move ever by putting one of their stores smack dab in the tourist restaurant section of town. I had to blink twice when I started reading Portillo's recommendations on Chicago travel threads at the Bucket.) OP, there's some great ethnic food in Chicago. Dim sum in Chinatown...Italian on Taylor Street...Mexican in Pilsen...Greek in Greektown...Swedish in Andersonville...Vietnamese in Uptown...Indian on Devon...Ethiopian and Kosher in Rogers Park. Filipino...Thai...Korean...Polish...

Make mine with spicy "juice." Note to those ordering: If you don't specify, your Italian beef sandwich will be presented sopping wet. If you prefer not to wring it out, order it "easy juicy."

If you have time, food walking tours are great. DH raved about Topo Gigio's and always goes to a steakhouse at least once when he is there. Go for a drink at the Signature Lounge on the 96th floor of the Hancock Tower. More fun than the observatory, less expensive and you bypass the line.

honestly, I would skip all the stereotypical 'Chicago' food and focus on some good restaurants. There are some really great options.
As mentioned above, Topo Gigios/Frontera Grill is definitely worth checking out - TG is more expensive and takes reservations, Frontera is slightly less fancy and does not take reservations. They are next door to each other and share a kitchen.

We had a fabulous meal at FG and were told the wait was 45 min, but were seated in less than 15 which was a happy surprise. Topolobampo needed to be reserved a couple of months in advance. Top Gigio is in Old Town and easy walking distance from hotels around the Magnificent Mile. The best meal we had in Chicago was at North Pond and we reserved it months ahead. Chicago is a great food town.

It's Topolobampo not Topo Gigio next to the Frontera. Any place owned by Rick Bayless is fabulous. Even his "fast food" places are outstanding.
I also highly recommend Athena's in Greek Town if you want to try Greek Food. The Purple Pig on Michigan Avenue is another absolutely fabulous spot. Russian Tea Time on Adams near the Art Institute is another unique experience or The Italian Village.

bc2ac and ChicagoKaren are right. I was thinking about Frontera, read Topo Gigio and brain farted. Topo Gigio is also good.
Really, I only had one glass of wine tonight, I swear.

I had to look it up I ate at FG and DH ate at Topo Gigio (different trips), so I knew they weren't connected but couldn't remember what the name of the other Rick Bayless restaurant was.

We had to try the deep dish pizza and liked it a lot. We took the leftovers on a 5 hr Amtrak trip and fed them to my St. Louis born and raised husband. In spite of Imo's (the provel covered uber thin crust pizza) he liked it too. I'm glad we tried it because the frozen one at Trader Joe was not good.
