running?
Or, are you skeered of it? (thinking of that episode of Rosanne, remember -- the Halloween one?)

I poke things in with the nearest utensil.

I have a healthy fear of that sucker, so if it can't be pushed in with a spray of water or a wooden spoon that I have just for the garage disposal, I wait until it's turned off.

I like the wooden spoon for that. I HATE it when a metal spoon gets caught up in the disposal! TERRIBLE sound.
But I'm not afraid to use my hand.

I'm skeered of it. I'll push things in with the handle of the plastic scrubber thing I have. But not with my hands.

Yes, yes I do I use an IKEA kitchen brush to push stuff down ... I could never live without a garbage disposal ... when we go on vacation I complain daily about scraping food into the garbage and how stinky it gets

No way. I hate when I drop small spoons down there and have to dig them out.

Dish brush only. I fear it turning itself on (by gremlins) if I used my hand. LOL!

Nope. I won't have my hands any where near a running disposal. I find them terrifying.

I hate them those noisy, scary things. We don't even have one. So I definitely wouldn't be pushing anything into one with my hand.

Sure do, but I have this weird habit of staring at the switch on the wall if I have to stick my hand down inside to retrieve something, as if I'm willing it to not automatically turn itself on in some freakish Final Destination kind of way.

I push things down, but I'm careful to never put my hand farther than is safe. I don't get anywhere near the blades.
If you want to freak yourself out about garbage disposals, watch the last scene of the first season of Orphan Black. You'll never see garbage disposals the same way again. *shudder*

Please use a wood spoon everyone. I don't want anyone to have a new nickname of stumpy.

I haven't had a garbage disposal for about 5 years. Thought I'd miss it, but I don't. If I still had one, I'd definitely use a wooden spoon or spray of water to get things down the drain...not my hand. I don't miss the sound of those lost utensils getting the run around in there, either!

I also push with a utensil. One of my fears is having my hand ground up!

The only thing I use to push stuff down the disposal is running water. I don't use a utensil of any sort, but especially my hand, if it is on. In fact, the switch for the disposal is inside a cabinet door. If I need to put my hand in there, I close the cabinet door and lean my body against it so it can't possibly be opened and then I stick my hand in there. And get it out as fast as I can. I love having it, but I'm a touch scared of it too.

I hate putting my hand down the garbage disposal...It's only a last resort when it's turned off. I'm really paranoid about getting my fingers cut off in there. My grandparents were the only people I knew of with a disposal when I was growing up and I got told on many, many occasions not to put my hand in it.

I actually thought you were supposed to use it that way. I would never use my hand though.

No. The stitch is like a foot away -- I can manage to turn I to and off.
My disposal is temperamental and we have a compost bin, though, so not much goes down there in the first place.

No but not because I'm scared of it. I'm just creeped out about putting my hand in the guck I'm trying to push down the disposer.

I put things down there with my hand or a utensil if there's one already in the sink. I'm not afraid!

No way is my hand getting anywhere near it much less in it! I usually use the sprayer on the kitchen sink. If that doesn't work, I will flip off the switch push it down with a kitchen utensil of some sort and the turn the disposal back on.

I use water or a utensil too, it is partially the fear of the disposal, but it also the fear of touching the food once it has left its dish and had water poured on it. YUCK!!!!!
