I need some help thinking of a graduation gift for my son. What did you do for your son? Something practical? Something sentimental? Something for school?

We bought him a new laptop and will do the same for my daughter. Did he already have one? DS has one - though its probably 3 years old and works great still. Not a Mac though...cant decide if he should just use this old one or upgrade him to Mac. If you ask him, he doesnt care if its Mac or not. SaveSave

My son is only a freshman. But I am already saving for his graduation gift. He is a gamer and he prefers a high quality desktop. I am saving a little bit each week so I can get him the best desktop computer I can find with all the bells and whistles.

He had one, but it was quite old and he is majoring in computer science so he really did need an upgraded one. He definitely wanted a Mac. My dd is graduating in June and her laptop broke in January and could not be repaired. We bought her one, but she knows that it's an early graduation present.

Every holiday he has asked for money so he could save and buy a top of the line gaming computer. He turns 16 in April - and he is still short some of the $$ - but we are going to go ahead and surprise him. He has been saving every penny for what seems like forever. SaveSave

I cannot wait to be able to buy him the best straight out of the gate.

Are we talking high school graduation or college? If he's graduating high school and will be attending college, then depending on his major, I would go with a good laptop with an excellent warranty plan.

My oldest is graduating high school. We're going to London and Paris this summer as part of his graduation present. He is a huge Doctor Who and Harry Potter fan, so we are touring those sights like crazy.
I think a new laptop is a great gift if they are in need of an upgrade.

I gave him a Visa gift card for $500 to do whatever he liked with. He seemed to enjoy it.

When my son graduated from college we gave him $1000 with a card that said - hope this helps take you where you want to go.
When he graduated from high school I gave him a gift card and he went clothes shopping right after we went out to dinner.
I thought about something sentimental he could keep forever, but he likes what he likes and money fits everything.

We bought a six week family trip through Asia so we could all spend time without electronics and distractions as a family. Best gift ever! He loved it and we have wonderful memories.

I actually was thinking of same thing when mine graduates. He'd definately LOVE it. He was also talking about building or putting together one, so I may just wait and go shopping with him so he can pick and choose. I'll give him a homemade gift card or something like that.

My parents gave me a trip to Mexico with a lot of my graduating class. No way in HELL am I gifting my daughter a trip out of the country. I had just turned 18 two weeks prior and I cringe when I think about how irresponsible I was on that trip. My daughter won't even be 18 when she graduates from high school. I don't know what we will do for her, but it won't be that. Melissa

we bought DS a nice hardcover dictionary and thesaurus for high school graduation (2010) and plan to do the same for the girls (2018, 2025) - I still have the ones I got for high school graduation and they've been well-used over the years both by myself and by the kids.
[but we're a nerdy/geeky family]

My older three sons are all watch lovers. They always really appreciate a new high-end watch to add to their collection.
I also like a really nice Montblanc pen for a young man starting out -- although that's better for a college grad than high school.
I guess I tend towards keeper-type gifts. Something they'll have for a lifetime.

I plan on getting him a laptop and the anti theft cord thing plus something fun or cash.
We don't often do trips as presents because I feel it is for the whole family, so it isn't really a gift unless the person has specifically asked for it.
One year we gifted college world series tickets and that was the gift, but the trip was for everybody.
