Coming to a Whole Foods Near You! Rip Esselstyn will present a lecture to promote his new book "The Engine 2 Seven Day Rescue Diet:Eat Plants, Lose Weight, Save Your Health". Rip is the son of surgeon Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn who is one of the early promoters of the whole foods plant based diet in the prevention and reversal of heart disease and diabetes, and is featured prominently in the film "Forks over Knives".
3 years ago when I began my whole foods, plant based diet I first watched "Forks over Knives" and then saw Rip lecture at my local Whole Foods. It was just the encouragement I needed to really get me going! He is a great speaker! Full of enthusiasm and a wonderful educator. About what is wrong with the typical American diet (and what we've believed is healthy all of our lives) and what we can eat to fix our health. It was such fun hearing him speak. Plus they had samples of his recipes to pass around to try the food and that was great too.
He was generous with his time afterwards, and spent time talking with people, signing books and taking photos. This time (he's getting more famous) you have to register for free tickets in advance! I registered last night and some dates are already sold out. His books follow the "Forks over Knives" theory-they are the same thing-whole foods, plant based eating, but his recipes are more spicy because he spent time living in Texas being a firefighter. Before that he was a triathlete.
If you are tired of counting calories, losing weight just to gain it back, not happy with your body, looking for an answer to permanent weight loss, or even just curious about feeling better think about giving up 2 hours of an evening and give this lecture a try. If nothing else you get a little education. You don't have to try the diet for 7 days. Just come out and hear what he has to say. I promise you it'll be a fun evening.

I can't tell you how much I admire your commitment to this way of eating. I always end up falling off the wagon. Right now I'm back on the wagon and feeling great, but it's just a question of time before I fold.

This sounds very interesting. There's a Whole Foods just three miles from me so I'll check to see if he's scheduled to be there. I'd love to understand this way of eating and actually implement it!

Nice. Sitting here eating my 18 cent Ramen from Walmart. (My guilty pleasure.) I know I need to eat better.

I can't tell you how much I admire your commitment to this way of eating. I always end up falling off the wagon. Right now I'm back on the wagon and feeling great, but it's just a question of time before I fold. Aw thanks Z*G. To me it's easy peasy at this point. Once I got pass the first month of staying 100% strict with myself the cravings stopped, and once I got pass the first 6 months they were locked in. My tastes really changed and I no longer craved the old foods. I will say cheese was the hardest. I had no clue cheese was so addictive and so horrible for you. Just last week I got an email about a new book called "The Cheese Trap: How Breaking A Surprising Addiction Will Help You Lose Weight, Gain Energy and Get Healthy" by Neal Barnard. I still miss cheese, but I don't crave it. Now I crave the foods that make up the whole foods plant based diet. Especially black beans, vegetables, fresh fruits. Can't get enough of them. It's just that first 30 days, and then sticking with it that first 6 months. The first six months isn't really that hard. It's just there came a point in time there once or twice when I almost gave up. But I pressed on. Currently there is a wonderful book called "The Forks over Knives Plan" that takes you step by step through the first 30 days-that wasn't out when I did it-I just winged it with the "Forks over Knives Recipe Book. If the plan book had been out when I did it, I'm sure I would have found it much easier going. For those of you planning to go to the lecture I suggest if you haven't already to watch the documentary "Forks over Knives" on Netflix before you attend the lecture. That way you've got a little bit of background information beforehand. That's how I did it, and I think I got more out of it. And Z*G I believe in you. You can do this. If you can go 30 days you can break those cravings.

It really isn't that easy for me...I made it 8 weeks once and it absolutely broke me, I became obsessed with junk food. I went on a three month binge after that.
I keep getting back up after I fall, though! I just finished The End of Dieting by Dr Joel Fuhrman as part of a class assignment. It's helped my resolve somewhat.

Z*G-Do you have a Whole Foods near you? Maybe hearing Rip's lecture will be the just the right push of encouragement and enthusiasm you need right now. And huge kudos to you for getting up again after the fall. That is a big accomplishment. My all time favorite band is Marillion-a British band. One of my favorite lyrics from them is "Failure isn't about falling down, failure is staying down". It's from their song "Rich".
Don't let your 3 month binge with junk food haunt you. That was then, this is now. It's over with. You know what to do. You are in a different place now. Maybe you didn't have all of the right tools for success before. I can tell you that lecture I went to 3 years ago really gave me huge encouragement.
Another book I can recommend to you is "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins. This is a wonderful book that really goes into depth about everything regarding this diet, our health and everything behind it. I checked it out from my library and both DH and I read it cover to cover. It's the most extensive book I've read and did a great job explaining everything in an easy to understand format.
Which class gave you the assignment to read "The End of Dieting" if you don't mind me asking? Sounds like a great class.

birukitty the class is part of my RN to BSN program and it's holistic health promotion. We had a choice of three different books to review. There is a Whole Foods, it's a bit of a trek but I could certainly check it out. I don't shop there often because I'm too cheap, I use Aldi and the local produce markets Thanks for your words of encouragement! I have made a few permanent changes, including drastically cutting back on dairy and refined carbs along with less animal products in general. I really miss eggs and Greek yogurt, though. And the occasional mozzarella.

Z*G I would really encourage you to go to that lecture with Rip. He is so much fun to listen to and is super encouraging. Check on line to see if there are any tickets left and if he is coming to the store near you. Maybe book the tickets anyway, just in case you decide to go before they get all booked up? It might just be the encouragement you need.
That's so interesting about your class. It's very encouraging to me that holistic health is being taught and taken seriously.
I wish you the best!

I also just finished a holistic care of the older adult class. I'm not sure if this is standard in other programs but it's been really interesting and informative.

I eat a completely opposite "diet". My way of eating is about 10-20 carbs a day. I eat a diet heavy in meat/protein and green veggies. No grains, no sodas, no added sugars and no fruit. Strawberries maybe once a month. I feel great, and have lost 54 lbs since the end of July. My point isn't that you are wrong though. My point was about cravings. The first few weeks I craved something awful.. but like you, after that 6 months mark I no longer crave sugars, or breads etc. I can sit between 2 friends at the movies while they eat popcorn and slurp their cokes while I nibble on some almonds and a water. Smells don't bother me even.

I have a WF story to share. Once an author came to share her book at my local WF. There was a facebook event which only 5 people rsvped including me. I stopped by her table for only a few minutes to eat her samples then walked on because no one else where there. A week later in the mail I received her book! I did not leave my address at the event. I gathered that somehow she connected an email I sent to her company with my name at the event. Still she had to remember the faces she saw in the store to connect me to my name. It was a nice surprise but still weird! lol
I only found one event for Rip Esselstyn at a TX whole Foods. I just ordered his book from the library.

Well, I terrible at links but this is the info I wrote down from my local Whole Foods-to register go to www.engine2sevendaychallenge.eventbrite.com Thanks so much Kibblesandbits for pointing out my huge mistake and I mean that sincerely. I used that and was able to find the site to register. If you are interested don't hesitate because as I mentioned many cities were "sold out" already. The lecture is free.

Hubby and I are signed up for one of the ones close to us next month.
I think I finally have DH on board for this WOE. He watched "What the Health" the other night with me and suddenly all the things I've been saying for years clicked for him. He was just shocked at all the information people aren't told (like fat causes diabetes, not sugar), and cheese addiction. We set a date (tomorrow) that our whole house goes WFPB. He surprised me over the weekend when he ordered a veggie burger and added tofu to his salad that we got at Salata for lunch the other day. If you haven't see the movie yet, I highly suggest it. It's by the same film makers who made "Cowspiracy" and it reminded me of a FOK amped up to the max!! Great movie. You can buy it online for about $10.

I have been a vegetarian for probably 40 years and in the last year lost 60 pounds by walking and giving up salt and processed foods. I have absolutely no desire to be vegan (I love my leather handbags, shoes, and cheese too much to give up LOL) but would have gone to hear Zig with a friend who had read his book if he was in the area again.

FOK is a style of eating that is whole foods, plant based. You are almost all of the way there except for the cheese. As far as leather goods go it is up to each of us, but I don't think wfpb eaters are as stringent as vegans about this topic. For me personally I love leather bags too, but nowadays I always buy second hand, for me in my brain that minimizes the damage somehow.

Rip has a video on Netflix, too. He goes to 2 houses and helps redo their diet to his plan.
My husband has done very well on the plan. After 1 1/2 months, his total cholesterol level was 128. It was down over 50 pts from the last time the bloodwork was done. The doctor lowered his cholesterol meds. His BP seems to be dropping too.
As a diabetic, I saw my A1C go from 6.4 to 7.1 and my triglycerides went up. So, I had to add eggs and cheese back to the mix. I have lost 6 pounds, which I haven't been able to do in years. My meds (depo provera and Lyrica) make it nearly impossible to drop weight. 6 pounds is huge for me. I am hoping that I can continue to lose. If I can get my blood glucose back to a normal range, I am hoping to try eliminating the cheese and eggs too.
I do think the culprit with the A1C was the beans we added to our diet. Hummus and homemade 'refried'. Not sure what was going on with the triglycerides. *sigh*

Good for you and how funny that you were thinking of me I love baking sweet potatoes until they are soft and gooey inside and eating them with just a little salt (my doctor told me to salt my food so no worries). I also had asparagus I cook in a dry skillet with a bit of water to keep it from sticking, and a Beast Burger plain (it's a plant based burger made from pea protein).

I'm another who found the switch to plant based to be easy and pleasurable.
I do not crave processed food or animal products. I do, however crave fatty foods if I let myself get hungry. So I work hard to make sure I'm always well fed.
I've never enjoyed food like this in my life. I always had a love/hate relationship with food.
Now I find planning, shopping, preparing, and eating to be a joy. And my stomach doesn't hate me after I eat like it used to.

So glad to hear so many people giving the WFPB a chance in their life. Thought I'd share a recipe I just made that is now one of my favorites. It's a lentil loaf and it's really good. My DS who is 3 is devouring it and some broccoli as we speak!! I put half with ketchup and half with BBQ sauce to see which is better...honestly either is good! Would be good with some steamed potatoes also! Lentil Loaf

I started when I was probably 8 years old because I did not like the taste or texture of meat (my mom was not good at cooking LOL) and am allergic to fish. It doesn't bother me that friends eat meat and several are on Paleo diets, it's just that I don't think it tastes good.

Question for you or other vegans who want to weigh in, what do you do for B12 supplements? Do you do DHA supplements? These things were brought up in the book I reviewed and I got answers there but would like to hear from others. I do plan on eating limited animal products again in the future, but if I ever decide I want to do this long term I'm interested in making sure I don't end up deficient in anything.

I wish I'd given up eating meat as early as you did Have you watched the documentary "Forks over Knives" on Netflix? It's very interesting, educational and isn't dull at all. It will teach you a lot about what dairy does to our bodies. What you do is totally up to you, of course. But for me I like to have the facts, and this is proven medical science based on over a 25 year study. I now know "Milk does a body good" is completely false and is a slogan put our there by the dairy council to sell us their products. I know if I don't consume dairy I have a greater chance of not developing osteoporosis. Yet, we hear over and over the opposite. Well, I won't go on and on. I suggest starting with is documentary and see what you think.

I do not have netflix or any movie channels, I don't watch enough tv to bother with extras.
Over the years scientists have said one thing or another is not good for us. Then years later they say oops, we made a mistake. I don't pay attention any more.

I've never been a fan of meatloaf when I ate meat. I ended up breaking my slice into crumbles and eating it that way. It had a lot of texture due to the veggies and lentils. I take a B12 supplement. I also take DHA currently due to pregnancy and now because I'm nursing my 6 week old DD. Prior to my pregnancy, I didn't take DHA, but I tried to eat chia or flax at least daily. I may continue the DHA after I finish nursing, but I'll have to see. I take a vegan DHA as it's derived directly from algae, instead of getting it from fish (which get it from algae). It's a more direct source of DHA and doesn't contain mercury that some fish carry. Check out a few of these Video clips from a very well researched MD, Dr. Gregor. He gives very informative and well cited discussions about many topics. This is where I got my DHA information for my pregnancy, which coincidently my OB/GYN recommended the same thing.
