I have a family member that went from being vegan to converting over to the Keto Diet (all protein/fat) and has successfully lost all of her excess weight. She didn't have much to start off with, maybe 25lbs. Her husband, previously vegetarian, protested against the diet when she started calling it the 'Atkins hoax' and gave in and has lost 40lbs. She swears it is successful and healthy. The diet is used by children and adults with several health conditions (epilepsy, PCOS, etc) I bought the book 'Keto Clarity' from Amazon tonight with Amazon Prime shipping. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience and/or feedback for me?

Yep, I do it periodically to drop weight and also flatten my stomach. I find I feel a lot better when I don't eat grains, and it's harder to avoid sugar than it is to break up with bread. Worth it though.
And someone's going to mention it - my cholesterol actually went down.

I was diagnosed with Diabetes earlier this year and within three months got my blood sugar levels back to non-Diabetic numbers. I've lost and kept off my excess weight. My cholesterol is excellent, blood pressure is great, too. It also is a really great appetite suppressant. I don't have any problems eating this way, it really suits my lifestyle. My SIL started eating this way and lost 6 lbs. the first week. On occasion I do a "fat fast" but only for one or two days at most.

I have tried to eat like this too as I have uncontrolled epilepsy & it is supposed to help with the seizures. I did not do well on the diet as I am not a big eater & I do not eat meat much at all, chicken, beef, pork or fish. My neuro would love to see me stay on this diet but I don't see that happening.....unless junk food is counted in the diet! I know a lot of mums that use this religiously for their children with epilepsy & they have done very well with it. I don't think that I am disciplined enough also.

I've thought about doing it and I found a blog that is low carb and gluten free but there is a plan for a Keto Diet I breath I'm hungryI don't think this is a realistic way to eat for a long period of time but it might be a good way to kick sugar and carbs and then add back healthy carbs. I am eating a Paleo diet and the weight came off but I am at a standstill and considering this.

I just started a week ago today.
I have not cheated once. But, it is very involved depending on what you follow. I feel full and I'm not wanting to snack. My biggest struggle is planning my meals. This is a lifestyle change for me, and I will not try to fool myself into believing that I can live on salads. I just keep pinning and FB'ing new recipes.
I will add as well, that I have PCOS. I may get 4 periods a year. I had my 3rd one last month. I was expecting my next one closer to October. Like I said I'm sticking to lowering my carbs. I'm not under 25 a day, but I'm massively restricted from what I was. And I got my period this morning. There is something working here. And I'm satisfied, with the food and results, that I want to keep going.

I have PCOS and insulin resistance. I did try the keto diet because I was told that it was the "magic bullet" for people with my condition. I had a bad experience. My blood glucose levels became very erratic and I started to have abnormally low BG readings. My BG crashed hard one afternoon and my doctor said no more keto.
I do great on more moderate lowcarb diets, like the Atkin's maintenance phase, or even a more whole-grain and "slow-carb" based diet. My body just happens to not handle ketosis very well.

conchita do you use the ketostix to check if you are in ketosis? No, I never have felt the need to. I'm very attuned to how my body is functioning and when you're in ketosis there are signs...lack of appetite and rapid weight loss were the two major signs when I first started. I stick to under 30 carbs (complex carbohydrates only) a day now that I have my weight and blood sugar under control. I need to add that I also stuck to a very low calorie intake at first. Diabetes runs in my family and I know how dangerous it can be. I had to get serious about my health and this was the quickest way for me to get back in control of my life. My doctor was amazed by my blood test results and how I turned my glucose levels around in just three months. For me it comes down to having an active and enjoyable life versus potato chips. I choose to live a full life.

Wow, great stories! I am spending my weekend researching more and building grocery and menu lists (I am forever a list-maker!) and I think I will start next weekend when I will have more time at home for the long weekend in case I have bad headaches when I start. Thank you everyone for your help.

Keto=ketosis. Yes, my sister and her DH (and 2 adult sons) have done this and are doing it again. Meaning, you gain the weight back when you go into the final stage. I reviewed it and it's not nearly as healthy as The Dukan Diet. I understand the protein and adding foods at certain stages of the diet, but I do NOT agree with the amount of fat in this fad. It's insane. My DH has done the Dukan Diet and was successful. He lost 68 lbs the first time. It's a slow loss, but for him, it was great. He LOVES meat/protein. The downside is that it's very expensive. When things got financially tough for us, he couldn't keep it up and he gained the weight back.
For him, this is a sound diet if you're able to afford it. He felt satiated and happy + he got off of more than 1/2 of his Rx's! His diabetes was in check, etc. It's amazing. If he were to do the Ketosis diet, I'm sure that his cholesterol levels would be askew.

So it's like most diets that if you stop eating 'diet food' and go back to your original way of eating the weight could come back? With my my next option being a surgical approach, I'd rather take my chances here first. Diet starts this coming weekend! Yay!

So it's like most diets that if you stop eating 'diet food' and go back to your original way of eating the weight could come back? Diets are temporary ways of eating and aren't generally sustainable for the rest of your life - hence yo-yo dieting. This sounds no different.

For me, this isn't a diet fad. It's how I eat. It's how I have to eat to keep my diabetes in control. It wasn't so much about weight loss for me. But it is a great way to jump start your weight loss journey as well as kicking the carb addiction. But you really have to eat to suit your lifestyle and your medical/physical needs. This isn't a one-size-fits-all diet. The most you can do is try it to see if it's something you benefit from and is sustainable. I haven't found it difficult and am not having any adverse affects. My blood tests keep coming back really good and my doctor is very happy with me.
Whatever you do, I hope you're successful in your weight loss goals!

For those of you that eat this way, I'd love to hear what you eat on a daily basis. I just downloaded a Keto-App for my iPad but haven't had a chance to look at it.

I am on day 4. I'm trying to stay around 30 carbs a day. I haven't bought any keto sticks to see if I am in ketosis, but I def feel more energetic, clearer and not as hungry. On the flip side, I'm really suffering from constipation. I'm eating veggies with 2/3 meals and drinking about 96 oz of water a day. Maybe it's just my body adjusting. As far as weight loss goes, as of this morning, I'm down 1.5 lbs. I am close to that time of month, so I might just be retaining water. I was really hoping I'd lose a little more, but I'll stick it & see what happens.

My mom and sister did this diet. My mom lost about 40 pounds over a year ago. I'm guessing she's probably gained back 10 pounds. She travels a lot so that might be part of the reason.
My sister lost 50. She is a couple months now off the diet and I would say has better eating habits overall so I imagine she'll do well post diet.
I've been around them both while they were on the diet and it is pretty strict. I admired both of their efforts while on the diet to stay so focused. I don't think I could do this diet unless is was a group thing and had everybody in my family on board...-and that will never happen. Lol

My husband is on board with me to start eating this way on Saturday. He has better will-power the I do! I do have a 10yr old daughter who will not be eating the same as us so I do have to watch to make sure she is not consuming as much protein and fat as we will be. I can't imagine cutting out the white starchy carbs for her will hurt her in the least. She will still eat carbs at school + fruit at home.

For those who follow a Keto lifestyle this isn't a "diet" My son in law began it initially to lose weight but found that it also helped him control his chronic arthritis without meds. His cholesterol is low, blood sugars are normal. He has changed his way of eating almost two years ago and literally says he doesn't miss his old way of eating. My daughter and several other family members have started this lifestyle change and all are showing positive results with lowered cholesterol, blood pressure, sugars etc.

For those of you that eat this way, I'd love to hear what you eat on a daily basis. I just downloaded a Keto-App for my iPad but haven't had a chance to look at it. This morning I ate scrambled eggs with mushrooms, cheese and leftover steak strips. I use heavy whipping cream in my scrambled eggs and in my coffee. I also cook my eggs in unsalted butter. For lunch I had hard salami with provolone cheese, roasted pecans and mini pickles. Dinner was a taco salad (no taco shell): seasoned ground beef, shredded cheddar, guacamole, sour cream on shredded lettuce. I eat an assortment of nuts but am careful with portion size, various cheeses, avocados, cottage cheese with berries, assorted salad greens, spinach, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, zucchini, okra, green beans, bacon, real butter, assorted oils (olive, coconut, etc...), rib eye steaks, roast beef, turkey, ground beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, tuna, mayonnaise, mustard, lots of pickles (but read the carb count some pickles have no carbs while others do), sugar free jello, apricots, an occasional low carb tortilla, lots of water but especially mineral water and of course, eggs (fried, boiled, scrambled). *I don't keep track of calories, just carbs. To stay in ketosis you should try for 20 or less carbs a day. I'm in what you could consider a "maintenance" phase so I eat up to 30 carbs daily. Again, this isn't a diet, it's how I eat and what works well for my body. If I notice a craving for unhealthy carbs rearing it's head I will do a 1-3 day "fat fast" to get me back on track.

Hubby and I started Wheat Belly over a year ago. I feel better than I ever have and I've dropped 25 lbs and he's lost about 20 but he's not quite as careful about his carbs as I am. I'll never go back to the old way of eating. I don't miss it, we eat much better and overall are healthier. I'm off of my cholesterol meds. I think hubby will be able to get off his BP meds soon. No more migraines or digestive issues for me. Wheat Belly is similar to a Keto diet but we don't specifically measure. It's eating no grains, no sugar and keeping carbs to under 15 grams per meal, no more than 50 per day. I did just pick up the new book Keto Clarity by Jimmy Moore and have started reading that. Not sure if I'll take the extra steps since we're doing so well on Wheat Belly.

Doctors still didn't understand much about PCOS, and just wanted to put me on BC to regulate my periods, which I didn't want. I started the Atkins diet, and soon was having a period every month, so I knew something was working right. I lost 50 lbs., and became pregnant within six months . I still eat fairly low carb/low glycemic today. It's just how my body functions best.
