Some of these look funny but we've had deaths here in New Zealand and there have been health warnings about the dangers. Apparently throwing cold water over the face and head can cause closing of the larynx which slows the heart rate and can cause a person to stop breathing.

Wow, I've never heard of that, anniefb. I know those Polar dips/runs can be dangerous but not just throwing ice water over your head.

I would have never guessed that. I am thankful you shared this with us.

True, but I'm sure none of these people expected to fall in their bathtubs or have metal buckets thrown in their face. You can hurt yourself REALLY BADLY by falling in your bathtub. I'm not a safety freak, but it never occurred to me that something as innocent-seeming as this ice bucket challenge would carry so much potential risk -- a lot of it stupid and unnecessary. Also, the little kids who couldn't lift up the bucket and just fell over were kinda funny.

Is it bad that I laughed? Seriously, that is life. Funny things can occur in the most unassuming moments.

Oh my...but makes sense. I've already had a Facebook friend "challenge" me. Really, I'm 7 months pregnant. Um no... Feel for some of them on the video.

I have a childhood friend who did the challenge on FB and his two sons dumped a cooler of water over his head and the cooler slammed shut on his head. DH did it the other day and I wanted him to stand in the driveway and have DS and nephew dump the water on him from the porch and he said "No way they'll drop the whole bucket on me and knock me out!" Guess he's smarter than I give him credit for lol!

I won't do it because it would hurt me. I have what you could call an "allergy" to cold. I get hives, swelling, and severe muscle cramping. It was discovered when I was 12 and jumped into a spring-fed lake and ended up almost not being able to breathe.
So, yeah, NO, I won't be doing this challenge.

I got distracted by the story on the right hand side...Robert Pattinson did the ice bucket challenge.

I just saw on the news tonight that there was a group of guys ( students, athletes or something) who asked the fire dept to do it with their hoses & one of the hose got caught in the electric wire & the firemen are in the hospital with life threataninging injuries

Dald222, That's in my state. The band at Campbellsville University asked the fire department to help them with their challenge. The firemen used a ladder truck to spray them. As they were lowering the ladder with 2 men on it, it came too near an electrical wire, the wire "arced" and the two men on the ladder were critically injured. One is still in critical condition in the burn unit, the younger one is doing better. The 2 firemen on the lower part of the truck were slightly injured as well, but were treated and released from the hospital.

Annie FB, my DH has that condition or whatever it is. Completely unable to breath if dashed with cold water. Do you know if there is a name for it or what 'treatment' might help if it should ever happen?

Really sad and the whole town was without electric most of the day too because of it

Just heard on radio a little while ago that their conditions had been updated. One to critical and one to fair.

My husband is one of those who, when cold water is thrown on him, could (and prob would) stop breathing due to his heart issues. There are so many other ways to donate. This one is stupid, IMO, unless you know you're in good health.
