Iowa is considering an anti abortion bill that, among other things, would give parents rights over the bodies of their unmarried adult daughters (not just minor daughters, it gives parents injunctive relief over minor OR unmarried). Iowa Dems have pointed out that little nugget of info on Twitter. I can't fathom how anyone could see how that is right, regardless of your stance on abortion. Article

Well, if the woman hasn't been safely transferred to a husband, she needs to have *some* man making decisions for her, doesn't she?

Well there really some Christians (some, obviously not most) here in the U.S. who truly believe that any unmarried women should be under her father's headship. Living at home, not working etc, no matter their age. I can't imagine living like that.

WTAF? Honestly, every day I feel like the conservatives in government are trying to time warp us straight back to 1950. It's crazy that stuff like this even makes it to the bill stage without some sane person shutting it down first. Their reps are completely cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs! I hope the women of Iowa wake the hell up and vote in droves in 2018, while they still have the chance. Next thing you know, some genius will think rolling back the voting rights of women is a good idea too.

I saw that, but just the fact that someone thought it was a good enough idea to even float it out there says a lot about how these folks think.

Not because he is super religious, but because he is a possessive control freak asshole who can't stand seeing his grown daughter make decisions for HER OWN life. I wonder if these people are just control freaks hiding under the guise of religion?

Sigh. Iowa was surprisingly progressive, for a time. Very disappointing.

The problem with this line of thinking is that it is 2017 and the majority of American households don't come in neat little packages with a mom, dad and 2.5 kids.

Sigh. Iowa was surprisingly progressive, for a time. Very disappointing. I have a niece that lives there. She married into a very religious, conservative family and attends a church that espouses the belief that the man is the total head of the household and all that. I could see her voting that way, and she's an otherwise intelligent, college educated RN who easily out earns her DH. Some of the blogs and stuff she pins on Pinterest seriously leave me scratching my head. I honestly don't know how we got here.

What YEAR are we in, again?! What the ever loving fuck, America?! 1760? In 1760, abortion wasn't illegal, at least before quickening. We can't even use that as cover.
