LOL
I bought a new MacBook Pro (15 inch) as my other one is about 10 years old and had some minor issues. They had a promotion going on--$100 GC and I got my teacher discount on the laptop along with Applecare. I used the GC on the Applecare.
Anyhow, a friend is in need of a laptop and I would gift her my old one to use until she can buy a new one. How do I restore it (?) or rather clear all the histories (e.g.. Downloads) etc?? I know how to remove stuff I have saved but am wondering how to just wipe it clean??
Also...this new one doesn't have a CD/DVD drive which is fine BUT I have the CD for the MacOffice (word etc) and I don't have an external CD drive...is there a download anywhere for those programs or should I just get an external drive??
TIA

I've never gifted an old computer to anyone. You could try to Google it and see what you find out.
Office......try their site and see if you can download from there. If you have other disks then you may want an external. Nowadays most things are just a download so I don't know how much you'd use it.

I would get a external hard drive. You can never have to many sources of backup. Don't ask me why I feel that way. I am not sure what operating system you have on your older Mac, but if it is a newer version, you can go into Applications>Utilities>Disk First Aide. You should be able to erase the hard drive there, but you will need to have an operating system to reload onto the computer. If you google how to do it, you should get a lot of websites that pop up.

I haven't gifted an old laptop to anyone except my mother. For her, I just cleared all the temp files, histories, etc. But I'm sure there's a way to do more without completely wiping the computer and starting from scratch, which would be a total pain. I'd definitely google it or ask on one of the mac boards. As for the software, as long as you have your product IDs (which are usually on the jewel cases), you can probably download a 30-day trial from the Microsoft site and then put the codes in there. If that doesn't work, you can call them. I've had to call MS on a couple occasions and it was actually a more pleasant experience than I'd expected. I just got a 15" MacBook Pro Retina in March and I it. Wasn't too happy when DH accidentally spilled a bottle of water on it this weekend. The Apple store sent it out to be fixed and it's slightly less than a new one, but still... OUCH. Not having a CD/DVD drive isn't a huge deal, as most software these days can just be downloaded, but it is nice to have. DH bought this one, and it's worked great. Cheap, too. Enjoy the new toy!!

Not a Mac person, but the last time I had to clear the history and temp files on one I Googled it. I think there are utilities for that as well. External CD/DVD ROM drives don't cost a lot, but the other alternative is to network out the drive on a machine that does have a CD Drive and load it onto your new computer that way. If you do try to download a copy and use your existing key, the versions have to match exactly or it won't work. Or you could see if the folks at an Apple store will help you out and get that loaded onto your system. Since most software is downloadable these days, buying an external drive could end up being a one-use thing.
Have fun with your new MacBook Pro, those are really nice!
