Do you ever get earaches during the night? For me, it happens on both sides, and quite often. I'm assuming it's caused by my pillow, just not sure why. I have had a couple of different kids, and it happened with both. The only way I have found to prevent it is sleeping on my hand, separating my ear from my pillow.
Any ideas why this is happening, and how to prevent it in the future?

Yes I do get them often! Usually when I have spent too much time on one side. Unfortunately I don't have any solutions beyond switching sides in the night. Obviously that's difficult to think about when you're asleep!

OMG I thought it was just me. I hate that. It happens more often on my right ear, and I do sleep on both sides, but prefer my right side. Very annoying.

Omg this has been me for a couple weeks. I thought I was getting sick but it only ever amounted to an earache and it goes away during the day. Weird. And why??

I've just decided I"m getting old. I swear if my back isn't hurting then my ear is, or one of my legs have started to get tingly. If I lay on my back I snore, if I lay on my stomach I'm smooshing my boobs and giving myself wrinkles or something. Not sure I can handle another 40, 50, maybe more years of this crap

Wow, I thought I was weird!! It has only started happening in the last couple of years. I have also have resorted to putting my hand between my ear and the pillow. I figured I was sleeping pressing really hard on the pillow. Glad to know I'm not alone.

I turn 44 in June, and I have noticed a lot of changes, including pillow earaches, and my vision getting blurry. I also workout every day, now, and that seems to make all of my aches and pains worse. UGH

Yes this happens with my very firm snoogle pillow. It doesn't happen with my soft regular pillow, but it might be the way the snoogle positions you to sleep.

I had that for years, but only on the right side. I used to sleep with a cotton ball in my ear because that somehow prevented it. When I got my MyPillow, it stopped; I guess the foam inside conforms more to my ear.

I searched on Amazon and found pillows with a hole for the ear, as this was happening to me. I have a memory foam pillow so we cut a hole for my ear. It has helped immensely. Crazy the stuff that occurs as we get older.

This is the reason I sleep on a buckwheat pillow. I use my hand to make an indentation in the pillow, and put my ear there. No more earaches. Before I got the pillow, I, too, put my hand there

My ear would hurt for hours on end when I would wake up in the night. Trying to use the phone during the day hurt like crazy. Touching my ear hurt like crazy. Does this only happen after age 40? I don't remember it being a thing for most of my life until relatively recently. It's weird.

I am not alone!!! My DH just laughs and thinks I am odd. It has only been the last year or so. (I am 42) I started to sleep with my head in my hand. But then I wake up with a big red hand print. It looks like o was slapped!

Are you laying on your hand under your ear? I know if I keep my hand actually touching my ear, as opposed to under my pillow, I wake up with a really sore ear!

Sleeping with my head raised, and/or on my back plus allergy medicine made them go away.

I also workout every day, now, and that seems to make all of my aches and pains worse. UGH I got a gym membership for Christmas and I was hoping that by working out 3 times a week I would strengthen my body enough that my aches and pains would disappear. It hasn't worked. And the fact that I still have aches and pains has only served to make me *certain* that I have bone cancer or something. I mean, it can't be age that makes me ache, so it's gotta be something more serious right?!?! ETA: Oh, and yes I get ear aches in the morning, along with my pain in my right hip. I have to try and sleep on my left side more because my right side is crumbling.

I have this happen, probably a couple of times a month. It's the cartilage of my ear that hurts, and it can be pretty darn painful, enough to wake me out of a deep sleep. I have no idea why it happens, why it only happens sometimes, or how to prevent it. Like you, once it's there I put my hand between my ear and the pillow. I've noticed that it may happen on both sides at once, and I can't fall asleep on my back or front, so it's truly a PITA!

Well I'm 54, and it doesn't get any better! I too only recall this problem over the last few years.
Other newer pains include bad pain in my hips which also wakes me from deep sleep. Pretty sure it's bursitis, right over the joint. I wake up and have to switch sides, but often both sides hurt. No wonder I'm so tired all the time!
I also have "sticky" hip joints, so from time to time I get stuck in a certain seated position. I just can't move. And it hurts like a SOB! I just hope it happens when someone is nearby so they can haul me up to my feet.
And a couple of times a year my back goes out. I bend over or bend forward and get stuck. I can't move without terrible pain, can't stand upright even with pain. Again I just have to hope it happens when someone is nearby to help me crawl to my bed. I can't take anti-inflammatories, so I just rest and ice it for a day or so.
The rate I'm going, if I live 20 more years I won't be able to move at all!

Is it the actual outer portion of the year – like the cartilage that hurts? Or is it an inner ear ache? Because for the past few years, I have had a problem with copious amounts of ear wax. When the wax buildup gets bad enough, it plugs in my ears up at night (whichever side I'm lying on) and when I flip over, fixes that year, but plugs the other one. When I stand up during the day, the wax all drains back down and my ears are no longer clogged. About once a year, I get my ears cleaned out at the doctors office – it's like a spa treatment for me! The weirdest things happen when you grow old…

Do you mean the outside of your ear? I get that if I sleep funny, it's so painful to lift my ear off the pillow and hurts for hours afterwards. I've had that since I was a child, I don't see it as anything to do with aging at all.

I suffer too! Apparently it's called Chondrodermatitis Nodularis and it flippen hurts doesn't it. I often put a corn plaster on my ear so that the hole is over the sore bit. But I have had to resort to getting a bath sponge, cutting a hole in it for my whole ear to fit in and securing it to my head with elastic when it's got really bad. I have found that memory foam pillows are the worst for me, I think they're too hard to sleep on and make my ear worse.

Knowing my luck, I would forget it was there if the postman woke me up, and I would never be able to answer the door to him ever again!
