How do you handle the smell in the house afterwards? It is gross all day long no matter how much air refreshener I spray. I love the olive oil and broccoli recipe and it is so healthy, but dang, I just can't take the smell. And my poor husband cringes when he walks in the door. How do y'all handle it? Do you just put up with the smell when you cook it or do you have tips to get rid of it?

pour some vinegar in a bowl when you are roasting it.. That will absorb the smell. Throw away when you are done.

A friend told me that if you burn a vanilla scented candle while you cook there won't be any lingering food smells. I tried it once and it seemed to work, but you become noseblind to smells, soooo there's that!

I'm so glad that others have this sensory complaint! I hate food smells in general if they linger after a meal. Brussels sprouts are terrible, as well. pour some vinegar in a bowl when you are roasting it.. That will absorb the smell. Throw away when you are done. For the vinegar suggestion, are you saying just have it out in a bowl on your countertop?

When I cook stinky stuff I always open all the windows and doors and leave them open for a while after I finish. I also turn on fans if it is some thing really stinky. My doors and windows are mostly open all day anyway.

I tried this twice. The first time it really seemed to help and the odor was gone in a couple of hours. I was so excited that I thought I had the answer. The second time it did not seem to help at all. I'm not sure what the difference was. Maybe I had more garlic in the second batch. I will definitely keep it running though just for an added measure. Scorpeao, thanks for the suggestion. I will have to pick up a vanilla candle next time I go to the mall! Sharlag, I agree that brussel sprouts are just as bad. If it was just an hour or two smell, I could deal with it, but both of these veggies have odors that last all day long and into the night. Yuck!!!

I open the windows, turn on the fan & I've been known to run the air with the windows open to circulate the air out quicker. Then after I've cleaned up, i spray lysol lol. Basically open the windows!

huh. I notice the smell when it's cooking and for a bit afterward but never for hours and hours or into the night. Maybe your family is post-broccoli farting and that's what you smell? It's possible....

If I chop an onion in the kitchen with the fan on and the windows open she is crying in her room. The vinegar helps a lot with that. She still can't be in the kitchen but she can be in her room.

It's possible.... LOL!! I promise it is the cooking smell. I am surprised you don't have the same issue. I usually cook it first thing in the morning to give it all day to clear out, but you can still clearly smell it at night. My family won't touch it because of the smell.

I have a small saucepan with water, cinnamon sticks and cloves simmering when I make stinky stuff as well as the fan above the stove and the ceiling fan going. Sometimes have a window open as well.

I have the same problem with cooking smells. I live in a climate where it is not always conducive to keeping doors or windows open. I will have to try the vinegar trick.
