Funnel cake with powdered sugar will always be my favorite, but fried apple dumplings (whole granny smith apple, cored & filled with cinnamon sugar mixture, then wrapped in batter and fried, served with vanilla ice cream) are a close second. I've tried to make both of these at home, and it was an utter failure on both counts.

Deep fried OREOS! Fab. U. Lous!! They are awesome!!!! That's my second favorite thing at the fair right behind corn dogs. I think they put crack in corn dogs to make them so delicious.

Your culture (American) eats some interesting things at fairs. We have falafals, and gyros and maybe a langos (like a pizza dough deep friend golden and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar/salt) it is pretty awesome. I love eating them there. Our fair has a Jewish cart with kosher pickles and hotdogs. Other than that our fair food is pretty healthy...(read:boring)
If someone can tell me what the CNE is like or other fairs across Canada I will stand corrected. Ours just aren't that special when it comes to once a year food.

Not a fair, but a festival. The senior class of the local high school sells hot apple dumplings, along with a scoop of really good vanilla ice cream, and then the drizzle fresh, pure maple syrup over it. OMG. I could go to the festival just for one of those dumplings. Not exactly Fair food, but I had a homemade apple dumpling with cinnamon flavored ice cream at a crafts festival at Silver Dollar City in Branson. This was about 15 years ago. My sis and I still say it was the best dessert item either of us has ever eaten....oh my! Local church ladies had awesome peach fried pies at our county fair one year.

Just went to a festival and for the first time, saw the offering for fried gummy bears.
Um. just no. But apparently, via Facebook, many thought completely yummy.

Deep fried cheese on a stick. (It's in corn dog batter, and the center is super soft and melty.) One year, I think my sister ate like 6 of them. That sounds amazing. I don't go to fairs often, but I will be looking for that next time I do! I am torn between funnel cake & kettle corn - the good stuff actually homemade in a kettle. Not the grocery store version.

At our Fair (WA state), it's all about the scones with butter and raspberry jam. Yum!!

Ours just aren't that special when it comes to once a year food. Here we call Langos elephant ears. They are delicious! I agree about our fairs have interesting food, it seems like every year there is something new and deep fried! We saw a booth advertising deep fried coke and ordered it, but they were sold out. Can you get gyros and falafels locally? Most of our fair food is stuff you can't really get except at the fair. They do have burgers and chicken strips, but most of the food is deep fried.

Deep fried Oreos are my favorite. They even taste good cold the next day though hot wins hands down. Our fair also sells a crazy burger which is a hamburg w bacon served on a honey dip donut. The sweet is amazing. Never thought it would be that good. I usually just share one w my SO. Nothing for everyday though my son asks for one now and then,

I had no idea that when I moved fair food differ from areas. Back home in Texas I loved shrimp on a stick...fried alligator....crawfish etouffee...and gumbo.
My new state is lacking in the fair food when I went. Although I do like the fires with vinegar which is new to me.

Crawfish Bisque Bread Bowl at the yearly Christmas craft show in Covington, Louisiana (my home town). It's cheesy crawfish bisque poured into a hollowed out, huge, crusty bread bowl. I get one every time I'm there. That thing is delicious. It's also probably 2000 calories.

Fried dough is always my favorite!
I would like to try a deep friend snickers or oreo, both sound like they're good!
The state fair opened here today and we're going next Wednesday! I cannot wait!

I never go to the fairs around here. It is just too hot for me when they go on and too many people. But we go to the Garlic festival in North plains Oregon every year. My daughters grandma and the American legions have a garlic roasted corn booth and we volunteer there every year. I found that I love the corn but My favorite food to eat is the garlic mashed potatoes and Chicken that the booth next to ours has.
They have elephant ears that my daughter loves. they are ok but too much sweet for me. if they were have the size they would be better.

MN State Fair opened today and it is my most favorite thing to do!! I love the deep fried "gourmet" pickles-two pickle slices with cream cheese in the middle, battered and then deep fried with a side of ranch. The Turkey to Go stand is a local eatery as well and their shredded turkey sandwich is heaven! You can even get cranberries and brie on top. Drooling now... Mini doughnuts are a family must while my husband and Dad love the Key Lime Pie Bar on a stick. Maybe I might try the deep fried Oreo this year since it has high marks here Deep fried Cheese Curds, mmmmmmm. And at some point in the day we stop and have an apple. Yes, an apple. Gotta have something healthy that day, lol!

The reason to go to some of these fairs or festivals is for the funnel cake. I don't bother trying anything else I LOVE funnel Cake. Last year we took my granddaughter to a local parade and they have a lot of booths set up. She was about two. First time she ever had funnel cake and I am pretty sure the girl ate at least half of it lol. She doesn't like sweets much but she LOVED that. I am on a diet and now I want Funnel Cake

The Alaska State Fair starts today!!! I am always curious about what new food booths there will be. A few of our favorites are:
Pork Chop on a Stick Corn on the cob The cream puffs (with chocolate and berries!) Rae's Tamales (so so good) Hoop and Hula Cookies (delish and support good causes) And of course a funnel cake or elephant ear!
Hope you find something wonderful when you go!
