Might be fun to have a spot to compare travel plans and pix after. DH is determined we'll go somewhere to watch, but I hear destinations are booking up quickly that weekend. "On Aug. 21, a total solar eclipse will be visible from the contiguous United States for the first time since 1979. Sky watchers in North America and Hawaii will be able to see at least a partial solar eclipse on that summer day, but most people will have to travel to see the sun completely eclipsed by the moon. If you're considering making a trip to see the total solar eclipse, here's a guide to which states and cities fall inside the path. And remember that a trip to see the eclipse could also include stops at a few local attractions." www.space.com/35495-where-to-see-2017-total-solar-eclipse.html

I live in the path of totality so I won't be traveling. My parent's home town is just down the road (very close to the center) and is having a cute little small town eclipse festival. Five days of family fun! we'll probably spend some time with that and then my sister is hosting a family eclipse party for the day of. DH's band has two gigs that weekend both paying triple what he usually gets.
If you haven't made reservations yet, jump on it now! If you are coming to Idaho or Oregon you may not even get a hotel room. Some places in the region even canceled all their reservations and raised prices (double or triple usual rates.) Good luck!

We've had reservations for maybe 10 months. Somewhere in Oregon and everything was almost booked up at that point. Can't wait!

My daughter lives just south of the path in South Carolina. We plan on being there and pray it's a clear day!

We booked a vacation rental in Lincoln City, Oregon for the eclipse about 8 months ago. It will be our first vacation with our new baby--she'll be 3 months old. It is about a 4-5 hour drive for us (we live in Seattle).
My sisters live in Central Oregon, and they are looking at booking their houses out through AirBnB, or just booking campers (they each have several acres of property). There are massive festivals planned and this will be a huge money-maker for their little communities. The size of one town (Madras, Oregon) is expected to more than double with visitors during the week around the eclipse!

My sister lives very close to one of the places where the total eclipse will happen and she would love to have us come visit. The only problem with traveling there for it is that she lives 15 hours away and school starts the following week. It would probably be better to stay home and help our kid get back on track for going to bed on time for school.

I've just booked two nights in Cookeville, TN to view. I have family in the area as well, so I may or may not need the hotel but wanted to nail one down just in case.

We booked in KT about 2 years ago. DH is nuts about astronomy so this has been on his radar for a while. Need to look if there are any festivities planned where we re going

If I had a little more vacation time left, I would do a white water rafting trip that stops for the eclipse. Alas, that isn't in the cards - I'm hoarding my few remaining days (after a big vacation - don't let me sound too pitiful) for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A teacher friend of mine and her family will be in Montana. She said it's costing over $6K for the WEEKEND for the 3 of them! No thanks! I'll stay home and watch it on TV.

Only a tiny, dangling bit of Montana forest will have totality. We're about 4 hours from Casper, which is in the path and is apparently booked solid. They've had international inquiries at the airport about jet parking space! I saw the eclipse in college in 1979 which was nearly total there. It was eerie; got dark, the birds stopped singing. I'm good. ETA a link to the map with the path of totality

lordamercy maybe we have the same family. My sister lives there - I've been there a couple of times. Is there something interesting there to do? The two times I've been there I've been thoroughly unimpressed.

Cookeville has grown tremendously since the first time I went there, shortly after we got married. I think Cummins Falls is nearby and it might actually be in a state park. It is definitely a slower pace than what we are used to!

We're right in the path (Oregon) and campsites and hotels have been booked for months...the state has just released/opened more campsites for the viewing. I honestly didn't know it was such a big deal for people to travel to see the eclipse...but this is going to be so cool!

My parents are a 1.5 hour drive from totality in Nebraska and I tried to plan our visit home to coincide with the eclipse, but it just didn't work out. So will miss out. Boo!

we took a cruise ship in australia that was on the great barrier reef for the total eclipse.. those onshore saw nothing.. there were at least 300 hard core eclipse watchers on board .. and everyone was out watching at 5:30 am in 25 mph wind to see it. it was worth it.

Another Oregonian here . . . we live 45 minutes to the south of the totality line and will be camping in our RV somewhere a little more east to avoid the crowds in Madras and along Hwy 97. We are looking forward to it! I purchased our Eclipse viewing glasses from Amazon and they arrived this week. Thought I should order them before they weren't available. Now I have 25 paper glasses that I can share with family and friends!

If I'm off work, I think the kids and I will leave very early in the morning and drive down to Oregon (I'm sure the traffic will be heavy no matter what). Even if we only sit beside the freeway or in a Walmart parking lot, it should still be a good show.
