It is blocked in China and I am missing my friends and "stuff" going on. Does anyone know what's happening on Facebook right now? I just need a few details about stories circulating. I belong to lots of planner groups, designer purse groups, and just about anything else under the sun. Are there any good marathons being run? Is there any new gossip? Did Prince Harry get engaged to Megan Markle? Did Mariah Carey flub a lip sync again? Anything. I need some details here please. I can't just google it myself as google is blocked as is Gmail.

Google, western based social media, youtube and about any other thing you can think of is blocked (MSN is probably also blocked) China has its own form of all those media types just controlled by the Chinese government. Sorry Elannah, I don't keep up with pop culture so I can't help you with headlines and celebrity news but I don't think Prince Harry has announced an engagement yet. |

Thanks that was great. For what it's worth I did get a whole week's worth of Michaels coupons come through on Gmail today. I didn't get an important message from someone but I did get to know there was a 55% off coupon this week. Also Fitbit has a few new bands for my pedometer. Again more Gmail information.
One thing i have learned is that I do speak pretty good Chinese and am able to make myself understood quite well and get whatever I need. Not sure when I will be back here ever again, but it's good to put that university degree to good use, right?

Did you see about the elementary school shooting in California? That was sad. One teacher and one student died. The shooter was the teacher's estranged husband.
That's all I got.. oh yeah and Survivor has been crazy.. if you ever watched that show...lol

Those who graduated high school in the early 80s might remember the J Geils Band and will probably remember their Love Stinks and Freeze Frame albums. Yup. I think they said he was 74 years old. When they played some of the songs I was surprised at how many I loved back then. So danceable when I was young enough to dance that way.
Elannah, if you can select your silk and have your clothes made while you are in China, you will always have that special souvenir.

There were a bunch of people stuck on top of a roller coaster in Baltimore, MD this evening. Trump signed some anti-abortion, anti-Planned Parenthood law privately yesterday. Took off for Mar-a-lago unannounced today. Has spent something like 28% of the presidency at or in transit to Mar-a-lago. Saturn might be able to support life. If you can see the NYT (I am betting now), the article is interesting. NT Times article on SaturnThere's noise about making young women register for the draft again. More United Airlines problems. A man was stung by a scorpion on a flight! Sad that I find a lot of my news on FB these days. |

Where are you in China?
DD spent part of 2015 and 2016 there for college. When she traveled, she found a number of cafes had VPNs that allowed her to access foreign news sources and Facebook. She also had a VPN for her dorm room, though the wi-if was so bad there it was constantly taking her VPN down.
Bring home spices. They have some there you'll never find here. DD brought home a lot as did I when I visited her. And tea, good teas and their common teas. DD really misses the particular grocery store teas she bought and drank while there.

Download a free vpn. Then open it before you access the Internet. I lived in Hong for two years. Facebook isn't blocked there but Netflix wouldn't let us watch from there so we used a vpn. When we went into China we were able to use it to check our email and Facebook.

How's the food situation going? We are on a cruise now and the food is western and I would give it a 9.5 out of 10 easily. I mean it's so good! I am finally full and didn't have to have French fries nor white rice to eat. I am sure it will get bad again when we disembark but I am loving it now. Everyone on the boat signed up for drink packages. That means beer or bottles of wine or scotch or what have you. I got a water package. It's hard to get enough good drinking water so I am good with it. Everyone else is all having a great time and I am drinking *water*. At least it's almost cold sometimes. We are very tired at the pace we have been keeping and are tired now. I am doing all the translating and it is getting hard to remember English or Mandarin. I am mixing the two of them. See the tired point. The Chinese people are wonderful and kind. They are so receptive if you just greet them in Chinese. It is so much fun. I honestly did not know I knew this much. (I have a degree that I admit fully I did not work very hard at) . I am ready to do some shopping now! |

Have fun! My daughter's best friend is a sophomore in college and spent last summer in China and Thailand. She stayed on a month longer than her college group and did some traveling on her own. She just got approved to spend the next year studying in China! You will have to share pictures!

Long message typed out and the iPad decided that I didn't like it so it writes for me but that's another joy of Apple products I am having a really good time the food is excellent there's no complaints I think we're going through a lock right now and the boat seems to be rising up against the wall as I'm facing the wall .
You might think it's weird that I am online typing on a cruise on vacation but it's only 7:01 AM breakfast is it served until say 730 for at least two hours and there's not a whole lot to do when you're up this early and nobody else on the boat is. We were somewhat worried about the air-quality as the cities are very smoky and with operating might be difficult but honestly as a severe asthmatic I have absolutely no problems with the air at all I mean the air is warm and sometimes a bit hot but there's no congestion or any breathing difficulty I'm quite amazed . Before I left home I had a lot of sneezing and allergy problems so I brought lots of Clariton thinking that I was probably going to need it but honestly I haven't taken one since I've been here .
it's a lot of fun talking to the local people here that's kind of the highlight. People want to know where we're from and how old we are and do I have children and what do we do for a living and all kinds of things they're just different they're not of obnoxious like Japanese people are and they're not all yelling hallo hallo this is a pen my name is Yukiko or anything like that. The people are very polite very kind and very sweet .
