My niece is getting married in July and I get to get her wedding cake server. I am so happy, but overwhelmed. She's young (23) and I'm afraid my tastes won't be hers. I want one she can use for years to come. Many on etsy seem like they are built for one use. I've looked on etsy and these were my favorite two. I was hoping to keep it around $50, so the bottom one is a bit pricey for me, but I prefer it, because it looks like it will last. The top one is so pretty, but I can't help but think it must not be super comfortable to cut with! Anyone have any thoughts about something they like?

I would get whatever she registered for....although, I think both of the servers you posted above are nice - the flower one is very unique and beautiful and the other is a classic.

I like the second set but I would consider a more practical gift. Those are the kind of thing that gets thrown in a drawer and never used again. The same with fancy schmancy China and crystal.
Is that something that is a tradition in your family? If it is then I recant what I said.

I would look at her registry, if she has one, just to get an idea of her style. I like both the ones you chose. I would pick the set that went best with things in her registry.
By the way, 20 years later I still use my set from my wedding whenever we have cake; birthdays, holidays, sundays, any chance I get.

I bought the bottom one for my niece a few years ago and she LOVED it. My niece would have been about your nieces age at the time. I think it's just darling!

Of the two that are pictured, I like the second one the best. I can see using it again and again. It would be a fun tradition to use the fork for anniversaries.

I suggest buying the cake server piece from her registered flatware pattern; it'll be more likely to get future use. (Note mine has now been used to serve cookie cake to preschoolers & pizza to teens & every holiday, birthday, & celebration in between.)

Is she registered for silver or every day utensils? If so, I would probably try to go with her pattern.
I really love the flowers, but I think they would be difficult to store.

I don't know this was a thing! I would love to have a keepsake one from my wedding. We use a cake server often, not just for desserts. . I love the second one and would go with classic.
Would it look tacky to vamp the second one with some Flowers for the big day?- best of both worlds!

I'll agree with several previous posters to buy it in the pattern of her flatware.

My mom tied some tulle, ribbon concoction that matched our colors around the handle. It looked festive on the table with the cake.

Love the bottom one with the forks. I didn't want to spend a lot for my dd's wedding, so I went to Bed Bath & Beyond and found a really nice knife for under $10 and took it to the mall and had it engraved for another $12 (I believe). I got a longer knife that they could use daily if they wanted to, not necessary a "cake" knife. I just put their initials and the date. She really liked the simplicity of it and was happy it was something they could use daily.

I love the bottom traditional set.
When our DD and son-in-law got married they used our cake server from our wedding, 32 years prior. We decorated the handle with the same ribbons and crystals that were used in her wedding bouquet. She's keeping the cake server for her son.

I also prefer the 2nd set pictured.
DD is going to use the knife/server set my parents used (and my brother). I didn't use the set because we cut our wedding cake with DH's Marine Corps sword.

Thank you for all your thoughts. She does not have any flatware registered and she did not register for a cake server. It's not really a family tradition, but somebody did this for me and I loved it. I am really drawn to wrought iron, but something that will last because you toss it in a drawer, seems wiser.

I have one similar to the second set. Not sure how it ended up in my possession, I think maybe I picked it up when we were cleaning out my grandparents house. Mine is full on silver though, not engraved as a wedding memento. But boy do I use the hell out of that thing. Not just for cake, but for casseroles, lasagnas, brownies, etc. It lives with all my every day utensils I use it so much. I know people probably don't use their cake server for anything other than cake, but once I figured out that it worked for other stuff I never looked back. (yes, I am a dork. ) My vote (in case it isn't obvious at this point ) is the second one. Mostly because mine has become almost indispensable.

We never use ours because our family's tradition is to use the same one my parents used.
My parents, 3 aunts, one sibling and 6 cousins all used the same server and knife.
I would go with something classic

I really love the second one because it is both beautiful and practical.
The first one would be harder to store and it looks like the flowers would eventually break off.

I really love the second one because it is both beautiful and practical. The first one would be harder to store and it looks like the flowers would eventually break off. The problem I see with the first one is that it is stylish. What is stylish now to a 23 year old won't necessarily be her style in years to come. I know my style has changed considerably since marrying at 20. Once it is no longer her style, then it will be relegated to the back of cabinet and never used (or worse yet- donated). Go classic and it will stand the test of time.
