Sorry so big!
This is a corner of my craft room that I'm reorganizing. This is the last of the junk that is getting moved/sorted/trashed. My original plan was to put my cricket here like a desk but that never happened. It ended up being a storage space for our antiques we used to sell and some misc stuff I didn't know where to store. I spent a FORTUNE on that space (those damn brackets are expensive). Now I don't know what to put there at all.
I'm trying to avoid making it into some place where junk just sits, but I'd like to see it utilized in some way.... neatly. Open storage I think stresses me out and makes my head rattle. the only idea I have so far is a beautiful set of dishes that I have (antique stoneware like McCoy) that I'd like to display but like I said, I don't just want stuff to collect dust so I don't know.
Underneath right now is my frame storage for my artwork. I might be able to move that if I need to.
What would you do with a workspace like that? (keeping in mind I have an entire room and a 9' long work table)
And here is my photo storage. This is stuff mostly pre-digital. So mostly everything from the 80's to 2006-ish. That's about 2 feet high and 6 feet long. It's a jumbled up mess. How would you organize all those photos? I especially get frustrated at photos larger than 4x6 because it makes them hard to put into albums. How do you handle all those 8x10's of your kids from JCPenney back in the 90's? lol.
One thing I want to accomplish is to hang more artwork in my home. Making all my vertical storage go away makes me hyperventilate just a little bit though. LOL.

ETA: those yellow boxes and the boxes on the far right have organizers inside of them where photos are sorted. A lot of those pics are sorted but not all of them.

The 8x10 photos also were purchased with 5x7's. Instead of scrapping the 8x10's, I am working on the 5x7's. The 8x10 are now just put away.
Anything you would not use or get into often, should be placed on the high shelves.
I don't like stuff out in the open, so most stuff is in baskets.

I scrap all the kid's 8x10's in one 12x12 album. I picture, background, title/year, done. very simple yet easy for anyone to browse thru and see the growth of the child.
I think I would organize the picture mess by taking one box out at a time, putting it in chronological order, labeling it and then moving on with another box. I have boxes of before kids, pets, zoo's etc, and then after kids.

I should clarify, I really don't scrapbook anymore. I might do a little bit after I get rid of 90% of my crap, but for the most part I don't. I was putting pics in slip in albums but that takes up a ton of space too! Seriously who wants like 75 photos albums passed down to them? :/

My kids better! What about something like these boxes for storage on your shelves? They come in a variety of sizes, so you can store different things, you can label them and it will look uniform if you get all the same color. Decorative stuff (like the dishes) might be nice on the upper shelves where you don't need to access them. Of course, cleaning then becomes an issue . . . As far as the 8x10 portraits go, I feel your pain. A few years ago, some catalog company had a DVD storage cabinet that had slots on the doors that would hold that size photos. I thought it was a great idea to hold at least some of those 784 portraits I had. I couldn't afford it at the time and now, of course I can't find them. <sigh> Mine are stored in the envelopes I got them in, one for each kid in chrono order. They're in a chest of misc. stuff. Basically, I have no suggestion for ya on that one. I'd love to see what you decide to do - pics of that, please!

I personally, would start by going through everything, and discarding, donating, selling whatever you don't want to keep.
Next, I would get all the same color and type boxes and baskets(that's my personal preference...you have way too much of an unmatching assortment, for my liking LOL!) . I like the photo style boxes, the usually have a slot in the front for a label. I think matching containers,boxes, baskets , help make a space look more organized, streamline, and clean.
Photos, I would organize chronologically into photo boxes and place on the wall shelves, labeled and in order. Craft supplies, in the photo boxes, on the wall shelves, labeled. Same with miscellaneous small items.
The various assortment of bulkier items would go in baskets, on the closet shelves.
The canvases and large photo frames. I would get a large rolling cloth laundry style art or bin.
Magazines and/or books, put in magazine holders, or stack neatly on wall shelves. Fabric ,in a basket on closet shelves.
Gadgets, machines, and devices, a top your desk/workspace.
Use a hutch type cabinet to display dishes and knick-knack type decor.

ok, to clarify, what are you planning on using this space and storage for? an office? living space?
and secondly, are you planning on keeping the photos in the boxes? (you said you're not scrapping them.) if so, sort, label, and buy matching boxes. for the 5x7 and 8x10 if you don't want to scrap them, you can put them in page protectors and store them in a pizza box. or scan everything in and be done with it.
go through everything and pitch, donate, sell, keep.
you're clearly SOME kind of artist if it's not scrapping, so I envision a colorful display area. with art, supplies, and you can display your dishes too. and if you use those mats/frames underneath, then leave them there!
you can buy bigger, matching baskets to sit on the floor for extra storage.

What will you use the space for? Or is that part of the decision? I am unsure from your OP if THIS room is your workspace, or if you have another separate work space in addition to this one. I have open wall shelves in my scrapbooking area. I've combined storage pieces to create an eclectic look that is interesting, but keeps the actual items out of site. So I feel like overall the room looks cohesive and I'm not seeing 203 jars of buttons in every colour and every colour of ribbon, etc out. It's not quite done, but here it is in progress: scraproom with wall shelves

sbartist , that's awesome! Your before was good, your after is great. What did you put in those clear bins in the middle shelf now? I'd love to have something that looks more like that. Maybe I could move all my sb albums into that space. This is a corner of my former "scrapbook room" which is now more of a craft room. I paint (watercolors) mostly now. I sew once in a while and I like to crochet. Most of my supplies are going into a 6' closet. I guess I'm just hung up on that corner and what I should do with it since I spent so freaking much $$ on setting it up. The bottom is like a desk with storage above.

I did buy the cardboard boxes from Office Depot. BUT, roaches love to eat the glue holding the cardboard together and since I don't want an infestation (because I know they do come out at night), I went with the canvas bins.
I don't have art bins. I bought the 6 drawer plastic storage carts from Office Depot. (One of them is actually the top 3 drawers from an Iris cart - that I have had for eons, that you see in the very first photo.) When I took apart the Office Depot cart, one of them was broken in the middle. So my DH returned to OD to exchange it and they let us keep the broken cart and gave us another. (The broken one was going to be trashed.) So that gave me two tops for the carts. We have a huge issue here with VOG (volcanic ash) coming in our open windows (no AC, so yes, windows are almost always open), so I really try to keep the black dust out of stuff.
I was left with extra drawers and the black supports after taking the carts apart, so we went to Lowes and I had them cut two pieces of plywood down to 13x13 squares (not sure on the exact size), as many pieces that size they could cut out of a piece of plywood. I then hot glued them to create tops which would make a shelf (the row with the photo boxes). I did have to cut off the tabs sticking out of the supports in order to glue the plywood to it.
I store punches, Sizzilit alphabets, embellishments, refills, etc. in the drawers.

You said you were scraping 5x7's.......I have stored 8x10's behind layouts with the 5x7 in an album. My children have ocasionally wanted some of their 8x10's.

I organize my photos from my film days into boxes from a company called Exposures. You can find them here http://www.exposuresonline.com. I use the shoeboxes for the 4x6 photos and their small art files which match the shoe boxes and are 145/8 x 27/8 x 11 3/4 for the larger photos and memorabilia. You can get the Signature Shoe box for 4x6 photos (it holds 1000 photos I think and comes with archival envelopes) for $22.99. No, I know it's not $5.00 like the one's at Michael's but these are worlds apart. These come in 8 colors. They have other styles too, although they used to have a lot more.
I've been using them for over 20 years. You could buy a couple at a time and build up a collection. Just an idea.
The company has been around for a long time and they are very much into "archival survival" as they call it. They do have sales here and there and I'm sure once you signed up with your email you'd get sent a sale coupon.
