First of all, I would hate to be. Cashier....standing all dAy long..... And not having much of a chance to chat with friends, only strangers.... Some of whom can be pretty rude. I have no problem chatting with the cashiers and I am amazed that so many have commented negatively. Is everyone so busy thAt they can't share a few simple words? They prefer machines to humanity? Maybe you were wearing jewelry that reminded her of the party? Who knows, you could actually get to know some of the people who help you day in and day out

Gotta love Walmart. I was buying a case of water one day. I took it out of the cart and put it in the belt, and the cashier said, "Wow! I bet someone thin couldn't even lift that!" Another time I was picking up a prescription and the clerk said, "It says here I'm supposed to ask if you're pregnant. Haha, I bet nobody has asked you that in a LONG time haha!" Thanks bitches! If I heard either of those comments I would have been pretty upset even if they weren't directed at me. Did you comment on their rudeness? In both instances it wasn't until I'd walked away that I realized I'd just been insulted. Apparently I'm slow in addition to being fat and old lol. It didn't really upset me because it was clueless rude rather than mean rude KWIM?

Please everyone don't get put out by someone doing their job. Just try to be nice and polite. We all have a job we have to do and certain things we have to do or will get fired. Is it really hard to have a quick conversation?

I wish cashiers were told NOT to do the whole small talk thing with customers.
Want to ask me if I found everything I needed? Great.
Please don't start telling me your life story, or asking about mine.

I notice if I get a smile and eye contact. I appreciate a 'did you find everything' query, as well. I haven't had a clerk slow down the check out process due to conversation, or make rude comments about my purchase, so all is good.

I don't mind, I'd rather chat than just stand there. I just find it funny that it never fails. Even my DH has been with me when it happened, after we've walked away he asks how I know her and he can't believe we've never met. But I also get random shoppers approaching me. A while back i was in the grocery store, and I kept finding myself near the same woman in the fresh produce area. At one point I joked that I wasn't stalking her. That turned into a 30 minute conversation, she was a sweet woman. Or another time I stopped at Walmart to grab something, I walked through the men's clothing department and an older gentlemen asked me if I thought these swim shorts would fit him. So I ended up helping him for a bit. And wouldn't you know it, a few minutes later he sees me and asks me what I think of these pyjamas for his wife. I didn't get any pervert vibe from him, he was just a clueless senior that doesn't shop very much, lol. I think it just proves I'm a yapper. I get along better with complete strangers than I do with people I know.

It has never bothered me to be chatted with by cashiers. I figure their job would probably be pretty boring if they didn't have some kind of conversation with customers.

Is it really hard to have a quick conversation? Oh I'm not put out, I just find it interesting that I must send out a therapist vibe. Even when I used to sell for a MLM company, my customers would stop by and pick up their order and one by one they would chat for at least 15 minutes just venting about whatever was bothering them. It doesn't bother me, I've had people tell me that I'm easy to talk to so I'm sure that's why it happens.

I chat with cashiers if they wish to do so. My Walmart cashiers are the ones who chat the most often. It's always brief, we don't hold up a line talking. I enjoy when one comments on something I'm buying and asks what it's like. Or saying they don't know what a particular fruit is. We have so much imported fruit now that it's not unusual to not know what something is. I've seen Asian things I have no clue about.
When asked if I want a store's credit card I decline but thank them for asking. They have to do it so I try to be polite with my response.

I don't mind chatting, but I really hate FORCED small talk--like if you can tell that they're made to talk and really can't think of anything to say. I'm not great on small talk to begin with, so if we're both just going through the motions, it makes it awkward. I was in Target last week and I really just felt like the cashier was pushing herself to speak to me and it was all just mindless "nothing" talk. Actually TALK and I'm just fine with it.

I don't mind if they chat with me, what I do mind is when they are chatting with the cashier 2 aisles over about their boyfriends, how drunk they were last weekend, how they hate where they work, etc... I always want to say "excuse me, can you please just finish ringing me up and chat later!"

Ooooh, maybe *I* drive cashiers crazy! I'm always the one to initiate conversation, I ask them how their day is going, when they say they're tired I ask how much longer until they get to go home and relax, etc. I don't ask personal questions, but I'd rather talk while I'm waiting then to just stand there while we both ignore each other. Me too! I really like people and I guess I just tend to take an interest in what they have to say. I like hearing other people's stories.

I can't tell you how many times I've stood there waiting for them while they chat or goof off, it's especially annoying if I only have one or two items on the belt. Then I'm definitely sending out a different vibe...

When I bought the "Napolean Dynamite" DVD at Target the cashier said, "This is a great movie to watch when you're stoned."
