I'm at a loss. And I'm feeling totally violated.
We must be doing something wrong to have now had 2 credit cards compromised/stolen. The first was beginning of July, my credit card, when we were on vacation.
Now, my DH's credit card (different cc company than mine was), and we were alerted this morning.
Seriously?
Is it happening from online? Is it because people are scanning the numbers? Both credit cards were in our possession, so not physically stolen.
Damn, this sucks and is a pain in the ass.

Welcome to my world. I have had the same account hacked twice within one month! The last time was last Sunday when we had just started our vacation. There isn't anything you can do differently because I take all the precautions mentioned and it still keeps happening. I only use Paypal, reputable sites etc. This last one was charged to a Russian mobile site. The new card number was only on Amazon and Amazon was one of the sites breached in that massive Russian data breach.
It is a pita. We have a separate card for recurrent charges that does not get used for anything other than the recurrent charges to cut down the the irritation factor of having the keep contacting companies.

You are not doing anything wrong. The hackers are just that good. Last year I was hacked 3 times and 2 of those were with the same card (Citi). It completely sucks, but the cc companies I've had, have been very good at getting the situation fixed quickly. I just wish there were a way to crack down harder on the perpetrators.

We only have one company we use auto-pay with. I didn't even remember my card was used to set it up with and that bill didn't get paid when it should have been. Yeah, this sucks. DH's credit card is the one we use 99% of the time for all of our monthly expenses and that was the card we were alerted to this morning. Interestingly, there was a story a few days ago about a major grocery store chain having information compromised, and that's where I shop. I can't remember the details to the story, but I'm now wondering if there's the connection.

There was a site I used to buy cricut carts from and every single time I bought from there my card would get compromised. It took a few purchases from there to figure it out cause I was also using the card in other places. But luckily I used my Amex and they would catch it, let me know, and send me a new card.
But it is a real pain when you have things that automatically bill to your card and you have to get a new one. I feel for you!!!

This just happened to me - my debit card number was used to purchase several hundred dollars' worth of items at a Home Depot in another state last week. I only have one card and it's always in my possession. Luckily my credit union caught it right away and shut the account down. I've had to have cards replaced before due to security breaches (Target, Michaels, etc.) but this is the first time that I've ever had fraudulent activity on an account.
ETA: My credit union is pretty sure that the fraudulent activity on my account is due to a security breach at Jimmy John's.

I was just alerted on Tuesday to charges made on a credit card that I never even activated and has been locked in our fireproof box. $500 to Bucket Feet. I first received a text message from Master Card and assumed it was a phishing thing because I didn't think they sent texts. I did log onto my account and saw there were purchases. Then within minutes I also received a phone call from the fraud department. They were on it.

Happened twice to us in July, too. Same account, two different card numbers. Bank asked the second time if we were giving out our card number. We just moved here in July and it really makes me wonder if it is a place we're going regularly that has a security problem. I've switched to using our only credit card for all purchases and then coming home and paying it off.

I had it happen to me once about 18 months ago.....what a PITA. It seems to be happening so much more these days to the point that it's almost worth going back to the days of cash and writing checks. The damn theives are getting so sophisticated...if only they put that much effort and intelligience to do good in the world.

I am sorry. Criminals suck. I don't think that there is any place 100% safe from being hacked anymore.

My card was comprised as well in the middle of the night, there were 4 charges that came through. I used my card online at a Scrapbook daily site, but other than that nothing out of the ordinary. I was signed up for 3 monitoring services at one company and another charge for a 3-d model place. It is frustrating to say the least.

It is probably local places where you were shopping who are having their merchant data compromised. I had probably 5 of them in a 2 year period. The bank won't tell you who it is, and it's rare that the store/restaurant announces they were compromised. I used to eat lunch out daily, places like Skyline, Penn Station, Jimmy Johns. I went on a diet 2 years ago and hardly ever eat out and it hasn't happened once since then.
People steal your numbers and don't use them right away, so you can't really tell by the timing where it happened, unless you use your card very infrequently.

I'm seriously starting to think about going back to writing checks at local stores. I'll admit to getting annoyed at those that still wrote checks, since they slowed the lines down. But I'll bet they don't have these hassles.

I eat out for lunch daily (lots of salad bars), but I only use cash. I've had less fraud since I've started doing this. I do think not using your cards as much is key, but a majority of people have these habits ingrained.

We just received a call from our bank this morning regarding 'unusual activity' on our debit card. DH is looking into it as I type. Ugh. Stupid hackers. L

You don't even need to use the card anywhere for it to be hacked. They have programs that just run a loop of card numbers until they get a hit. It isn't anything you are doing.

I just had my debit card compromised, but I didn't see any false charges on it. They just cancelled it and sent me a new one. I know my local grocery store was one of the ones compromised so I am pretty much waiting for a call from my credit card.

I think their systems are more sensitive. I think every card we have (3) and our debit cards have been re-issued at least once so far this year. One was re-issued twice.
Our Canadian CC had a Canadian cable provider charge on it for like $60. So they couriered us a new card. I don't think it's our abuse or misuse that causes it anymore.

That's a Bummer. After the Target debacle I stopped using my debit card and only use my credit card or cash. I also have an alert on my account that I get notified of any transaction over $25 when my card is presented and all transactions when my card isn't. So meaning all Internet purchases. And the email comes through almost immediately. It's not going to stop fraud but I can contact my bank immediately to hold my account.
Thieves suck!

We have a debit card (2 cards) and a credit card (1 card) for overdraft protection with USAA and American Express (2 cards) that were all compromised in a 3 week period last summer. We had just returned from a trip to Colonial Williamsburg. We think we must have come in contact with someone who has one of those scanner things. I carry the OD credit card and he doesn't, so they got every card we had with us on the trip.

This problem is rampant. We've experienced the same thing. Both times it's been at restaurants where the waitress takes your card away from your table. Within an hour, the scam begins. Mine happened at a Ruby Tuesdays and DH at a mountain lodge...but both places had college students working there from the nearby university. When mine happened, I was playing cards a few days later with three ladies...all three had been hit within the month. One was at a Vietnamese nail salon, another at a restaurant in Scottsdale. The police actually interviewed the nail salon case and said what happens is you simply put your cell phone over the card, take a photo and it gets sent out to a network of scammers worldwide. I now seldom use a card in a restaurant as they are some of the only businesses where the card goes out of your site. In Europe they come to your table and process the transaction in front of you.

My credit card was compromised a few weeks ago. Watch out for "Natasha Jewelry" in Orlando FL! They charged over $100 three times on it. The bank caught it and let me know and issued a new card.
ALso, as an FYI where I work we have a lot of people who travel and have company credit cards. They get compromised all.the.time. Hotels are notorious for it.

I got the call from the bank yesterday that a card I have not used since June now was being used fraudulently. Since the user had an actual physical card, the bank person says thus would not have been a database theft. More likely the card was swiped by a card reader when i was using it in previous months. Perhaps the thief only recently sold it which is. why it was used now. I carry all my cards in RFID safe envelopes, so I know the theft is not from someone walking by me with a scanner Very frustrating. But kudos to the fraud departments for picking these things up so quickly!

They did that when we were in Canada in June. We thought that was really neat. I don't understand why the US is so behind the times. I got some info about CC because I use them for my business which said that the US accounts for about half of all fraud charges in the world! 2015 is when the new chip cards become mandatory but it will take some time to roll them out.
When they do, merchants will have to have the new scanners or else we are held responsible for fraudulent charges if you swipe a card with a chip on a machine that isn't one of the new ones. Right now the CC companies cover the charge but not in the future.

Ok not sure if I am using the quote feature correctly. But the above suggestion is brilliant and i am going to consider doing that. I do have a card with a very low limit that I only use for on line purchases. So far, that one has never been compromised but if it is , I will know it was done by an online merchant.

I had the same thing happen twice early last winter when all the hacking was going on. I hadn't shopped at the affected stores. Chase Bank was a dream to work with thankfully, but it was still an inconvenience hope your stuff is straightened out relatively easily!

We're regulars too. We just figure on getting a new card number a couple times a year anymore. That's about how often it happens. And I follow all of the precautions.
