You don't even need to use the card anywhere for it to be hacked. They have programs that just run a loop of card numbers until they get a hit. It isn't anything you are doing. That. You likely did nothing wrong and there's no way to prevent criminals with dumb luck. Don't beat yourself up. Just makes you normal.

this happened to my debit card recently. I had a wally online order & when I picked it up I bought something else at the same register. My bank guy could tell us which & who it was. he could tell it was the person one & not the online one even though it was the same person that I picked the order up with. He could tell which day it was too & which transaction & where it was.

My debit card got cloned at a local petrol station a few years back and I had about £300 withdrawn from an ATM in Bangkok (have never been to Bangkok and now don't intend to!) Luckily the bank were pretty good and my money was reimbursed quite quickly as the petrol station concerned hd been closed down and staff arrested etc...
The bugbear was having to get a new bank account and debit card and transfer all my direct debits etc over, which the bank did for me. nd I was SO careful not to use my debit card anywhere dubious for a few weeks. Until the evening I dialed out for pizza and gave them my card number over the phone (like I'd been doing for years...!) and just 24 hours later £500 of online gambling withdrawals were made via my debit card number (as well as a top-up for the mobile phone they were using to play the online gambling sites...) and yes it was the pizza delivery guy - who I'd argued with because not only was he late with my pizza, it was the wrong one...
He was arrested and charged, I got my money back and went to court to watch him get sentanced... what a farce that was... magistrate gave him a "slapped hand" and told him not to do it again... turns out he was working in the UK and saving his money to send back home so his wife and children could join him... I lost the non-refundable £100 deposit for a holiday I'd booked that I couldn't pay the balance for in time all due to that little scrote, never got any compensation from him.

Welcome to today's world.
With the recent hacks into so many major stores' systems, especially via brick and mortar stores, very few people are safe. Fortunately, the credit card companies are better than ever at catching this. We get calls with unusual charges. We now always call when we are going out of town so that the card doesn't get shut down while we are away (it's happened).
In the past, we've had a few issues close together and then go more than a year without a new card. There are times recently we've gotten a new card just because of the possibility (such as with the Target and Michaels breach).
What's interesting is we frequently check our charges on line. We used to be the ones to detect fraudulent charges. Now, the credit card company alerts us before it ever hits the account.

It happened to us too. Two different accounts compromised over the course of 6 months. The cards were in our possession, not stolen. It was a PITA to fix it. I worry about identity theft now.
ETA: We also had a fraudulent charge on our debit card recently. We live in crazy times for sure. :-(

Good to know I am not the only one, but for me it was the same card in just 30 days..WTH? I didn't even use the second one but maybe 3 times..and I haunt the same places online so I don't get it. The first time I went to a new site and immediately thereafter they tried so I knew where the cc got lifted but the second time has me stumped and what a bunch of losers..they tried twice to charge over $11k in one shot..like that would go unnoticed.
