Do any of you have a favorite cashier? My mother did her grocery shopping at the same place and time every week, and looked for one particular cashier when she was ready to check out. She said it was because this person handled her groceries carefully, and she appreciated it. When I would visit and we did the shopping, she always made a point to tell her the week before that she would be having family visit in the coming week. As time went on, this became more than a business relationship - to my mother, she was a friend.
When my mother passed away suddenly, we went to that grocery store specifically to tell my mom's friend that she had passed away, and when we told her, she said she knew - she had seen the obituary in the newspaper and recognized her. She was truly sad for us, and was grateful that we thought to tell her in person.
I will always be grateful to that cashier, for befriending my mother, a 78 YO widow who lived on her own. I visited once a month (I lived 4 hours away), and I know Mom could get lonely, so it was a comfort to me knowing she had something to "look forward to", even something like grocery shopping.
Does anyone else have stories like this?

Yes I do. At the grocery store I frequent the most, there is a cashier I prefer because
a) She is fast b) She packs properly (frozen stuff together, refrigerated stuff together, boxes together, can's together (double bagged), etc) c) She is friendly/nice
That is a sweet story about your mom.

I don't have one particular favorite but I do have people I avoid and people I tend to get in their line.
I don't want to chat beyond how are you, have a good day etc. I'm not one who likes small talk. However IF someone is a really good cashier and good at small talke, I will get in their line.
That's ONE reason I avoid Walmart these days. Sometime in the last year or two they must have told the cashiers to be friendly and chat. But many of them, mostly the younger ones are so BAD at small talk that it's very uncomfortable. Between that and my other issues with Walmart, I gave up on them for groceries and only go there for other items very rarely.
ETA-there is one cashier at my Target that is also bad at small talk. But she's the only one there that usually tries to chat beyond the normal. I avoid her line if possible.

I used to have a favorite cashier at one of the grocery stores I go to but she left for a different store that I rarely go in. What was funny was that she worked at a grocery store where I shopped frequently. There was a new store that opened that was about the same distance from me and I liked it much more. There she was! She had also left the original grocery store. Then, another few years go by and a Whole Foods opened up close by. I went to check it out and there she was. LOL So, I seemed to follow her around. But, I don't shop at Whole Foods. I don't like spending $100 to walk away with a tiny bag of groceries. LOL In this cashiers case, she was fine with small talk without being intrusive and she didn't go overboard. She also packed the food nicely and most important, she was gentle with fruit and other items that shouldn't be thrown to the end of packing or dropped into a bag when it should have been more carefully placed in a bag.

Definitely. At each store I regularly visit I have a few cashiers I look for at check-out time.

I had a favorite cashier In my King Kullen. We talked about everything from kids to weekend and holiday plans to fashion; everything. We both loved jewelry especially good clearance deals. I actually gave her a couple pairs of earrings I found on clearance. She made food shopping fun. SAD to report my King Kullen closed down last December and shopping has not been the same. Still bouncing around from store to store cause none make me happy.

Yes! I shop at a small store at the same time each week, so usually the same few cashiers are working. I have two that I love and will wait longer for them. There are two that I like less well, so I try to avoid their lines, but last week got stuck in one of them and it totally change my opinion of her, we had a very nice conversation.

I love self checkout. No awkward chatting, and you can bag your own groceries. The only downside of self checkout is waiting for the insanely slow people that have no clue how to use it. I get there's a learning curve, but it's not rocket science.

Yes! I have three favorites at my local Trader Joe's. Josh, Phil and Laura. All three are fast, pack everything perfectly and love talking about Trader Joe's products. Josh is FUNNY and always makes me laugh. Phil is quieter, but we have great conversations. Laura is sweet and sassy and gave me a bunch of flowers once when I was completely frazzled (I had lost a dear friend that week to cancer. She didn't know that, but those sunflowers meant SO much to me). I actually love all but one cashier there. I avoid this one guy who is ALWAYS talking to coworkers or friends, is super slow, and is a terrible packer. There is nothing friendly or customer-service oriented about him. He is unlike anyone else there...it's mystifying.

I have a couple I like, and then I have several I don't like . I will go in a longer lane just to avoid the ones I don't care for. I have had them try to re-direct me to another lane and I tell them "Thank you, I will just wait here". Once the customer service lady asked me why I didn't want to move to a smaller lane and I decided to be flat out honest with her and tell her "I don't like the way she packs my groceries", she left it at that.

flopsykitty, that's a sweet story about the cashier and your Mom.
I have a favorite cashiers and those that I avoid, for all the same reasons everyone else listed above. I was so fed up at one store that I wrote a complaint letter (they dropped my vegetables twice, didn't use my cooler bags for the cold items, overstuffed my shopping bags) and service improved temporarily after that.

Miss Bonnie at Publix. She's been there as long as this location has been open. If I'm alone she always asks about my boys. She knows I love ice cream. She's genuinely nice and she does a good job.
I Will stand in line even if there are other open lines just to go through hers.

There are a couple of older women that I will choose over any of the others and will wait in a longer line for them.
But, at one of those mom & pop type convenience stores there is an Indian lady who is very sweet, has a nice smile and always asks about my kids. My kids will go in there from time to time with friends for a snack or a Slush Puppie and she likes them because they are well behaved. I'm assuming that the man I see there occasionally is related to her. He is a sourpuss.

I always hope for a man because women are quick to card me when I buy wine at Trader Joe's. I never carry my ID on me but I've found that every male cashier I have uses common sense that I don't look like I'm under 21.

I'm not sure I have a favorite at the place I usually go, but there are 2 I avoid.
One is super super slow. The other will comment on quite a few items I am buying, "Oh, I haven't tasted this yet, is it good?" or "I tried this and it left my mouth with a bad aftertaste". No thanks, I'll find anyone else but these 2 - even if the line is super long.

My ID is at home and I can't buy the wine without an ID. The question Sharla is asking is why would you leave the house with ID? What if there's an accident or something? I'd at least carry it with me when I know I'm buying alcohol (although no one asks for mine. )

Ironically enough, my least favorite cashier is DH's favorite. Don't get me wrong, she's a very sweet lady, but she is a talker. And she and DH can talk up a storm. The problem is, she can't talk and scan at the same time. She always has to stop to talk. And then the whole line gets backed up. Dh thinks he's trying to be nice, but he's really holding up the works. haha.

As a former cashier i can tell you we had favorite customers too. OP, the story about your mom is sweet. I'm sure she really liked your mom and appreciated you making a point of letting her know. I've had several favorite customers pass away and it's felt a bit like a friend dying. When you see someone a few times a week and even when you don't chat too much you feel like you know them and miss them when they are gone.

I definitely have a favorite. She's nice, not overly chatty, packs my groceries well and is quick. There is another one that I avoid like the plague. I shop at Wegman's and the cashiers bag your groceries as they ring them. This lady doesn't, she just throws everything on the counter behind her. If I wanted to bag my own I'd go to ShopRite! She also acts like she is inconvenienced at ringing me up.

Then again so do homeless people, hospitals are required to give you life saving emergency services regardless if you can pay or not.

OP, I had to do the same thing when my mum died. I have only been back to that shopping centre a couple of times since she died (5 yrs ago) because it's still too painful for me.
Where I shop there are several cashiers that I will avoid, usually because they're really slow. I don't tolerate slow really well!

Any cashier has the right to card you no matter what she you look. Some places insist every person gets carded so there are no errors made.

I definitely have one that is NOT my favorite. I cringe when she is working the register. she is the most unfriendly cashier ever.
there is a particular cashier at the target I go to that is the nicest lady. she has a very thick New Jersey or New York accent and she is likes to slip in her religious references but overall she is super friendly and very positive. no matter how long the line is, I can wait for her because she's so pleasant.

Of course I do, my older brother!
And getting carded isn't about looking under 21, in a lot of states they card you if you appear to be under 35-40.

I like most of my Walmart cashiers, but there is one I avoid. Ursula THROWS my fruit into the bags. I recently had a cashier manager try to direct me into Ursula's line as it was the shortest and I told her I wouldn't do it and why. Seems like I haven't noticed Ursula around recently...........
