Lexica et al - thank you for not getting upset re: my post. In retrospect I thought maybe it was too harsh. I have an intense, irrational fear of mountain lions - aka as cougars here on Vancouver Island. I don't even like being in a regular open parking lot when it's dark, lest I run into one. And that's irrational - I'm talking about my own apartment complex. The chances of a cougar getting this far into civilization without being stopped are slim. I mean, we've had sightings here on school grounds, on a few railway track areas downtown, etc.... but those are more rural or forested parts of town. I'm in the centre of the city, surrounded by MANY houses & buildings & such. So a cougar would have to get through a lot of vehicle traffic on very busy streets to get to my home. I won't go anywhere alone on the paths of the university now though... too many wooded areas where one could pop out.

And especially since you say you have long had an extreme fear of these big cats. I have always been a person that followed my gut, and if your gut is warning you with such a high intensity to be wary of mountain lions, then staying away from anyplace that they could be found is the right thing to do. There must be a reason for you feeling so strongly about it. I think that reason is survival instincts. I've actually been out in the wilderness walking when I have gotten a strong feeling that I was being watched by something. I didn't see anything or hear anything, but the hair on my arms was standing up and I would still to this day say that I swear there was some animal watching us and if we had continued on that trail, something bad would have happened. I just couldn't shake it off, so we turned around and went back to the campground we were staying in. No sense in ignoring a gut feeling and then finding out that your gut was right. SaveSave
