Last week at a HS sporting event, I saw a woman who looked vaguely familiar. After 10 minutes, I was 90% sure it was the older sister of a guy I knew from from elementary/middle school. (He was the hottest guy!) I went up and said "are you X from X school?" Yup, it was her.
I looked her up on facebook afterwards, and it was like going down a rabbithole. Her friends and those friends of friends were people I had not thought of since 1983-1986 approx. And most looked familiar. But some were like...what?
Anyone else done that for fun??

I have the worst memory! Usually it's they look so familiar, wasn't she the sister of that guy who did this sport or was maybe in student council? I have to come up with a name to make the connection.

I'm a primary school teacher and occasionally a former student will try to friend me. I never accept but yes, I do look at their page (often they are very open) and once I start looking at their friends list..... easily an hour of my life goes by! It's nice to see how many of them have grown up and what they are doing. Some are sad - kids you always knew had to the potential for greatness or the wrong road. To see an incredibly smart, stunningly beautiful student asking for drugs ( while in police custody) and seeing that she no longer has custody of the 2 children she has, very sad. But there is lots more of the positive stories and because they physically change so much from 12 to their 20's, sometimes it is hard to recognise them. Often the "plainer" looking girls in primary school have grown into classic beautiful young women and some of the quieter students are now confident, happy doing well in life success stories. Yes Facebook has certainly brought out the potential to check out all those old friends from high school. For a long time I never put a photo of myself up - too vain as I certainly don't look the same and I was worried people would think "wow, look how she turned out!' But then I realised that everyone is 30 yrs older andI really didn't care what strangers thought of me so now my profile pic gets changed regularly. Corinne

I have, but I don't friend any of them. I've taught for 24 years so many of my first students are in their early 30s. It's interesting to see what their lives are like. They change so much from little 8 year olds. One of my favorite little students that I had 18 years ago taught my son how to fish last year at a party. He is still as kind and thoughtful as he was when I had him in class.

Corinne After kids have graduated from high school, I will friend many of them. I have many that have gone onto to be teachers, politicians (two served the Bush's) and one on Broadway. Love it.

Oh yes, it is very easy to go down a Facebook rabbit hole! Sometimes I see someone I think I know, so I open their page on a separate tab, then I see someone on their page so I open them on a separate tab.... and before I know it I have 10 profiles open! Nothing wrong with a bit of Facebook stalking! After kids have graduated from high school, I will friend many of them. I have many that have gone onto to be teachers, politicians (two served the Bush's) and one on Broadway. Love it. A few teachers from my high school (1980-1985) are on Facebook and joined our high school FB page, and have friended some of us. It's pretty cool (but a little bit weird) having an "adult" relationship with them after 30 years. DD is also FB friends with a couple of her favorite teachers from high school, but only after she graduated.
