The first full week in May, our city has clean up week, where you can put almost anything out on the boulevard, and the sanitation department will pick it up. It is also very well known to be treasure hunting week, where people drive around looking at what people have put out and take it. We have put out things before hoping that people will take them, as there's things that I don't want to deal with listing for sale, but I don't want them to go to the landfill either. For example, we had an old swing set in our yard that our kids were getting too big for. My husband is going to build a new bigger one, so we put the old one on the curb, and within 24 hours it was gone.
There are also some interesting things...for example this morning when I left my house, I saw someone digging through a pile at my neighbor's house. They took... Used toilet seats and covers!! Now why in the world would someone take used toilet seats???
Does your city have this? Have you seen people take odd things?

We call it "Big Trash Day" - I love driving by things to see if something catches my eye. Not that I need anything else but . . .

Our town sends out trucks about every two weeks. In fact, they just came by this morning and picked up some junk our neighbors had put out after a remodel.
We also have pickers who come by and haul off stuff, too. Couches, lamps, tables, you name it. If you get it before the trash trucks do, it's yours!

we have to call up to twice a year, list exactly what we are putting out..up to 10 items. so it is a pain but will happen.

I remember this when I was a pre-teen/teen back in RI - we would all pile into mum's station wagon and cruise around the city looking for treasures I don't think we have something like this here BUT anytime I put anything big down by the kerb the night before trash pickup - it's gone before the trash trucks come by in the morning....saves me hauling it to the dump and paying a disposal fee (and yes - if it wasn't taken, we would bring it to the dump and dispose of it properly)

Okay so used porcelin toilet tank covers - here's my story on that. Our old contractor didn't install a bathroom cabinet correctly and it fell off the wall and cracked the cover to the toilet tank. I figured it was something easy to replace...nope! I ended up patching it and covering it but I said if there was a lucrative business to go into it would be selling replacement toilet tank covers for older model toilets. lol.
I saw a lot of my neighbors did clean outs too. Most of the stuff I was able to donate to goodwill (toys, books, games, outgrown kids clothes)

I immediately stopped in the street (no traffic) and grabbed it. I figured it was the same builders grade toilet and I was right, perfect fit! I did a happy dance for my discovery!

We don't have it where you put it on the curb, but one day a year you can take a truckload of crap to the dump for free with your water bill. Our town garage sale is the week before and then clean up day is the next weekend.
