My DH turns 52 next week and I'm having a hard time deciding on a gift. He's pretty hard to buy for because if he wants something he goes and buys it but I've come up with a couple of ideas. All are about the same price...
1. Tickets to Book of Mormon in Toronto. We live about 3 hours from Toronto but we could go for the w/e and stay with really good friends which would be nice. I doubt they would want to accompany us. B of M seems like the kind of thing that my DH would love...me not so much but I'd go for him. But, he is incredibly busy this fall and finding a w/e that works might be tricky especially if I did it as a surprise.
2. For about the same price as B of M tickets, I could get season tickets to our local community theatre (8 plays from September to June). We used to have season tickets and usually enjoyed it, although there's always a chance there's one that isn't our taste. We let our season tickets lapse just because we were busy with kids. Now we only have 1 at home and it's easier to get out alone but I find we don't always make the time to go out regularly on our own.
3. Option 3 is the Simpson's Lego house. I think it's kind of silly for a 52 year old man but I know he'd like it a lot. We have ridiculous amounts of lego and our youngest hasn't played with Lego in a couple of years. When he turned 45 the kids and I got him the Lego Yoda and he loved it and it still sits in his office.
Which would you pick and why? Or, do you have better ideas for a nerdy 52 year old runner?

I LOVED the BOM, but it's crass, crude, and not for everyone.
But we also have an amazing community theater. I just saw Les Mis and it was better than some broadway touring productions I've seen.
Clearly, I have no advice, lol

I loved Book of Mormon but Dani is right!!
I would splurge give him the choice of a few weekends for a Birthday surprise... you don't have to say what for!!

We LOVED Book of Mormon, I'd say go for it! Make a day out of it and go to a nice dinner. But yes, it it really crass and crude! My dd goes to a performing arts school and is a drama student so I took he for her 15th birthday. We went to a matinee and there was much pearl clutching going on, I don't think the older theater goers knew what they were getting into. The Lego thing is funny. That's what DH got for Christmas last year. He got the Imperial Star Destroyer and now he wants more than anything the Death Star. Boys will always be boys!

Oh I really want to see BOM! But the community theatre subscription sounds good too, kinda getting more bang for your buck! And you will have a number of dates to look forward to. Wish my dh liked theater, but no way.... Yeah I'm no help, but any of your possibilities sound good.

I personally would pick season tickets over the other options, because the gift lasts longer, but I am very practical that way. It sounds like a better deal to me.

Oh, I loved Book of Mormon. The picture posted above is the cast that I saw here in Texas. Was so so good. Horrible but good. I'd go with Legos, but that's just me. My family loves Lego--my mom got the VW Van a few years ago, she has the whole Harry Potter village. I get my brother legos most Christmases. Mom will be 69 next year, bro is in his late 30s.

That's a hard one! I just bought tickets for BOM when it comes here in January, but I also had a gift card that I won from work that paid for one of the tickets. DH keeps going "huh, I don't get it" and then I said "It's the South Park guys" and got "Oh, so it's supposed to be funny!" "Yes, honey!"
Legos sound like fun, too! I know I would enjoy it. But I also love the theatre, and you would be giving back to the local community. Decisions, decisions.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt, as I seem to be the lone dissenter on the Book of Mormon. While I found the vast majority of the show funny and entertaining, I felt some of it was too crass for me and crossed a line that made me uncomfortable.
I can tend toward pearl clutching ways, so again take that into consideration. I would choose either of the other 2 options over the Book of Mormon.

Main star will take over for NPH in hedwig and the angry inch. We saw BOM IN CHICAGO and got to see Ben Platt from Pitch Perfect.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'm going to go for the BOM. I suspect I will be the pearl clutcher in the crowd but absolutely no worries about offending my husband. He's has a PhD in religion so he'll probably call it a research trip. I'm conscious that birthday presents should be what the receiver would really love not what the giver would like. (I'd rather give him the community theatre tickets because I would like going there!)
I'm not normally a fan of matinees but I think I'll buy tickets for a Saturday afternoon and then we can go out for supper with our friends. Thanks again for the help.
