OMG I'm about to lose my shit. I work in a university library. They put in a new fire alarm/pa system this summer. They have been testing it the last few weeks. This week they have been testing it in our area. For much of every day the fire alarm goes off every few minutes. BEEP BEEP BEEP "a fire alarm has been activated.....". All accompanied by flashing lights.
Today they added the PA system and we've had armed intruder notification, lock down immediately, tornado warning, general emergency warning.... All accompanied by "this is only a test" periodically (there are signs up in the building warning of this testing).
It's LOUD, the flashing lights are headache inducing etc. Today has been the worse. It's been CONSTANT for about three hours now.

Was there no advance warning? I always let my tenants know when the horns and strobes will be going off so they can plan accordingly.

Oh wow- in a library too! I've been in a building doing this, gets old fast if you can't leave.
Does your job allow headphones? Music might help

Oh they warned us well in advance, but we have to work or use vacation time and who wants to do that for several days?
We do have headphones and it helps a tiny bit but not much (and not with the lights). I'd have to have the headphones up so loud that it would hurt my ears even more.
We do have earplugs but I can never wear them as I have tiny ears and they bother me terribly. I can't wear earbuds for the same reason.

ouch!! Our alarms are LOUD.. louder than loud. They are designed to be annoying and be heard over head phones etc so there is no way to block out the sound. I'd have to take a vacation! Our building gets that testing done before work hours start. There are warnings it will be going on if anyone has plans to come to work early they know it won't be productive.

They need to do that on the weekend. University libraries are typically open on the week end.. and late at night.

They need to do that on the weekend. Many alarm companies do not work weekends. It may be able to be scheduled that way, but there may be a huge afterhours rate hike!! I'm sure the powers that be scheduled it the best way they could to minimize impact. Unfortunately there is ALWAYS impact.

They are annoying and very loud. That being said, I would want them tested to be sure they work as expected in a real emergency. But it sure is annoying in the meantime. Hang in there! Hopefully they will be done soon!

It seems to have slowed down or maybe even stopped. Going to lunch soon and I hope that break will refresh me enough so I can concentrate and get some real work done.
