I feel your pain. On Monday my daughter set off on her own (boyfriend in tow) and drove four states away for college. She lived 2 hours away from us her freshman year so this isn't totally new but she is more like 24 hours away from us now. She stayed with her boyfriend's family until move-in day, which was today. She went to get her key to her apartment and got in fine, but the key wouldn't open her room. It was about 10 a.m. and she was told they would make her a new key and have it ready by 2. Now DD didn't have anywhere to go. By this time boyfriend is on a plane going back to his job. Her car is cram-packed with all of her stuff. She needs a shower and is exhausted. She goes to look around the mall. Met her roommates later on (loves them, thank goodness!) but 2:00 came and left and still no key. Still no key at 5:00 p.m. OK, she is getting a little frustrated now. I say it was VERY VERY HARD not to call the apartment manager myself and tell him to get a key made ASAP. I knew she would not want me to butt in so I didn't. As of tonight, the manager opened up her bedroom door, but no key until tomorrow morning around 11. Then my poor, poor (sarcasm intended) daughter had to lug all of her stuff up three flights of stairs by herself because neither her loser family nor her loser boyfriend (more sarcasm) was there to help her. Everyone else had family to help. It's kind of disappointing that nobody noticed that she needed help. But on the bright side, I am flying in next week for the long Labor Day weekend. I can't wait to see her, her apartment, her new surroundings. We are also going to take a quick trip (five hour drive) to see her grandma and grandpa who are very elderly and not doing well. It should be a fun, bonding trip for us.
